Sarissofoi -> Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/29/2011 9:10:35 PM)

Greetings
A lot time pass when I was here before.
Good to see that Distant World is doing ok.
So I come with a friendly warning.
There is Swords of the Stars II on sale.
Dont even try to buy it(unless you are masochist or want to wste money).
The game look and play like early alpha which mean it is no playble and full of bugs.
Comparing to this failgame Master of Orion 3 is the best realese ever.
Feel fry to try but then not cry.
Good luck

The same - just a review to be beta - is in the confession thread. Figure out, together with the other author, which one will be used or let them merge.

Sarissofoi -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/29/2011 9:19:55 PM)

My bad. I look for something with SotS in title.
Merge but under more informative title.

Webbco -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/29/2011 9:48:27 PM)

Balakirev -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 12:27:48 AM)

SotS2 is playable, and not prone to crashing.  That said, it's got a number of unfinished features, a really convoluted UI, a terrible manual, various bugs, and no tutorial.  In other words, in a better world, where games are released when they're finished, this one would be counted mid-beta.  It's evident based on comments by the developers that they lost  series of team members this year, fell behind schedule, and had to get the game out after several delays because of commitments.

The mechanics frankly sound great if you read about them, and I think the possibilities are there for an interesting title.  But it's going to be a couple of months at least before they turn around a lot of this.  Someone already asked for alternatives in the Paradox forums, and I mentioned by DW and the X3 series.  In fact, DW has been mentioned most of all, which says something (good).

YourConscience -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 10:18:13 AM)

Yeah, I bought Sots2 and all I've got to do now is hope that they'll fix it.

Anyway, Distant Worlds, in my opinion, is the sleeper hit currently. Almost no one knows about it, but with the last expansion and all the patches by now it is a serious candidate for a classic right next to Moo and the likes.

I think Matrix could do well by running a larger marketing campaign for a clean re-release with all inclusive.

It's still too early to say for certain whether DW is ready for a proper release through the main stream retail paths of high street stores and steam. Lets see how the user interface and empire management looks post Legends.

Is the tutorial ready for a wide scale release?

YourConscience -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 10:42:59 AM)

Uh, I wasn't talking about that kind of a huge release. I just meant putting a few ads on some better known places for a week or two after release, as opposed to the current no-ads whatsoever. (or none that I would have noticed)

sanderz -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 11:41:56 AM)

i also bought SOTS2 - its totally unfinished and i am trying to get a refund

the forums over at paradox have been VERY active with complaints - and the Kerberos forums were down for a day or more following release

Farrels -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 12:18:01 PM)

Distant Worlds is being banded about as a alternative to SOTS 2 on the Paradox forums, so maybe expect some extra traffic on here and for Distant Worlds to become more widely known

Bleek -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 12:43:25 PM)

Matrix need to get DW on Steam at least, they would definitely pick up sales and a following.

Data -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 2:17:56 PM)

I for one like it as it is and to get more publicity in other ways...no steam or impulse, thank you [:)]

WoodMan -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 2:19:49 PM)

I think we discussed the Steam issue sometime in the past.  The conclusions was that apparently it is more profitable to sell direct to a small audience than to a larger audience with a middle-man taking a cut.  Unless you are going to sell many, many copies, you know, like a Total War series kind of sales figures, Steam isn't the best option.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 4:55:48 PM)

Hi everyone,

I understand the concern over SOTS II, but please remember our forum rules. If you want to post constructive criticism about SOTS II, you are welcome to, though that's better posted directly to Kerberos or Paradox then here. If you want to issue a general "state of game" warning to other gamers, fine. However, please don't bash other developers or publishers here, keep it civil and constructive just as you would if they were other posters.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik Rutins -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 4:57:37 PM)

Also, you can be assured that we are doing everything possible to get DW as wide an audience as we can. We are not trying to keep this a secret at all. Any help you can provide spreading the word is always appreciated though. Mainstream channels are not always open to strategy games.

