Good afternoon all.

We have finally come to agreement on HRs and intial setup...

I am pleased to announce that..

bilbow and hartwig.modrow have agreed to take command of the Empire of Japan, while denisonh, nasvillen, and myself will man the Allied side of things.

I am under the impression Bill and Hartwig will be doing an AAR from their side possibly, which we will not be viewing...

I will mention later how we plan on splitting commands and such up on our part. I am not sure what Bill and Hartwig are doing, maybe a Navy/Army thing... seems like the popular thing to do.

This will be Scenario 2 with the latest beta.

Game options:

House rules:
Allies can only give orders to existing TFs on turn 1. (Force Z may be re-directed.)
LCUs in China can be moved on turn 1
Only one KB port strike on turn 1. Any location.
No 4E bombing below 10k ft (except for NAVY 4Es)
Invasions of base or dot hexes only.
No sub invasions.
Units with permanently restricted HQ’s must not cross national borders.
Units with temporarily restricted HQ’s must pay full PP to transfer to non-restricted HQs before moving across national Border.
No switching land unit HQ to unrestricted air HQs etc. or any other gamey variation to do this cheaply.
Max sweep and CAP are at second best maneuver band.
IJN forces can't go into the shaded region next to the entry/exit points of Off map bases.
ASW task force 4 ship max.
Japanese cannot invade deep in allied territory 1st turn. (Within LBA fighter coverage).
No city *or night* bombing under 20,000 ft.
Para units must be whole before para droppping.
No Allied Air or naval units in Russia are allowed, even if Russia is activated.
No more then one 4E Squadron may operate from a single base in China.
No strategic bombing in China and no strategic bombing out of China till 6/44. Jap/Allies
Japanese units from Kwantung may not move anywhere until PP will be paid to change commands the same goes for China Exp Force but Units belonging to China Command may move to Kwantung freely.
Japanese Mongolian Cav Divisions are excluded from this rule.
Chinese units may not leave China unless PP are paid to change their command.
Japanese cannot use units from Kwantung outside Manchuria unless they transfer them and pay the PPs.

This may seem like a lot of HRs.. but it really isn't. It seems to be pretty standard, and we all agreed that we don't want to be doing anything gamey. Not that would anyways, we just wanted to put everything in fine print.

My dear and very proper Grandmother had a similar weakness for "bodice rippers." I remember she once was caught reading a love story set in the Mexican-American War entitled "Love is a Wild Assault." Very shocking stuff, but she lived to be 100 and didn't much care what we younguns thought.

The idea of a team game is interesting to me. Less time pressure and a built in sounding board for ideas.

Basically, our plan is stop the Japanese... and take back what we lose in 42/43... nothing major.

Have to qualify the "stop japanese" phrase. Skilled Japanese players can refocus and do things that the Allies can do little to stop initially, but even in scenario 2 cannot do everything at once without assuming some risk. Key is to determine where they are taking risk and strike/defend.

A good example is PM. If the Japanese bring it, they have it. The question is how much do you want to lose for what gain, and if he brings a bunch including CVs, where is he taking risk to achieve this Course of Action.

Those are the questions that will arise relatively quickly in the first month of the game.

I see you guys agreed on a HR to limit night bombing but know that the latest beta changes fixes night bombing ... groups come in scattered and not very effective .. a little flak taking its fair share on each scattered group makes night bombing more of a decision than ealier releases ...

I agree with aces on the night bombing. Run a test. It is very difficult for them to co ordinate as well as find the targets. You will see alot of "straying".

Here is the setup we have decided.

Still not sure how Bill and Hartwig will split up things...

Harvey - SWPAC, Burma, India and DEI, Commonwealth
Me - NOPAC, SOPACw/Lloyd, Canada, Philippines
Lloyd - US Logistics, SOPACw/Jeff, China, Russia

I will let Harvey and Lloyd post as they wish.

The first turn there isn't a whole lot to do for us, as we can only move certain units per house rules.

Hawaii

I plan to max out Hawaii as it is one of the most important hubs/areas on the map, if not the most.

All of the bases on the island chain can be beefed up, both port and airfield.

Truk, Marianas, Midway, South coast of Japan & Wake will be the patrol targets of the PH subs and surrounding areas… However, I cannot give orders to any of the subs that are not already out on patrol.

