bugwar -> Overstocked Leaders? (11/16/2011 12:17:33 AM)

As near as I can tell, the rules say that the limit on the number of generals
at a given rank is a result of the following formula:

4 Stars = # Academies / 4, but at least 1
3 Stars = # Academies / 2, but at least 2
2 Stars = # Academies / 1, but at least 4

In the campaign (Southern Steel, Nov 62) playing as the South, I have three
academies in my nation. My military advisor says that the Confederacy has:

5 Star Generals: 0/0
4 Star Generals: 5/3
3 Star Generals: 4/4
2 Star Generals: 15/20
1 Star Generals: 3/1000

Shouldn’t my allowed values be a lot lower?

That is not how the game seems to work nowadays (might have been at release).

2 stars = ammount of Divisions
3 stars = ammount of Corps
4 stars = ammount of Armies
5 star = 6 (??) Academies

And then there is some mess due to the fact that the CSA starts with a few 3 and 4 stars generals more than they have corresponding containers (Unless my memory is off, Bragg starts as a 3 star with only a division to manage), and those excessive 3 and 4 star general positions do not "reset" when you demote those generals.
(hope you get my point as I am too tired to translate into a proper english atm).

Thanks for the thoughts.

Unfortunately, the game reports that for containers I have:
3 Armies
3 Corps
18 Divisions

While the Advisor says that my limits are:

5 Star Generals: 0/0
4 Star Generals: 5/3
3 Star Generals: 4/4
2 Star Generals: 15/20
1 Star Generals: 3/1000

Which does match your formula for the three and two star limits.

terje439 -> RE: Undocumented Formula? (11/17/2011 8:26:23 AM)

It also explains what I said about the CSA.

You start with 3 armies = 3x4star positions, however you have 5x4 star generals at the start (2xJohnston, Beauregard, Lee and Polk).
You also have 3 corps at the start = 3x3 star positions, while you have 4x3 star generals at the start (Jackson, Van Dorn, Holmes and Bragg).

Since you are reported at 4/4 3 star generals, did you build a new corps?
The 2 stars number might be hardcoded, as that makes no sense to me

Never really given this alot of thought so I might be missing something.

Uh, nope.

I haven't built a thing. As you could note from my earlier post, I have THREE Corps.

Bug, be sure you only have three. Remember the Valley district is a corp container. I think the two stars are hardcoded for under 20, and the rulebook is inaccurate. Terje is correct, they changed it in one of the patches. They also changed the rules on how camps work, as well as a few other important structures.

Thanks for the idea, but the computer and I agree that the Confederacy has three, not two, not four, but three Corps.

Gil R. -> RE: Double Checking (11/23/2011 6:25:43 AM)

I'm not sure I'm seeing the problem here. The game most likely does start with more 4-star and/or 3-star generals than there are containers, since we assigned historical ranks to the generals. What terje439 says about demoting generals not making a difference surprises me, but at some point by losing generals and/or making new containers I'd think there would be no problem. And it looks like in bugwar's game there is no shortage of generals to command the containers. So what am I missing?

Perhaps nothing.

I am trying to find out what the formula is for determining the limits on the number of generals by rank.

As near as I can tell, the formula in the manual is not correct.
