Nice AAR and finally someone who has morale as the soft factor too!
One devilish remark I can't resist though, YOU are doing HQ build-ups? [sm=00000622.gif]

Why wouldn't I? It's a useful tool, if you don't overuse it. I done very few in the game, thus far. I want to save my trucks.

Flaviusx -> RE: Katyusha and the Monkey: A Grinder's Tale (no Q-Ball) (1/26/2012 4:24:07 PM)

James uses buildups sparingly, not promiscuously. That's not the secret of his success. He is not a panzer pusher.

glvaca -> RE: Katyusha and the Monkey: A Grinder's Tale (no Q-Ball) (1/26/2012 4:57:36 PM)

Oh, as I said, just joking. And I have no problem using it, at all.
Just remembered a Pelton bashing post were you sort of, euh, made fun of Pelton using it. Together with Flaviusx off course who immediately comes to your defense [:'(]

You know, you say panzer pushing as if it is something bad, as if it is something gamey. IMO, it's and art and very difficult to do just right. But if you can, it will help you and could be decisive. And would I be saying something totally rediculous if I would say Guderian was the ultimate panzer pusher of all time?

Besides, is there something like WitE HQ buildup police? What's promiscously and what is accepted as "good play"?

I would hope that instead off the pro-axis versus pro-soviet gangbangs of late, perhaps we could all regain some objectivity?

I've made fun of Pelton on a lot of things - mostly when he goes overboard on a rant - but I don't recall ever making fun of him with respect to HQ Buildups. I think that he overuses them, to his long-term detriment, but that's just my opinion.

I'm getting the feeling that you may be confusing me with someone else. I've never said anything like that. Please correct me with a cited quotation, if I'm wrong.

Anything I do is "good play" and anything more is "promiscuous"...[;)]

I agree. I play both sides, with about a 70:30 split, Axis:Soviets. I'll be starting another AAR soon, for a Soviet game that I took over from Toidi at the beginning of "March Madness". Tune in there for a chance to see me tell how everyone else in the world, but me, is doing it wrong...[:D]

Flaviusx -> RE: Katyusha and the Monkey: A Grinder's Tale (no Q-Ball) (1/26/2012 6:20:58 PM)

Glavca, it's not about policing anything. I just have a much higher regard for the level of play that James possesses than mere panzer pushing. He does true combined arms operations. He understands, better than any Axis player I've yet met, how morale in this game really works and how to take advantage of it and the value of momentum. He also fully integrates infantry in his operations and pushes them aggressively -- and that's what distinguishes him from the more stereotypical panzer pusher, who just rushes those guys around and doesn't really understand at a gut level the interplay between them and the grunts. James is absolutely fanatical about knocking out forts and will always keep his infantry busy doing this, which is exactly right.

The incredibly forgiving HQ buildup in this game allows for this panzer abuse, but it's actually not the best or most dangerous way to play the Germans.

James' landsers are every bit as dangerous as his panzers.

DivePac88 -> RE: Katyusha and the Monkey: A Grinder's Tale (no Q-Ball) (1/26/2012 8:02:18 PM)

+1, agree there.[&o][&o][&o]

JAMiAM is probably the best all-arms exponent with an active AAR. You will notice how Q-ball, had very limited counter-attack opportunities in the opening turns. This is in my view, because JAMiAM didn't push his mobile units too far forward.

I think that some players go for depth in the first turns, at the cost of stability of position. Resulting in them spending time and fuel in turns 2 and 3, extracting trapped units. I think that JAMiAM understands that turn 1, is also about creating good jump-off positions for the next several turns.

Peltonx -> RE: Katyusha and the Monkey: A Grinder's Tale (no Q-Ball) (1/27/2012 3:02:04 PM)

Q-ball was doing ok until turn 8, which was a major disaster. I haven't had anyone hand me a hanging piece of friut like that in a long time.

I was really surpised also he did not do the normal with drawal in the south behind the rivers, which is what probaly lead to that T8 disaster.

Once you got that uber pocket, the writing was on the wall for the rest of the summer.

He can't recover from that brain fart vs a good German player.

Game set match from T8 until he resigns.

Good AAR, thanks for posting info.

Pelton

Flaviusx -> RE: Katyusha and the Monkey: A Grinder's Tale (no Q-Ball) (1/27/2012 3:13:30 PM)

I hardly think that Q-ball's position is so disastrous as that. He's probably going to lose Moscow. But James has real issues down south. Q-ball has shown how dangerous he can be in the blizzard if you leave him alone at or near the lower Dnepr.

Q-ball's real error, imo, was letting Leningrad go so easily. That's what's making Moscow doable. You have to keep PG4 busy up there as long as possible.

Yes Leningrad did fall quickly I was surpised. James tactics were different yet effective. I thk Q-ball had never seen it so did not react correctly.

The mistake in the center was huge, vs a good German player a mistake like that so early in the game + Leningrad falling before turn 12+ spelled distater for the rest of the summer.

Q-ball is one of the best at blizzard O, but hes going to have little left to recover from the massive losses he is suffering.

James is not done yet with 1941 also.

Pelton