I plan to move my carriers as fast as I can away from action for the time being, as they will get sent to the bottom as soon as the KB shows up, if they're around.

My gameplan here is to have them in the SOPac area to take a shot at any un-escorted invasion force, pending no KB activity in the area. Harvey has mentioned knocking off many un-escorted invasion TFs this way right off the bat, as have I in AI games.

West Coast/Canada

Major shipyards will be maxed as will the following more than likely:
Prince Rupert
Vancouver
Seattle
Tacoma
Portland
Alameda
Mare Island
Los Angeles
San Diego

All pilots with 50 exp plus will go to reserve and I will fill up all trainers and pull 50 exp pilots and send them to needed areas as soon as the training program is up and going.

B-26 Marauders to train Naval Attack at 100 ft, 100%. I plan on transferring them from Eastern USA to San Francisco, where I will have Lloyd ship them to the front for me. SO or SW Pacific.

2nd Marine Def Bn is prepared for Pago Pago. I don't see any reason not to ship it there, and start maxing out Pago Pago, as I plan to hold it. This will be our vital base/area along the supply route to Auz/SoPac. I am not sure what exactly Bill and Hartwig will take in this area, but I am under the impression the Japs in Scen 2 can advance far further than historical...

34th Infantry Rgt can be shipped to PH where it forms part of 24th Division. If we need this elsewhere, as we don’t feel PH is threatened, than I will have Lloyd send it the same area as the above mentioned.

I am considering beefing up Kodak Island and not Dutch Harbor.. more on this later, after further discussion with my war partners.

I will send all fleet boats to Pearl Harbor, and probably the S Boats to Aus for Harvey to use as he sees fit.

SoPac/SWPac

Tahiti (maxed)
Suva/Nadi (maxed) (So close to Noumea that Pago-Pago should be maxed first, then look at situation)
Pago-Pago/Savii (maxed) See above..

Phoenix Isl- Not sure yet… so easily taken by Japan…can’t defend everywhere. Thoughts?

Johnston Isl – would be great to hold, but if Japan wants it, I think they could easily take it

**Phoenix/Johnston Isl- We will just have to determine the man Japanese axis of advance. They can't be everywhere, but they can usually take what the want in the first year or so of the war, especially in Scen 2. If they do a Manila strike, they would probably have a major thrust through the DEI to take that as soon as possible, and use at least some of the KB to support that. At least, that would be my thoughts..

Xmas Isl – (maxed/garrisoned) what are PBEM vets thoughts on the Line Islands?

TF 408 NE of Espiritu Santo will return to Sydney and disband there. Extra CA and troopships are always welcome. Harvey/Lloyd can decide how to use those.

TF 407 in Canton Isl is destined for Noumea(so they unload the artillery there). I am thinking about sending these to Xmas or Pago/Pago. I will then have the remaining ships disband in Sidney. If Lloyd would like them in the West Coast, then they can decide who needs them more. Same reasons as above, plus having that wonderful AGP (can re-supply PT boats, one remedy against Bombardment TFs). In AI I can usually hold Noumea, I think this should go somewhere else.. we will decide soon...

Philipinnes

I plan on combining as many LCUs as possible, which is far better than fragments fighting disoriented…

I like saving the Cebu BF…large support and radar…

I plan on moving main defense to Clark Field, as Bataan and Manila wouldn’t likely be attacked from the sea… however I am about convinced they are planning a port attack at Manila turn one, and will probably completely wreck the majority of our assets there. They will retreat to Bataan or Manila once Clark is taken… which is usually a signal of the beginning of the end.

***I say I am about convinced, soley based on the way Bill and Hartwig asked about port strike rules on turn one. TO ME, it doesn't sound like they will attack Pearl turn one, but if they do, we will take either hand of cards we are dealt.

This can be a bear for Japan if done correctly and I plan to give him a bloody nose every chance I get... I have read numerous AARs about surprising some invasion TFs on the way to the Philippines, or DEI and such...

Davao’s PBYs will go to Soerabaja, and AVD to Port Morseby or wherever Harvey would like it.

Logistics
From the sound of things, Lloyd will be handling all logistics requests in my theater, and I will provide appropriate escorting and protection. Doing this in the first part of the year with the assets given, could prove to be a difficult task. It will be interesting to see how we work on this together, as we both decided to handle SWPac jointly so to speak, because of this relationship/setup.

