w1p -> I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 1:29:13 PM)

How comes sprint is only ever used for moving towards an attack target? There's a few more times sprint should be used I think

Escape order issued - ships should definately be sprinting
Right click and "sprint here" option maybe

Those are the only two I can think of now, just playing and my explorer's keep getting ravaged by pirates who are sprinting as they attack, and my explorers are cruising to get away!!!

Nedrear -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 2:01:47 PM)

A smart explorer HYPERJUMPS away. Much quicker!

Locarnus -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 2:19:12 PM)

unfortunately the explorers are not that smart.

my explorer checks out a planet over which a kaltor is stationed.
all resource values have already been checked out and there are no ruins.

but the explorer continues to the planet, directly towards the charging kaltor.
then it stops and the planet and only then turns away (but not from the kaltor) at cruise speed.

so the kaltor at 34 speed is faster than the cruise speed (26 or so) but slower than flank speed 40 or so.

the explorer gets eaten, of course

Nedrear -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 3:22:16 PM)

And that's why I micromanage. I get an alarm... I look... I tell him "move away!".

WoodMan -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 3:24:02 PM)

Me too, the escape command doesn't always work, its like they dont register the threat, I usually tell it to hyperjump to somewhere directly inline with the direction its already facing so it doesn't have to turn around first.

On a sidenote, Explorers seem much better at escaping pirates, its the space creatures they seem to struggle with.

Locarnus -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 3:35:42 PM)

the best at escaping are freighters,

they escape from pirates in a system, altough you are allied with those same pirates and the pirates do not attack.

needless to say, that you cant change the stance of civilian ships towards flee when attacked and have to leave it on "flee if enemy ships are sighted"

the allied pirates just need to park a ship in one of your resource important systems, and and all your freighters flee, wrecking the economy (again)

Nedrear -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 3:41:19 PM)

Use the ally pirate bug. Shot them for free! You pay them to build new ships, so of course they are free to practice!

Locarnus -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 3:51:41 PM)

yes, I can do that as a human, my prob is, that it can affect the ai

I think the shoot them for free and the fleeing freighters are just 2 effects of the same bug, that the pirates are not entirely regarded to be neutral when you have an alliance/pay protection

ASHBERY76 -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 3:56:43 PM)

Explorers do not seem to register monster or pirate threats until damaged when you use explore system or sector order.

yep, i can confirm this, although the message "... is attacked by ..." pops up

Erik Rutins -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 4:05:43 PM)

Hm, could be a bug, do any of you have a save file showing the incorrect escape behavior?

Regards,

- Erik

cookie monster -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 4:41:47 PM)

It's probably quicker to use the editor and make a test of the escape behaviour.

it seems suspect to me as I have to engage escape behaviour with E to get the explorer out of trouble

The explorer usually gets killed as the early hyperdrive take a long time to engage

w1p -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 4:52:53 PM)

all this goes away from the issue which is why do ships not sprint when escaping? :) I think this should be fixed/implemented/improved

Cauldyth -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 4:59:38 PM)

I always envisioned this as the ship diverting power to the jump engines as they power up. Makes it more suspenseful! [:)]

I think that actually is often what is happening, especially with early reactor techs.

w1p -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/27/2011 6:47:44 PM)

Always have 2 reactors in my explorers otherwise your hyperdrive speed is painfully slow. There's enough power for sprint + hyperdrive...

Yeah I think that the base model should carry 2 by default. Speed is everything for explorers.

Manzikert -> RE: I want to sprint!! (11/28/2011 3:15:05 AM)

I almost never have explorers destroyed and I don't micromanage them? Am I putting more engines on than other people or what? I usually have 10-20 and maybe 1 will be destroyed outside of war all game.

I also cannot imagine having less than 2 reactors on a ship until you have much better reactors.
