I just finished a short scenario in MCLV (18 turns) where you have to take a railroad just across a river on a small map. (I really need to start writting down the names of these scenarios.)

You only get a few rockets, strike aircraft, scouts and Motorcycles for support and it is very tough the whole way with mines, AT Guns, MGs, bunkers, a river crossing, and then an armored column of railroad cars to take out. Most of the VHs are within the town on the far side of the bridge and the Russians are dug into trenches. It took me 15 turns just to get across the bridge and then I had no chance of getting the VHs on the other side because of the stiff resistance.

Did I just screw up or are some of these scenarios designed to be draws? I got 1700 pts and the AI got 2000. Needless to say, HQ was not happy with my performance.

By design, it happens to the best of us.

Gary Tatro -> That is a tough senario (11/5/2002 2:26:10 AM)

If you are at all interested in going back and playing again what I did to win was use my strike aircraft to take out the russians artillary. Once this is done you will have a much easier time of it.
Also instead of having everyone cross the bridge I split my infantry force into two groups. One to cross the bridge (dumped a bunch of smoke first) and another to go accross the river with the trucks (if you went straight instead of taking a right accross the bridge). This gave me a flank on the town you would not normally get.

This senario was one of the toughest yet. I had to replay it because at one point my 2nd squad lead by Wirth was wiped out. :(

some of those scenarios must have been designed to end up in a draw..just wait until you get into Stalin Line.

About 85% of your troops are foot soldiers, entering from west edge...most victory locations are 50-60 hexes away..you have 20 turns...

Thanks guys. I was affraid I had lost my skill. I also didn't scout the map well because I didn't realize you could wade across that river until I saw some Partisans doing it, and doing it and doing it... All I had was a squad of 5 men holding that flank.

Just wait, the Donetz river battles will make you misty about Dubno!!:D :D

Some are designed as a draw and the points reflect this. For example, the first Stalin Line battle is an attempt to penetrate the line in a rush, the next is a prepared assault with all of the supporting weaponry. The campaign will play out historically for the average player. In other words, if you go to the Crimea do not expect to capture Ft Stalin:D and do not expect to capture Preobrezhenka, Panzermeyer failed

The battle is won or lost before the first shot.