Keep in mind the majority of what I mentioned cannot be adjusted on turn 1 because of HRs, but I just wanted to layout my game plan at least.

We plan on defending in the places we can, and not everywhere. That is not possible or smart.

I suggested our defensive positions/supply routes/major reinforcement areas based off of the image Sardaukar uses in his "Newbie guide" because I feel like that is an excellent plan.

I will use Nemo’s suggestions/guide/posts on taskforce composition, which is TOP NOTCH. Highly recommended. This will be easier to do, once our assets our plentiful, and more ships become available.

I will let Lloyd and Harvey fill you in on their respect areas/Nationalities.

Chiefs Bears ....as Cribtop reminded me, and I am sure CB wouldn't have let me forget...as he reminds me we suck, just like his Vikings...so its mutual I guess.

The Orton Era lasted a grand total of one play, a dislocated finger, and could earn him a $2.5 million dollar paycheck if he never plays again. Not a bad paycheck if you ask me...(he should return, a dislocated finger is nothing, trust me, I have had far worse.)

As the Palko era entered its third game, he came away with a win and an offensive shootout, winning 10-3 on a prayer he threw up at half and McCluster had pigskin magnet in his paws... a touchdown is a touchdown I guess, but it was still stupid. McCluster is the worst excuse for a roster spot I have ever seen...

If Justin Houston doesn't get Def Player of The Week (7 T, 3 Sacks, 1 FF), I will let my wife do more of this "Chirstmas Shopping" thing she always talks about.

I saw a hilarious column on Palko's stats so far... half of his possessions are punts, 7 turnovers... pathetic..

Did I mentioned I hate Todd Haley.. freakin bum he is...He seems to be so in over his head it isn't funny.

Now, I realize we have lost our Pro Bowl Saftey, RB, QB, our great TE, and good MLB... but still, he sucked when they were healthy. 2010 playoffs you say?

My answer, Charlie Wies and the "brutal...[8|]" AFC West...

I have no idea what we need to do, but I would rather fall on a pitchfork than watch any more games this year...

SUMMARY OF SITUATION, 22ND NOVEMBER, 1941.
General situation.
1. The fact remains that he R.A.F. Far East Command is not yet in a position to fulfil its responsibility of being the primary means- of resisting Japanese aggression. The calls of the war in Europe have allowed-it to develop only a fraction of the necessary strength.
2. Re-equipment of squadrons have not taken place and is not likely to do so in thenear future; Vickers Vildebeestes are still our main striking strength. Buffalo fighters have arrived, it is true, but their performance and armament are disappointing, and inexperience pilots are still being trained to man them.
3. The aerodromes in Northern Malaya on which so much is to depend, especially during the early stages of a war, have none of the pre-requisites of secure air bases for occupation in the face of the enemy. The number of fighters available is very inadequate for providing effective fighter 'cover. Both heavy and light A.A. guns are quite insufficient. Dispersal arrangements for aircraft and their protection from blast are not as complete as planned. And, in the absence of an adequate air raid warning system the aerodromes are open to surprise attack.
4. But the role of the Command remains constant. It is not practicable to alter it.
It is: —
(a) To find the enemy at sea as far away from Malaya as possible: then
(b) to strike hard and often,
(c) to continue attacks during the landing operations: and
(d) in co-operation with the Army to delay his advance.
While real progress has been made in fitting the Command for its allotted tasks, deficiencies are still apparent in almost every aspect of its functions.
5. The Army in Malaya is also still weak: its additional interim strength considered necessary to ensure security until such time as the air strength had been built up is not present in the Colony. It is over-extended in its dispositions, a state of affairs forced upon it by its many and widely scattered commitments.
6. In a country like Malaya it is not difficult for the enemy to obtain information about our forces. He was well served by a long-established system of agents.
7. For their part the Japanese have already occupied Indo-China. While no certain information could be obtained by F.E.C.B. it is patent that they are building up their forces there and are preparing operational facilities in Siam. Japanese reconnaissance flights over Borneo and Malaya have become so frequent by October 1941 that a section of Buffaloes have been stationed at Kota Bahru to curb those over Malaya.
Deterioration of the Political Situation.
8. During 1941, relations with Japan have became increasingly strained. The attitude of the Siamese Government was doubtful. It professed great friendship for Britain and sent two goodwill missions to Singapore to cement this friendship. Nevertheless, the Japanese have continued to reconnoitre Siam and to make preparations for utilising that country as a Base: they accelerated the provisioning of the aerodromes at Singora and Patani, which they also extended to make them suitable for modern aircraft. As November 1941 progresses, evidence of Japanese activities increases until, as of today the information at G.H.Q's disposal is sufficient to indicate that Japan is about to embark upon a further major venture in South-East Asia.