Regards,

- Erik

Data -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/30/2011 5:46:12 PM)

They will open to this one [:)]

Gelatinous Cube -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/31/2011 12:02:58 AM)

I've seen a lot of references to DW on the Paradox forums in the last couple days. I love the SotS franchise, but this whole fiasco is at least giving DW some exposure as people look for other games to spend some money on this weekend. [8D]

WoodMan -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/31/2011 12:27:22 AM)

never tried SotS myself, have heard nothing but good things about the first one.  I don't want any space strategy dev to struggle, so I hope they turn things around and get SotS II working well soon.

However, the extra attention to DW is of course really welcome, its a small but friendly community who are always willing to help new players.  Now is a great time to start playing DW too, because the 2nd add-on comes very soon, which will add a great deal to an already great game. [:)]

Hertston -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/31/2011 12:38:48 AM)

The reaction to SotS2 is something of an over-reaction, in that it isn't as dire as some claim and - if Kerberos/Paradox keep their promises to fix it - could end up rather special. Unlike Elemental, the potential is there. At the moment, though, I agree with the OP, I couldn't recommend the purchase now. Buy it in a few months once salvaged and no doubt at a heavily discounted price.

Just in case there are any SotS fans about to take the plunge anyway, they are now chucking in all the launch-time DLC 'immersion packs' for free. If you haven't played SotS, you can get that for free too via Kerberos.

Simulation01 -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/31/2011 12:48:08 AM)

I'm a fan of SOTS I and I want SOTS II.  I believe in supporting things that look like they have promise and I believe it does.  So, I'm not asking for my money back and I'm not going to berate them though I am disappointed.  They will fix it and make it right.  I don't consider my money wasted...for months I've been screaming for news and now I have it.  We now know exactly where they are with the game....and that is not an invitation for snide comments.

DasTactic -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/31/2011 2:04:38 AM)

I bought it to tide me over until DW:Legends is released. The game looks awesome and the game mechanics as designed will be great after patching. It boasts a dynamic government matrix that shifts based on the choices you make in the game; provinces with provincial capitals; different game-play styles; and so on.The launch was very very poor but unlike MOO3 the actual game mechanics will be very solid after patching. If they needed an injection of funds they should have launched it as a beta and then released the release version in a few months. As it is the fans are peeved becuase they launched it saying it was ready - which it clearly isn't. Will be a great game one day - just not right now.

I'm blaming Elliot and Eric for making me find distractions while waiting for Legends to be released. ;)

Malevolence -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/31/2011 4:13:31 AM)

Let's have positive thoughts and hopes for SOT II. Successful titles encourage investment $ and publishers to back 4X games. Flops have the opposite effect.

Hey now, it's not like we don't sell other games here too, if you were looking for a distraction. [8D]

I don't blame you for giving into temptation though. The original SOTS + Expansions is excellent.

Have you tried Armada 2526 + Supernova yet? Starships Unlimited also still has its charms, even though it looks quaint graphically and AI War will certainly keep you busy for a while.

Regards,

- Erik

Gelatinous Cube -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/31/2011 4:27:50 AM)

I also heartily recommend AI war. Not a 4x game per se.. but it's certainly as long as any. A medium-sized game will last you weeks, unless you play a LOT.

unclean -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/31/2011 5:20:06 AM)

Yeah, AI War is awesome. Not at all like DW though, it's some Tower Defense, Grand Strategy, RTS... thing. Starts out kind of slow but once you carve out a decent chunk of the galaxy it's really tense and fun.

A lot more complicated than DW though, which isn't really a good thing. I mean they must have at least 300 units, all with unique counters. It's a lot to take in.

I can enthusiastically second the recommendation for Armada 2526, especially in combination with the Supernova expansion. It's now tied with BOTF as my favorite 4x title of all time, surpassing even Distant Worlds (which is #3 on my personal "Top 5" list). [8D]

SpectralFremen -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/31/2011 12:05:20 PM)

Wow.
Game dev discussing other games (from OTHER companies in the same genre no less!) perks with his customer base? Eric you are one awesome guy.

I've always wondered why you guys don't get yourself put on gamersgate? The paradox strategy games are the only things I've really played that are comparable to DW's overall depth and awesomeness.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Swords of the Stars II - Friendly warning (10/31/2011 1:56:24 PM)

Hi SpectralFremen,

Oh, really?

Allow me to encourage you to try a few of our other games too. [:D]
