Warspite3 -> If you can't colonize it, mine it? (11/30/2011 3:18:03 AM)

There's still much I don't know about DW so maybe a few here can give me suggestions and/or tips. I apologize if these questions were already answered in another thread. If so I imagine they are really old threads and things could have changed since then in patches and the expansions. Is it a good idea to just mine everything in sight if I have extra income to do so? If I have a lot of extra resources of the same type, will my freighters transport it to other empires and sell it off for extra income? Another question I have is about research, my research is going really slow. I never tried this but can a research base be built anywhere or does it have to be where there is a bonus of some sort? I am also wondering what are some good ways to increase my research speed? At last, yes I am guilty of not reading the manual, been playing the game too much and I say once again WOW it has really stepped up with these expansions!

You need a free trade agreement so sell needed ressources to others
It is not worth mining more than necessary in your or the enemies case apart of cases were the transport is too long for a ressource. A healthy private revenue for the private sector can help them - you income is NOT paying the mines!
Research point only need a research station of that kind to get the bonus regardless of one or ten modules. You can build them anywhere.
There is a research limit you can not outbuild. Still to increase research just build research stations until you reach the cap found in the last rider of the research window. How that works is in my answer to the research ceiling thread.

I mine everything and anything in my territory. It's just good habit. But if you're going to invest in mining outside of your territory, make sure that it is either for resources you desperately need, or for resources you can make a profit selling via free trade agreements. Small empires can become trading and military giants in this game.

Sounds like I need to re-think my mine like crazy idea. Another thing regarding research stations (or any station at that), I just noticed if I build one on my homeworld, it finishes quickly and gets up and running. If I build it out in space away from a planet, it takes much longer and I imagine that is because I have to wait for freighters to transport the components? Last thing I wonder is if there is any advantage building a station at a planet of choice or out in space other then it getting built faster since resources are already in planet cargo. I will check out that thread.

I agree with the wobbly block.

For me it is more a matter of constructor time. If I have a constructor I keep it busy all the time (cash/resources willing). Never go close to running out of places to mine. It is always more a question of what to mine (next).

Remember also that having extra can be damn handy if someone comes along and destroys one or more of your mining bases.

Take a look at your demand and the Galaxy Demand tab in the Expansion Planner.

You will always need Caslon/Hydrogen/Steel/Carbon Fibre.

Try to focus your constructors into meeting your greatest demand.

It takes a few clicks on the nearest resources in the Expansion Planner when you load up a game.

Ya I just build whats in demand.  Its mostly fuel or some sort of metals that mostly in demand.

All that means: I am mistaken to build my super luxury mining base with nine luxury mining extractors in the hope to make tons of cash now (V. 1.7.0.2). The maximum number of extractors is now three. Right?

It seems the max number in gas clouds is 4. Look at the post on the war forum.

HectorOfTroy -> RE: If you can't colonize it, mine it? (11/30/2011 9:29:20 AM)

At the start of the game I let constructors stay on auto for a bit. The after some time I check expansion planner and see what my empire needs. I then put all constructors on manual and build mining/gas/resort bases as I need them.

If youbuild too many mining/gas bases that you don't need it will cost you heaps in maintainance.

Ok, but it appears to me now that the max number on planets for harvesting luxury goods has declined either. Maybe, I am mistaken.*

* I have read Nedrear's post in the other section. I am still a bit confused.
