ceyan -> Normally impossible to take over Homeworlds? (11/27/2011 12:16:47 AM)

Can't say I've ever run up against this in previous games, but its been several months since I tried it so I could be just forgetting. I'm the Humans trying to take over a homeworld of a race (Wekkarus) I've had locked down in the corner of the map since almost the beginning. I don't know how longs it has been in game terms since I first invaded their homeworld, but its been about 3 hours of real time playing. I started with about an even number of troops (300-350k) not counting the militia bonus. Since then I've had a couple of fleets on rotation blockading the planet while my original assault fleet has been ferrying more and more troops to the planet, to date I've easily racked up more than a million troops on this planet.

They've got no facilities, no other races with ground bonuses and no ground leader, while I've got a leader with +8% troop maintenance and +25% ground attack strength (no negatives). In the entire combat, they've managed to build another few troop units and I've only killed off about half of their 100k population bonus. This can't be normal, can it? I'm hesitant to make a bug report out of this before finding out for sure.

Hi Ceyan,

As with many things, it depends. Uploading a save file might actually be the quickest way to figure out what's going on.

Regards,

Drop 100 troops on them, it may be easier to upgrade the transports to carry more troops

If that fails Nuclear Bombard them, and watch your reputation go downhill

Or use the Planet Destroyer! Joke!

Homeworld got Massive populations, dont forget populations can help now to defend the world too.
When the leader/Governor got Troop Recuit abilitys too, they can recruit reinforcements faster then you can get new troops with ships.

You realy need a strong overmight on these planets even when you think you got the better boni. I learned this at the hard way, lost 3 troop leader and 40 troops while i tryed to invade a strong colony.

I did not notice those strength numbers, and had some surprises when doing my invasion of well defended colonies. Not that it mattered, I was running over them, I just had to ferry more troops into the fray. I learned my lesson and started invading only one of those well defended ones at a time. 260 troops took control of their capital just fine, though :)

Over time I massively outnumbered them, but never at any one point in time. My initial drop wasn't making headway so I went and picked up more nad dropped them. It was a whole series where I'd be just under them at the start, they'd get me down to about 100-150k (while they still took no losses of any significance) and I'd ferry in another 300-350k (which would put me above them in strength by about 50-100k. Those guys would slowly get massacred, and I'd ferry in more and have a slightly bigger bonus. Then I had to refuel my assault fleet and by the time I could ferry in more I'd almost lost the planet and the cycle would start all over again. Never once did they go under 50k from their original numbers.

Unfortunately I saved over game rather than hit Save as like an idiot, and when I went back to re-create it I was so frustrated (and much bigger at the time) that I took 3 times their numbers and won although it still took quite some time and I lost quite a bit doing it.

This functions as intended and is not a bug. It is based off of quite numerous player responses in these forums.

Also, did the Wekkarus have any defensive structures on the planet? These can also vastly improve their defensive bonuses and stack numbers heavily in their favor when combined with militia and the fact that human troops (like all other troops) get a penalty fighting in environments other than their home environment (Continental in this case).

Sounds like you had a Stalingrad scenario, there! You have to outnumber the defenders on the ground, almost always. If you never outnumber them on the ground, but keep shuffling reenforcements into the fight, you will lose just like the Germans did, with nothing to show for it but lots of dead people!
