When playing on the bigger cluster maps I own two big clusters which are rather far apart from each other. What I noticed is that my 50 patrol frigates and escorts spend most of their time travelling back and forth in a steady both-way stream between the two clusters. Probably because the algorithm deciding the next patrol location is random and doesn't take distance into account.

This is not helpful since in order to achieve the same coverage it means I have to build twice as many ships. I only have 15 colonies plus about 20 mining stations. So 50 patrol craft should mean that each colony and each station should have one patrolling craft around it at any time, which is not what is happening because half of the craft are always in transit between the two clusters.

I also guess that on non-cluster maps the same happens except it is less noticeable.

I propose the patrol targe finding algorithm to work different: Each patrol craft assigns itself to a sector and stay in that sector for a long time before picking a new one. Picking a sector should be based on the amount of pieces to be defended there versus the amount of patrol craft already assigned to that sector. This way you would achieve a very natural distribution of patrol craft and at the same time prevent them from making long flights constantly.

Seems there must be a bug in where the ships choose to refuel. Or they are simply escorting civilian ships in transit?

In my recent game using the second beta patch, I noticed some bizarre AI behaviour. All of a sudden, about 20 ships from various different planets would choose to converge on a point in space just to the left of one of my systems. I assumed they were forming a fleet or something, but after travelling about 75% of the way there, they all seemed to abort and start returning to their respective homes. Then they would once again decide to converge on that point. I was very odd.

I have been running into similar situations after loading the patch. In my case the game is still fairly early and most of my ships were in my home system combined into fleets I had made. Several ships just started to head down and to the left for a short distance and then stop mid space. I don't remember thier posture so maybe they were heading to a perceiveed threat and the threat was cancelled... not sure. Haven't had any cases since then.

I believe we fixed this, but if you see it again in 1.7.0.3, please upload a save file.
