mogami -> Scen 19 Mogami USN vrs AI-IJN (11/1/2002 11:40:09 PM)

Greetings, to fill the time when Dan is at school (and do my testing) I have began a scenario 19 as the allies. 200 percent ship commitment for Japan 100 percent Allied. Historical sub doctrine and DC. FOW on. Up dates will be on the 15th and 30th of each month.

Of course it is well known the Allies ar outnumbered on May 1 1942 and that condition will reamain for quite a long time. I plan on doing what I can for Port Moresby and NG without risking material. This means basicly air supply and fighter groups when possible but getting reinforcments there is not going to be likely.
(since they can not be supplied there is no reason to use the airtransports to move them) 7th Aus Div will try send a Bde but it will likely simply move to Townsville. (Cooktown and Cairns are not auto victory cites and will not be reinforced. After these bases are built up the engineers will move south for use else where.

The main effort in the beginning will be to make Noumea/Efate/L'ville secure and operational.

Train the aux ships to get exp up (MSW/DMS/SC/PG) To this end they will all base out of Noumea and sail back and forth between there and L'ville (It takes a few weeks for any IJN sub to reach this area.

The subs that begin the game at sea will homeport out of PM. Those at Brisbane will move to Noumea, load mines and move to deploy them. They will homeport out of L'ville after laying the mines. (in slot east of Shortland)

The surface ships in Brisbane will receive very limited reinforcments (2-3 CA 4-6 DD) This will provide for a TF of around 12 ships. It's primary mission will be to run fast transport supply to Port Moresby and hopefully at some point intercept a Japanese surface TF. I will position bombers at Cooktown/Cairns/Townsville to hopefully strike any such TF that as a result remains in range during daylight.

The B-17E's will be withheld from combat, as well as the Wirraways.

Fighter groups will spend short periods in Port Moresby (when they are full size and rested and PM's airfield is open. No more then 3 groups will be stationed at PM at any one time. No bomber groups are to station there (they eat too much supply) The airfield and port will not be expanded. (If PM is retained it can be expanded once it is totaly secure. I'm not going to build abase for the enemy.

PM 4.9k supply. So far I have ran one Fast transport TF up and back. It requires 5 days up and back and delievers 2k supply

Lexington and Yorktown under Spruance have refueled at L'ville and are back at sea, I plan to move them up near Santa Cruz where they can run over Lunga/Tulagi if any more Japanese TF show up there. My lone oiler (Neosho) is loaded and following the carriers north. (If I do not move too much I can refuel a couple of times and remain on station for a few weeks)

mogami -> 3rd report (11/2/2002 11:29:20 PM)

Greetings, things are getting a little warm. I have not been very successful at anything I've attempted so far. The airfield on Moresby has been closed for several weeks. I have 2 fighter groups stranded there. Every transport TF has to abort due to enemy carriers and the last couple of fast transport missions have ran into Battleship bombardment TF's. Lucky for me I have received 2 more carriers with another still enroute. I think the next report will contain at least one carrier versus carrier battle.

This is where the setting of Naval Attack/Airfield really comes in handy.
The groups will wait to see if search finds a target and if not will attack the secondary. (This is also how you want to set the carriers supporting/covering landings. If the bomber groups get tired just change secondary mission to rest)

the 132 RCT at Irau got pretty wet when all the transports sank. There are 2 enemy TF's in Gili area. I thought one was a bombardment TF but it might in fact be more carriers. If it's a bombardment TF there could be fireworks tonight at PM (supply there is under 2k so I am running in everything. If no fight then PM gets 4k supply. Spruance is heading north looking for a battle. (a suprise battle I hope)

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/06/42

OK it was abombardment TF. The reason it took the extra day was Mutsu. The big slow beast. Spruance used the entire day fueling so he will not leave Townsville till this turn. The damaged ships have all been routed to Cairns (closer thn Townsville) S-42 went into port at PM and New Orleans is going to try the same thing. (neither will last another day at sea) Lets sea if all those bomber groups from Cooktown to Townsville fly

all ships involed in the last surface battle are in port Cairns. Ships from the first Mutsu/Hiei battle have begun arriving Noumea and been sent back to PH. Replacement ships are forth coming. In 3 weeks (If Port Moresby can last that long) I will have a fair number of crusiers and carriers to work with. Irau's airfield is nearing completion (level 1) I will station a fighter group there for transport cover and as the airfield grows I can target Lunga. (still no airfield there)

mogami -> Battle of Port Moresby (11/3/2002 2:31:20 AM)

Greetings, I am posting this early since if I wait 15 turns it will make one very long post. I think the allies might win the battle for Port Moresby. Massive 2 day carrier battle.
Shokaku,Kaga,Soryu,Zuikaku,Shoho versus Lexington,Yorktown,Hornet and Enterprise. 2 USN CV badly damaged and limping for port. All IJN CV except Soryu hit USN surface TF drives IJN transport TF's away from Port Moresby. PM defenders have fought off two Japanese assaults so far. Reinforcments are being flown into to help. supply below 1k

When I first saw the transports at PM I began airlifting one of the 7th Aus div Bde there. The next day I began moving a engineer unit there as well (2 C-47 groups at each Cooktown and Townsvllie. On the first day the Cooktown groups lifted supply while the Townsville groups moved troop. Last turn one of the Cooktown groups began moving the engineers (I want to try to speed repair of PM so all these Carrier groups can move out.)

I am not sure if either Enterprise or Hornet will make it back to Cairns they both need to stay afloat 3 more days and have passed 60 floatation damage (and are still on fire) Soryu continues it's charmed life. (As well as the Japanese BB's) But at present there are no enemy transports unloading at Port Moresby. I am sending the 3rd Bde of the 7th by transport (as well as supply and another AA unit. I think I just might be able to retain Port Moresby.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/30/42

Night Time Surface Combat, near Port Moresby at 10,40 2 damaged DD's from yesterdays air attack trying to get into port are caught and sank they would no have made it to Cairns. I thought Buna was empty and airlifted a few troops to Dobadura thinking to march to Buna and cut off the retreat route of the Japanese at Port Moresby, however the 2nd recon flight over Buna discover Japanese troops there (hmmm never go with one day of recon)
Know I have to see if a) I can airlift (float plane since there is no airfield at Dobadura) enough troops to capture Buna b. if I can supply it. I'll look at sending some engineers and building a level 1 field.

mogami -> up date (11/7/2002 9:32:49 AM)

Greetings, this gets me back on my 15th and 30th schedule.
Port Moresby is now firmly in allied control. All enemy troops have been pushed up towards Buna. supply is over 5k. USS WASP is enroute and will raise operational carriers to 4.
The Japanese continue to send bombardment TF's to PM and very heavy air attacks from Rabaul/Lae/Gili. I am shifting fleet HQ from Townsville to Cairns (30k fuel there Townsville has been sucked dry with 20k unloading there at present. Will shift AO's from SOPAC to moving fuel from Brisbane north.
I expect the next several weeks to contain a number of night surface actions at PM with possible carrier versus carrier battle if Japanese send their remaining CV's down.
