colonyan -> Newb Question: Difference between StarBase and SpacePort (11/27/2011 6:16:53 PM)

How does game differentiate them?
EDIT: I read star base can be built several per colony but only one space port.

1.
I've seen that private sector only orders ships at Space port.
Starbase construction yard never got orders.

2.
Does state ships retrofit using vacant construction yard?

3.
I've also seen that research labs can fitted in Starbase.
I felt research lab component maintenance to be quite low too.
Bascially research can be accelerated as much as the empire can afford the maintenance.
Does AI make extra research labs on star bases?

4.
What does Small, Medium, Large space port does make difference?
Are they just naming tag to sort out?
Is scrap and rebuild only way to replace space port?

EDIT:5.
How does star base position get decided?
Some times its directly on top of the planet/moon colony, or have some distance.

EDIT:6.
Is modifying monitor station design to have defense only way to set defense on
mining station? Would be really handy if I can choose plain star base from
left lower corner small button menu.
Or can construction ship build remote star base?

Excuse me for throwing so many question. If its been answered, I apologize.

1: Starbase construction yards may be used for military retrofit, to your disadvantage. Starbase default designs are gas miners. I never build them, but could build them if I want an armed gas mine and don't want to edit designs.

2: State ships by default goes to closest yard. For large fleets it is a good idea to send them to major space ports.

3: I think you can put research labs pretty much on any base (probably not mining bases). The game is usually not too picky about what goes where, but has a few limitations. By default space ports got a few of each research lab, and research stations got only for specific type.

4: They are upscales in AI default designs. More weapons, construction yards, docking bays, and more, on the larger sized. If you design yourself you can do as you please. You can retrofit to new design from ship list, and you can retrofit from small to medium by ctrl-right click on the base.

5: I don't build them. Usually bases are built where your mouse cursor is if you build "close and personal".

6: You can always build a mine by having a constructor selected and ctrl-right on the target planet/cloud to find the correct build order. Ctrl-right click is your friend to figure out all possible orders.

To retrofit a fleet at a specific spaceport it is also ctrl-right click with the fleet selected. You may have to zoom in to hit the space port, especially if covered by for instance a fleet marker.

Thanks! I will make use of control-right click.

Being able to add research lab seems to be really (almost imbalance) strong ability.
Since I found the star base can accommodate research labs, my research rate soar.
Until then I thought finding research bonus system was absolute must. Now its little less important.
If AI empire don't use extra space base labs, they will left at stone age compared to human player who actively build them.

The issue of a 15 ship fleet going to a single nearest starport to retrofit needs to be fixed. I've seen an empire of tens of starports with 3 constructions yards each underutilised become the advisor AI sends the whole fleet to a single starport.

I design my own mining bases and add one high tech lab on mining bases and one energy lab on gas mining bases. It has been working so far.
