SPRUANCE74 -> Why are my points falling & Jap points increasing? (10/7/2011 7:33:47 AM)

I thought I was decisively winning the Guadalcanal Scenario. My points were 6642 on 8-28-42 to 624 for the Japs. I had sunk 25 Jap ships, 818 pts. vs. 11 Allied ships sunk, 166 pts. I'm holding Lunga & Tulagi.
On 9-3-42, I inflicted 1073 casualties with a Deliberate Attack at Port Moresby. I sunk 5 more Jap ships, 858 pts. vs. 172 pts for Japs. Yet my overall score has fallen to 5353 & Japs increased to 695. Plane losses are about even. What am I missing? Why are my points falling and the Japs increasing? I haven't looked at the other factors on the I screen - base points etc. They are not moving their ships. Are they building up their bases and accumulating points faster than I am? I thought I was building up my forces at Lunga & Port Moresby as fast as I can. What should I be doing?

The thing that comes to mind immediately is supply at bases you control. If you don't have sufficient supply, you don't get the points for that base.

Have you been taking significantly greater plane losses in air combat?

Have you been taking significantly greater troop loses in ground combat?

Have you had any ships sunk that were carrying large quantities of troops?

There are other sources of victory points besides control of bases.

You need to examine the big picture and take note of diffences from turn to turn.

Fog of war?

As I said, I'm going to look at those trends over time & try to correct any problems. My main focus has been to build up Lunga, Port Moresby, and also Milne Bay while watching supplies & fuel at Noumea, Sydney, Brisbane, Townsville,Luganville, etc. to be sure they don't get too low. Thanks for your comment.

Answers: No. No, & No. I need to look up those sources of Victory Points you mention. Thanks.

I turned off the "Fog of War" for this scenario because I wanted to see the Jap ships I sunk to monitor how my Strategy & Tactics were working. Thanks.

I reviewed the Base Points and the Allies fell from 5433 on 8-28 to 5233 on 9-1 and 4036 on 9-3 so this seems to be the problem. I will read up on what is causing this, but any suggestions would be appreciated as always. The Jap base points only went up from 207 to 210. Army points lost were in the Allies favor with Jap points lost increasing from 145 to 183 while Allies increased only from 7 to 12. Aircraft points lost were slightly in the Japs favor with Allies going from 244 to 301 while Japs increased from 246 to 276. So overall, I conclude that the main problem is with the decrease in my Base Points and I need to figure out the cause and correction for this. It is not clear to me based on the above #s why the Jap Scores increased from 624 on 8-28 to 684 on 9-1 to 695 on 9-3-42.

Check out page 264 of the manual. The base VP calculation is:

Basic VP# x [(current size of port) + (current size of airfield x 2)]

It is modified by the current supply situation. It the base has 100%+ of it's supply requirement, it gets the full number of VPs. If it is <100%, then it gets that %% of the VPs.

Another good point made here is that you can increase the base level value of your bases by building them up.

I try to max out every base I own.

Some may see this as cheezy way to accumulate victory points, but what else are all those SeaBees good for?

Yes. I think that is the problem. I have too many supplies at Lunga and not enough at some others. I'm going to have to distribute them more evenly. Also I don't know how to do all the things on p. 250 RE supplies. This is a great game, but complicated.

IIRC, This scenario is also one where you get points for ship damage. You may be seeing some decrease as IJN ships repair also

Thanks. This helps to explain it since I have quite a few damaged ships being repaired as do the Japs.

Your Perry quote gives me chuckle because it reminds me of one my favorite comics in my youth, Pogo, who said "We have met the enemy and they is us."

I am organizing and reoganizing my TFs to get supplies, fuel, & support to bases which show red or pink colors. Low fuel output at Noumea & Sydney is a problem.
