Seems like it is too easy in this game I never seem to run out so I can just build build build. Seems like this would be a good galaxy option.

Difficult Economy - Less Economy - Normal - More Economy - Easy Economy

I don't really have any economic crisis, however, I also usually play a peaceful, diplomatic, research oriented democracy. I do play on normal difficulty with much slower research (also more expensive) and find that helps to balance it. If I want to rush some R&D projects my economy usually will take a significant hit. Also, quickly creating a large fleet or many stations will have an effect.

Mostly it's about being smart.

tbh, I wouldn't mind seeing some economic options and viability. It'd be cool to have sudden shortages, depressions, recessions, booms, and such. I wonder if those would be within the scope of new random events?

Have you tried starting with a Harsh homeworld?

I have found the main factor that affects how economically difficult the game is is your homeworld quality.

Playing on harder levels give you less money or (and) the A.I more.Try that.

Also, government type can play a huge role. Try playing as, say, a Mortalen Military Dictatorship for example. I garuntee if you try to play it like you would an Ackdarian republic, you'll be broke in ten years.

Thanks for all the tips will try these!

If you play on harder difficulty levels, and / or with the other empires being larger and more advanced, you will have to maintain a larger military.  Otherwise, other factions can take you out fairly easy.  Thus, the economic aspect will be more difficult simply because you have to maintain a much larger army.

I'd also suggest going with what Woodman said. Having a harsher starting condition will make a big difference.

Compared to RotS i have much less money problems playing with a Dhayut even even with tons of Explorer you start with.
But i notice Dhayut start with a much bigger population on the homeworld then before at RotS.

Government & Race has a massive influence in this game(as it should be). I played those yellow insects with insane population growth & democratic government...I was rich as f***
then I tried higher difficulty + the brown insects with Hive government and I struggled all game long to balance my economy[:)]
