When the battle planning screen is on, how do you know if there is any air support? I see aircraft that have an S on their right side. Does this mean they will be in the battle?

With the "s" on the side, they are on a combat support mission.
If there is the golden arrow, they have been ordered to attack a specific hex

If you assign it, like the artillery to the planned attack, then - YES.

"S" Air units left unassigned could, theoretically, support every combat in range. But the practical reality is that they will get knocked into reorg or rest after one or two combats. So, whether they support a specific combat depends upon when that combat is executed in the combat round. Early ones tend to get a lot of support, while late ones tend to get little.

This is why I tend to prefer to actually assign them rather than leave them in "S" mode. That also lets you get them into the combats that they have better cooperation with. Artillery, however, is another matter.

Most of the time I cannot see the small arrow for assigning the attack on the current battle. It is very faint.

I'm guessing you have very high screen resolution. If so, you may find the Huge View useful. However, there is another option: See item 35 in section IX of the 3.4 part of the
"What's New" document. It will allow you to reduce the screen resolution during TOAW operation - restoring it upon exit.