On 22nd November, 1941, G.H.Q. issued their appreciation of the situation.
9. Briefly, this appreciation considered that any further major action by Japan in the near future would take place from South Indo-China against Siam, rather than from North Indo- China against the Burma road. G.H.Q. did not, however, disregard the possibility of Japan making a " gambler's throw " against Malaya or even against Singapore itself. G.H.Q. concluded that the most likely operation which would be called for on our part in the immediate future is to the set plan " Matador," namely an advance by our land forces into South-East Siam. A.H.Q. is accordingly instructed to make all preliminary moves and to be ready to support " Matador " at 72 hours' notice, and was informed that this support for " Matador " is to take precedence over the preparations then being made for an International Air Force to operate in South China. A.H.Q. was also warned that the full reconnaissance plan for detecting the approach of a sea expedition against Malaya might be ordered later.

Action taken by A.H.Q. to implement Operation " Matador".
10. A.H.Q. immediately adopted the following measures for reinforcing N. Malaya.,
. (a) Formed Headquarters Norgroup to be assembled on 24th November at Kuala Lumpur alongside Headquarters IIIrd Indian Corps. The Commander appointed was Wing Commander R. G. Forbes, Station Commander, Alor Star, in the absence of the Commander 'designate, Group Captain A. G. Bishop, who was away in South China.
(b) Ordered No. 21 (F) Squadron, R.A.A.F., to move to Sungei Patani: move to be completed by 25th November.
(c) Put No. 34 (B4) Squadron (Blenheim IV) at short notice to move to Alor Star.
(d) Made provisional arrangements for the - move of No. 60 (B) Squadron aircraft (7 Blenheims) out of Kuantan to Butterworth.
- This move" is necessary if the reconnaissance plan is to be brought into force because No. 8 (GR) Squadron, R.A.A.F. would require the accommodation at Kuantan for carrying out that plan.
(e) Instituted certain other precautionary, measures, including, the warning of our fighters at Kota Bahru, Sungei Patani and Singapore of the action they are to take if unidentified aircraft are sighted. Training is allowed to proceed with certain restrictions.
11. Commander, Norgroup, was informed that the following squadrons would support Operation " Matador " : —
(a) No. 62' (B) Squadron (Blenheim I) from Alor Star.
(b) No. 34 (B) Squadron (Blenheim IV) from Alor Star.
(c) No. 21 (F) Squadron, R.A.A.F. (Buffaloes) from Sungei Patani.
(d) No. 27 (NF) Squadron (Blenheim I) from Sungei "Patani.

Japanese Estimate:

Expect first day port attack to Support Initial Japanese Main Effort (only Major Targets with significant assets)
- Manila to eliminate major Naval assets from ABDA/Asiatic Pacific Fleet, particularly US subs, then divert to either SWPAC/SOPAC or DEI. (most likely)
- PH to support SoPac focused advance
- Singapore to Support DEI campaign initially with KB with intent to eliminate major Naval assets from ABDA/Asiatic Pacific Fleet (Least likely)

Major initial strategic options for Japanese
- Borneo/Sumatra to secure oil/resources
- Rabaul/PM/Noumea to secure Southern flank and threaten communications with Australia
- Rangoon to sever Burma road

Follow on Objective options:
- Western Australia
- Eastern Australia
- New Zealand? (Seen it done)
- Ceylon/India
- Line islands/sopac area to isolate US from SWPAC
- PH to make secure gains in the central pacific and severely hamper Allied logistics and offensives in 1943-45

Key regions:

Pearl Harbor and Hawaiian Islands: Although the Japanese have taken PH in other PBEMs, suggest that if the Japanese do not strike PH first, that is not as likely to happen. We will know relatively quickly if that is their plan as you will see a concerted rush to take Midway and the Line Islands. It is a good precaution to reinforce initially as any forces there are forward and ready to be deployed.
> Assessment: If the Japanese do not push early, not likely to be attacked barring major successes elsewhere. That means while continuing to reinforce, push some elements out to defend key areas necessary to maintain LOC with Australia.

