Bingeling -> RE: Newb Question: Difference between StarBase and SpacePort (11/27/2011 6:37:29 PM)

1: Starbase construction yards may be used for military retrofit, to your disadvantage. Starbase default designs are gas miners. I never build them, but could build them if I want an armed gas mine and don't want to edit designs. 2: State ships by default goes to closest yard. For large fleets it is a good idea to send them to major space ports. 3: I think you can put research labs pretty much on any base (probably not mining bases). The game is usually not too picky about what goes where, but has a few limitations. By default space ports got a few of each research lab, and research stations got only for specific type. 4: They are upscales in AI default designs. More weapons, construction yards, docking bays, and more, on the larger sized. If you design yourself you can do as you please. You can retrofit to new design from ship list, and you can retrofit from small to medium by ctrl-right click on the base. 5: I don't build them. Usually bases are built where your mouse cursor is if you build "close and personal". 6: You can always build a mine by having a constructor selected and ctrl-right on the target planet/cloud to find the correct build order. Ctrl-right click is your friend to figure out all possible orders. To retrofit a fleet at a specific spaceport it is also ctrl-right click with the fleet selected. You may have to zoom in to hit the space port, especially if covered by for instance a fleet marker.
