Cauldyth -> RE: Silvermist (12/2/2011 6:03:41 PM)

Yeah, there's no real effective ship defense against them. If they reach one of your ships, it's gone in a couple seconds. Better to have a lot of smaller ships than a few big ones, and load them up with ion cannons while skipping armour and shields.

Locarnus -> RE: Silvermist (12/2/2011 6:09:36 PM)

How fast is the silvermist intrasystemspeed?

Cauldyth -> RE: Silvermist (12/2/2011 6:52:07 PM)

They seem to have two speeds. When you first spot one it'll be at 'wandering' speed, which is about comparable to a ship's speed. But when they get close, they seem to sniff that your ship is near and increase to full speed. In that mode, they're very fast. They can close the distance to a ship in 2-3 seconds, and then another 2-3 seconds to eat it.

Cauldyth -> RE: Silvermist (12/2/2011 6:53:37 PM)

And the biggest individual SilverMist I've seen so far had around 3200 health, so you can imagine how many shots it'll take to kill it.

nammafia -> RE: Silvermist (12/2/2011 7:02:05 PM)

I will try your suggestion about no shield nor armor ships. This is actually fun. Though I must say we, the players, should be able to mod the image for Silvermist. The cotton ball looking image does nothing to reflect the danger these things are.

WiZz -> RE: Silvermist (12/2/2011 7:45:48 PM)

I disagree with you. It was done specially.
"How can this cute fluffy cloud hurt me?" - DW gamer-newbie thinks. A few second later he will be very surprised. [:D]

No shields are useless in the Silvermist battle! As are armor... just one more thing they need to eat first!

So you will lose ships, you just have to have enough ships to kill the silvermist before they are all eaten.

Actually shields are useless yes, but armor isn't completely so, although main effect of it is to be the thing gone first. The minimum I've seen to be able to defeat mists with one ship not damaging anything else than armor has been ion cannons 220 power with armor rating of 250. IIRC minimum armor to stay alive but nearly destroyed was ion cannons 220 and armor rating of 150. So you need a lot of stopping power and armor to do it. Another option is to build a ship with cruise speed of 55 (since the sprint speed is not guaranteed to be going on in combat situations (I haven't tried the mobility way yet with the mists).

Keston -> RE: Silvermist (12/3/2011 4:00:15 AM)

So basically the boffins are proposing either a fleet of super fast small ion cannon ships, one of slow suicide-mission ships, or an armor encased space monitor that destroys the mists before they can finish eating through the armor to the vitals.

Cooler and cooler. Is there some force field technology that allows them to be contained and kept as pets by evil galactic emperors?

Having it get loose and devour the planet while the Imperial escape shuttle darts away just in time is part of the fun.

Fellas... What's with breaking out physical notebooks and manually jotting down notes? All you have to do is "pause", then Windows <tab> out to a NotePad .txt file, make/alter your info, and save the file wherever you want. When done with the "Note" altering... Tab back into the game and continue. I do this all the time with a bunch of different games I like to keep notes on. Whenever I resume a game, I load up the current "note" file before starting the game itself.

Gandalf, I'm with you on this. I tried taking advantage of DW's ability to sit in the background while I pulled up notepad or word. But I got confused jumping back and forth and found I need the map infront of me as I'm reviewing notes. So the windows notepad option didn't work to well. In game map notes would be awesome!

Locarnus -> RE: Silvermist (12/4/2011 11:56:22 PM)

I spawned a silvermist in the dhayut homesystem, they had about level 2 technology.

They were unable to stop it, even in their homesystem.

It started around their secondary colony in their homesystem. The dhayut homefleet jumped in. It brought it down to 150 health or so, but everytime it ate a ship of them, it grew, and its health grew with it (not only its max health).
Then it ate the secondary colony.
Another 2 dhayut fleets jumped in, one after the other was eaten, pushing it down to 500 health of now over 2000 max health.
There was hope when one of the ships was a carrier. The fighters posed a real problem for the silvermist. It seemed to try to eat one of the fighters, but those are quite fast, and it can only chase one at a time.
It was on the brink of destruction, but then it ate the carrier and all fighters disappeared.

It attacked the homeworld of the dhayut, little problems with the def bases, but again with the fighters.
As soon as it attacked the fighter holding spaceport, all the fighters disappeared and it eventually ate the homeworld.

There are some things to learn here:
1. The AI has the firepower to kill a silvermist early on, but squanders the power needlessly, even in the homesystem.
2. Fighters are good against the silvermist, until the fighters disappear without good cause...
3. If a silvermist reaches max size (1500, with 4200+ health), it can not get stronger by eating stuff (it does not regenerate by eating stuff).
4. It doesnt seem to split until it regains full health, and the regeneration rate is fixed.
5. It doesnt seem to regenerate when at hyperspeed.

Conclusions:
6. The player needs to get involved, have resupply-ships and a fleet ready for intervention.
7. Fighters are nice, but keep the carriers out of trouble. Since fighters are immune to area weapons, that could also be a nice combination (emp area weapons, normal ones are not very effective vs silvermist).
8. If the silvermist has maxed out its growth, even single suicide ships can prevent it from splitting and wear it down, even though they get eaten.

Canute0 -> RE: Silvermist (12/5/2011 12:23:04 AM)

A carrier with NO weapons, and Evade/Evade tactics ! 3-4 Fighter bays should be enough, more just get the silvermist down faster. The carrier don't even need to have much speed.
Stay on focus at the Carrier, dont let him come near the silvermist, thats why the carrier shouldnt have weapons. I notice without weapons the carrier stay away, with weapons he try to shoot even with Evade tactic.
And i notice when you arn't focus at the carrier and his fight, something strange happen and the Silvermist catch the carrier and eat it.