PM/Noumea: If he wants these, he will have these. Key is to make sure if he doesn't bring enough horsepower that is becomes expensive. This is an area where there is possibilities to strike, as Japanese Players will have CVs supporting DEI, Central Pacific, or refitting; pushing key air assets into DEI/Burma; and start pooling naval assets in Rabaul for the push on PM/Noumea. potential to intercept invasion TFs with no CV support to the New Hebrides and meet them with 1-2 CVs, as well as quick raid on Rabaul while staging and not covering with major air assets. If he comes with CV support and a heavy focus early, we must be careful as he will achieve results regardless. This is one to watch and requires an understanding of where the KB is to counter.

Ceylon/India: Been taken before in PBEMs and is definitely a possibility if forces are diverted from Kwantung and Home Islands. Ceylon is a deathtrap for British LCUs if the Japanese come in force. Very dangerous COA if they pursue this option early, as the Brits don't get too much too soon to defend everywhere. Harder to gauge then the PH scenario.

DEI: Obvious focus for Japanese. Can fight it as best we can, which means creating strongpoints on Sumatra, Java and Timor. Everything else is a loss. Java is undefendable, so key is interior strongpoints unable to be shutdown with bombardment. Need PPs to set up strongpoints early enough to be credible. If Japanese do not commit CV assets, can create havoc with surface forces. Need to supplement British and Dutch asset with USN assets from Asiatic Fleet. Critical to evacuate as much of those assets out of Philippines.
>Assessment: Must fight and can delay if strongpoints are established with enough assets.

Singapore/Malaya: Lost cause. Question is how long can it hold. Ideally until late February.
>Assessment: Defend with enough to keep Japanese honest and use assets to form Sumatra strongpoint. Try to focus defense on a couple of locations while pushing as much into Singapore in terms of forces and supply.

Philippines: Astride Japanese LOC with DEI. Japanese will often skim forces from Philippines invasion for efforts in SoPAC/SWPAC. Like DEI is a must fight. Can hold out well into 1942 if supplies stockpiled, supply expenditure managed, replacements carefully watched, and fortification built only where viable (Bataan/Clark). Supply limits now make the Bataan defense a little less viable (32k limit) than previously. Can try to construct a mini strongpoint on Mindanao, but only effective if the Japanese skim alot of forces from the 14th Army. Evacuation of Naval Assets from Philippines is a priority. Rebasing subs when Philippines become untenable is key.
>Assessment: Initial port strike at Manila likely to trash most of the assets. Damaged ones will not be able to run the "gauntlet" that the Japanese will set up (airborne/naval op to secure Jolo Island possible). Do not hesitate to scuttle assets not able to evacuate. With the KB in the area, this will be a real bitch. Evacuate select units but focus on a Clark AB/Bataan Defense.

SouthPacific: Beyond Noumea, expect Japanese to press to either interdict LOC between West Coast and Australia, and at very least construct a buffer if they are focusing on India/Ceylon. Thrusts towards Suva/Samoa may compliment similar operations against Line Islands. Watching early positioning of KB is key, as CV assets are necessary for operations in SoPAC.
>Assessment: If no enemy CVs here, good place for US CVs to base/operate. If Japanese come here in strength, similar approach as discussed with Noumea. West Coast Convoys should stay east and south of Canton and Samoa Islands until those are lost to the Japanese. Then consider east and south of Penryn Island (good place to put ASW assets). If Japanese occupy Canton and Samoa in force, Society Islands key to routing WC convoys.

Major Sofa Kingdom has issued a report on the whereabouts of General Treetop64, who was last reported flying into his headquarters in the Soviet city of Vladivostok from Dutch Harbor.

Apparently, B-18s are not meant to withstand enemy fire...... as his plane was last seen spiraling into the ocean just shy of the city, trailed by a pair of Ki-10s...

Kingdom and his staff have announced that General Nashvillen has recently been promoted to take his place, and is currently at headquarters as we speak.

If the Japs attack Manila and not Pearl, would I be able to run to Wake and pick up those Wildcat fighters to bring back and save? Anyone's thoughts?

Usually against AI, I send my carriers to Wake to punch that invasion force for a turn or so... I have sent my carriers south first turn in this game.

I think I will leave them be. 15 or so Wildcats aren't worth two, large carriers potentially at the bottom of the Pacific..
