still loving this game and after my last thread about construction ships and how they work in the game and more playing i figured them out.

a couple more things i just don't quite understand. im playing with ROTS at the moment

1. research stations. i know these go on research locations but i was able to build them just in general space. they seem to produce there too. but do you guys put research stations in outer space or only on "research locations"? and when they are just in space how exactly do they work? cuz i notice freighters transport resources to them every now and then. do they need the resources to actually help my research or what? basically could you guys explain the whole research station thing to me and how they are intended to work and if you guys bother building them in general space?

2. colonization:auto vs. manual. what is the difference in this? i usually just automated it and the last few games i tried manual but i don't notice any difference. when it's manual what exactly do i control with colonies? is it just planetary facilities or is there other stuff that i need to set manually when on manual?

3. colony symbols. what exactly does the music note to the left of happiness in the box in the bottom left corner of the main view when a colony is selected stand for? is it culture? is that the same as development level? if not how i do find the development level?

this is for ROTS and thank you guys for all your explainations and help.

I hate to double post but i really could use some help, especially on the research stations. ive tried it in a few more games and still can't figure it out. also, is there anyway to change the physical size(sectors) in ROTS. im playing 100 stars and it seems to take my ships a while to get from one to another. it's giving me a 10by10 sector size for the 100 stars?

im using the irregular galaxy type.

it that normal?

thanks garrett

You can place research labs anywhere and they perform research. If you happen to put them on a location that has a bonus then you get a bonus as well.

Research stations can be placed anywhere, but at special locations they can get a research bonus. Freighters may bring them resources so that they have stocks to use for repair, or because they have cargo holds and are near other systems that may need those resources in the future.

There are several possible ways to handle this. Full automation, partial automation (suggest), using the expansion planner and galaxy map, or using the side menu and galaxy map overlay. The main advantage of controlling colonization is that you can control the prioritization of which system should be colonized first.

Culture and Development level are effectively the same thing.

The ability to change the size of the map was one of the additions made in Legends (well worth getting if you have somehow missed that fact [;)] ).

Research stations I just build at locations with bonuses. No reason to build them in outer space. Your freighters are probably carting fuel to them since their energy collectors which would otherwise power them are ineffective when not in a system. If I want more research capacity and don't have a bonus location I usually just put more labs on my spaceports.

I usually put labs on spacedocks and on monitoring stations that are positioned in deep space. Other that this - on resort stations if a black hole/neutron star/supernova provides bonuses to both scenery and tech. Never liked specialized research stations.

That should be documented somewhere (galactopedia, manual, colony screen).

I couldn't find it anywhere, that's why i asked. if you can find it let me know, so i can read it myself.
