Had this in 1702 and 1703, not sure if fixed in 1704.

On reloading a saved game, a pirate faction in alliance with you will attack you despite stil being in an alliance. If you cancel the alliance and offer a protection fee in the same action, this fails. If you cancel the alliance and then offer a protection fee in a seperate action, this succeeds.

I'm unable to reproduce this problem.

Some problems with pirate alliances were fixed in 1.7.0.2. If you started a game in earlier versions, you may not see all of these fixes.

Are you sure that you are not cancelling the alliance by attacking the pirates?

Do you have the savegame showing this problem?
