As BB said having the right national pt's in the pool at the right base matters....GP

Yaab -> RE: PT boat generation (6/25/2019 10:47:28 AM)

Thread resurrection.

Let me see if I get it right.

You have 10,000 supplies at a base or a ship loaded with supplies in CONUSA, docked at the same base. You have 20 PTs available in the pool. You want to create PT boats at the base. In this situation, no matter what you do, you will ALWAYS create a flotilla of 12 PT boats at base, even though 2,4 or 6 PT boats would be perfectly enough for the base. So now, if you want to have the surplus PTs in another base, you either have to move them in a TF (subpoptimal if the base is beyond PTs range) or move the ship with supplies to the other base and create eight PTs there, even though in the new locale four PTs would be enough, disband the surplus ones etc .

Basically, for all creatable small craft (PTs, barges etc) there is no way to tell the game HOW MANY small craft you want to create, and you always create a fixed number of a given craft type as per manual page 108, provided the craft are available in their respective pools?

The number created is standard up to a maximum, assuming the pool has that many PTs for that nationality. So no, you cannot specify how many you want, but can just return the extra PTs to the pools one at a time by putting them in the port using the button on the port screen. It will take a few days for the PTs to reappear in the pools.

RangerJoe -> RE: PT boat generation (6/25/2019 3:06:02 PM)

Look at the bright side. You don't have to build the PT boats in the USA and then load them onto tankers and ship them to where you want them. If I remember correctly, that is what actually happened.

Yaab -> RE: PT boat generation (6/25/2019 3:29:06 PM)

Thx. The High Command accepts the idiosyncracies of PT boat generation.

HansBolter -> RE: PT boat generation (6/25/2019 5:17:41 PM)

British and American PT boats draw from separate pools, but the intel screen shows what I believe to be the total of both pools.

The only way to find out what percentage of the pool total may be British MTBs is to create a British MTB PT TF and see how many you get.

The create PT Boats text will be grayed out in otherwise qualifying British ports if their pool is dry, even if the intel screen shows PT boats in the 'total' pool (meaning American PTs are available).

The Brits have way, way less PTs than the Americans.

Add the Dutch MTBs to this equation and it gets even more complicated as they also have their own limited pool that is not reported separately on the intel screen.

I believe, and have never been able to confirm, that the pool total on the intel screen is combined total of American, British and Dutch.

The way PT boat availability is tracked and reported to teh player leaves much to be desired.

The same can be said of the Landing Craft pool. There is no reporting of what types of craft are available, or when. There are plenty of different types. You never know what type you are going to get or when a given type will run out, or be replenished, or even IF it will be replenished.

Pools craft seems to have only been half heartedly implemented. Guess they were at the low end of the priority list when time started running out on the design effort.

No, I've read it. lots. Just can't find things again in it that I know are there. like the list of national capital bases or whatever they are called. I know there is a list of them in the manual. Yesterday tried and finally gave up trying to find them though ... but they are there ... somewhere...[&:]

I do not think they are in the manual

Yes, procreation is a strange and messy ritual ....

geofflambert -> RE: PT boat generation (6/25/2019 10:14:20 PM)

PT boats never did anything. Why build them? Sorry JFK, autographing coconuts doesn't count as "something".

geofflambert -> RE: PT boat generation (6/25/2019 10:15:34 PM)

But seriously, why would you want to build any in a US port? What are they supposed to do?

RangerJoe -> RE: PT boat generation (6/25/2019 10:18:29 PM)

Barge busting, rescuing downed pilots, dropping people off and picking them up behind the lines, . . .

geofflambert -> RE: PT boat generation (6/25/2019 10:24:10 PM)

I meant in game terms, though you can make a case for just doing it anyways.

RangerJoe -> RE: PT boat generation (6/25/2019 10:34:48 PM)

Just by defending a base will cause enemy TF to use ammo and OPs points. In my game as Allied, I like to send them from Manila to the west side of Luzon to play with the Japanese transport TFs. Some enemy ships have burned up just from .50 caliber hits. Others were struck by torpedoes, not to mention the Japanese playing bumper ships. Send them in nights with low moonlight and/or bad weather.

Also, if you were to put them in an enemy base, they might "rescue" pilots shot down instead of them being MIA although the game does not state this.

RangerJoe -> RE: PT boat generation (6/25/2019 10:36:22 PM)

3 Dutch PTs also have depth charges. Useful against minisubs as the PTs are hard to hit.

Greyjoy's PT torpedoed Yamato ... "MAGAZINE EXPLODES!". Is that a good enough reason?

In his game Yamato blew up in a US port?

RangerJoe -> RE: PT boat generation (6/26/2019 2:10:49 AM)

I had a PT boat put a torpedo into the Kaga once but nothing like that happened. The PT boat survived the encounter.

Are you sure it wasn't a coincidental internal explosion, like Mutsu? [:D]

HansBolter -> RE: PT boat generation (6/26/2019 11:23:23 AM)

In this game the Yamato was once sunk by a single fish delivered by a PT boat.

They can and do have a real impact if used aggressively in large numbers.

Part of the success in using them is giving them high aggression captains with good naval skill. Early on, there just aren't enough of those captains to go around.

RangerJoe -> RE: PT boat generation (6/27/2019 2:56:56 AM)

Give the PT TF a good commander.
