I've tried all sorts of installs, reinstalls but I always get windows message 'Distant Worlds has stopped working' before anything appears.

Can you please check for the Distant Worlds crash dump file at the following location and post the contents here.

C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Code Force Limited\Distant Worlds\1.7.0.6\DW_CrashDump.txt

(or similar location if using a different version, e.g. C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Code Force Limited\Distant Worlds\1.7.0.0\DW_CrashDump.txt)

There is no crash dump file I can find. I have IE9 and windows media player BUT I have had a problem where only 64 bit IE runs, if I click 32 bit nothing happens (no error message etc, nothing) I wonder if that could be related. I've tried fixing it by uninstalling and re installing internet explorer with no luck

cookie monster -> RE: Game won't run (12/12/2011 6:08:01 PM)

i think your IE is the problem!

uk4caster -> RE: Game won't run (12/12/2011 6:24:17 PM)

I agree.....just wish I knew how to fix it. Any ideas anyone?

The missing 32-bit version of IE is almost definitely the problem here.

This link explains how to install 32-bit IE9 on Windows 7 64-bit:

It looks to me like my issue is the same as the one in this thread:

uk4caster -> RE: Game won't run (12/13/2011 3:24:33 PM)

I've already done the uninstall reinstall ie9 routine but ie9 32bit still seems missing?

Does the file C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe exist on your machine? If so, when you double-click iexplore.exe, does it launch IE?

uk4caster -> RE: Game won't run (12/14/2011 12:37:29 PM)

iexplore.exe exists but nothing happens when I click on it.

If you're willing to try a third-party tool, this one claims to be able to fix IE-related issues that sound very much like the ones you are experiencing:

http://majorgeeks.com/SF_IE_Restorator_d6521.html

All disclaimers apply, but looks legit.

Otherwise you could try the first two answers in this Microsoft forum:

uk4caster -> RE: Game won't run (12/15/2011 10:54:18 AM)

Tried all these helpful suggestions but it still won't run! Think I may have to give up.

Vampyrebe -> RE: Game won't run (12/15/2011 12:35:52 PM)

Hey there,

Even if this sounds weird, could you just try this one for me ? I had something similar to your case, but it is all now working perfectly...

Try this please :
- desinstall the game
- remove folders c:matrix games
- empty trash
- install it on the desktop...

Does it work there ?

I know this is truly weird, but I had an issue of this kind, and just by installing it on the destkop makes it work... Please, before giving it up, try installing it on the desktop and let me know if this works also for you :-)

I had the same problem and was going to give up but I tried this and it sure worked! My question is why because this method leaves a very cluttered desktop.

WoodMan -> RE: Game won't run (5/16/2013 11:49:28 AM)

To the guy above, where was the game installed previously? Was it in Program Files or Program Files(x86)? Or was it just in C:Matrix Games?

I only ask because Program Files and Program Files(x86) are not good places to install games especially if you have UAC enabled (which you should, I learned that the hard way in the past) or are not the administrator log-in. Because DW requests UAC confirmation every single time I try to run it I imagine it is not a good game to have installed in Program Files or Program Files(x86) which may be why it works on your desktop, *if* you had it in one of those locations before.

If this is the case, install your games to C:\Games rather than C:\Program Files(x86) in the future.

I actually installed it on my E:drive and I'm fairly certain it was Matrix or whatever the default without using Program Files. It's possible I used E:\Program Files\"?". I'll try it again when I get the chance; hope you're right. Thanks!