The fighter disappear when their Fighter bay get damaged/destroyed.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Silvermist (12/5/2011 1:00:30 AM)

Interesting test. I tried the same in the pre-release versions specifically to make sure the AI could handle a Silvermist discovery. I didn't drop it in their home system though, but in a border system to simulate the way it would normally be discovered. More often than not, the AI was able to deal with it before it got completely out of hand. However, the AI often took severe losses and the earlier in the game the Silvermist showed up, the harder it was for any single AI empire to defeat it. That's about where we wanted it to be in terms of threat level.

We can certainly improve the way the AI deals with it, but we want it to have the potential (though not a probability) of being able to take out an AI empire.

I completely agree that in terms of strategy, when you see a message that a Silvermist has been encountered, be very aggressive and proactive in helping to deal with the issue if it's anywhere near you.

regards,

- Erik

Missiles tend to be a good weapon for carriers in terms of encouraging them to remain at long range.

Locarnus -> RE: Silvermist (12/5/2011 1:12:36 AM)

In the beginning is was just bad luck, it was down to 150 or so health.

The loss of the homeworld was a problem.
If the fighters would not disappear, when the fighter bays are destroyed, the loss of the homeworld could have been averted, even without their single carrier.

That's a SilverMist with 3508 health, and he didn't come alone...

Fideach -> RE: Silvermist (12/9/2011 12:40:57 AM)

We need Silvermist Trackers!

The bloody nano clouds don't stay in one spot long enough for me to destroy them all. Worse yet, they are spreading from the unpopulated sectors of space to the heavily populated sectors.

blastpop -> RE: Silvermist (12/9/2011 1:46:21 AM)

What is needed is the Silvermist dispersal weapon...

A new technology to research so it can go into mass production, that has proven the most effective way to eliminate the threat of the Silvermist. It takes a cloud of them and spreads them over a wide part of the universe- so much so that it would be a long time before they could ever be effective again. This new technology/device that can be put aboard destroyer and larger classes has been dubbed the Silverblaster. It remains to be seen if interspace governments will allow it to be placed aboard ships as the railgun consortium has friends in high places amongst political leaders. It also requires a software upgrade by its developers to make this wonder weapon a reality...

Only time will tell.

Fideach -> RE: Silvermist (12/9/2011 2:24:13 AM)

Tribbles.. I think that is going to be my nickname for the Silvermists now.

What a painful battle though.. With in two sectors, had endless swarms of Silvermists, three or four pirate bases sending swarms of ships to attack my refueling outposts. Then the Legendary Pirates show up to harass me too >.<
With in a few years, any colony or base was wiped out repeatedly.

Gelatinous Cube -> RE: Silvermist (12/9/2011 3:47:09 AM)

Yeah, when Legendary Pirates and Silvermist hit you at the same time, it's harder than a war since neither Silver Mist or Legendary Pirates will negotiate.

Fideach -> RE: Silvermist (12/9/2011 11:17:24 PM)

New game, as the Wekkarus for something different. 10 by 10 map, 1400 stars.. Just one sector north from where I started, at the very beginning of the game. The computer empire by me triggers the release of Silvermists.. Then my own explorer to the left of my home sector, releases them too >.< I do not see winning this.

It is possible... but you must change your point of view to meet the situation. The Silvermist are no longer just a monster irritating your exploration efforts, they are now the number one threat facing your empire. You must therefore do evyerthing based on that: Pull your fleets back, run away from silvermists when you can't beat them (because they feed on your ships), and invest in Ion tech ASAP!

Tribbles in Space! :P

Whydmer -> RE: Silvermist (12/10/2011 2:01:33 AM)

I released the silvermist about a sector west of my empire while I was fighting an enemy on the east side and subjugating independent colonies to my south.  This was my first time facing the silvermist...

I created a fleet to face them, started researching Ion tech, but not exclusively.

Yeah,... I don't think I responded fast enough.  Maybe I will write up some sort of AAR about my upcoming battle with them.  I am restarting from a save prior to the silvermist getting into one of my border systems destroying my lone escorts patrolling and eating 2 small colonies, and a resort base.  And then destroying my late arriving fleet created to deal with it.  I may have to go back to an even earlier save to have any real chance.

But I must say. I love this game.

Bison36 -> RE: Silvermist (12/10/2011 2:03:57 AM)

Houston, we have a problem. Fluffy has spawned two stars away from the human home world of Sol (actually Sol 3, Sol is a barren rock next to Sol, a star. This of course is confusing enough given the fact that humanity in its apparently infinite ability to create words decided to name the Star and every planet in their home system Sol. Hence Sol is orbited by Sols 1-7. I need to protect Sol the 3d, which is for simplicity sake is known simply as Sol 3.). Now my initial plan was to just ignore them until I developed a recreational requirement for cotton balls. I was thinking something along the lines of the Galactic Nail and Hair Salon. “Observe the awesome destructive nature of a black hole and the futile efforts of light trying to escape the event horizon while you enjoy a pedicure!” However, it appears these little fluff balls want to wipe humanity from the galaxy.

So if I understand this correctly. I need to send some of my finest to, uh, gloriously defend humanity, which is really just a delaying tactic. Note to self: Make a medal to honor the glorious defense of humanity against fluff balls for the navy. As I delay, I need to design and build a HUGE fleet of shieldless, Ion cannon laden warships? Once my armada of Ion cannon warships is complete send them off to a glorious battle with Fluffy and pray they wipe it out? Does this sound about right?

/sigh/ Humanity might be screwed. /sigh/
