How does the naming of ships work? There is a designs.txt file that contains names for ship designs, but looking at my empire they are not always used (a frigate will have a name from the list, but a colony ship will just be called that). And then there is the shipnames.txt, which contains nothing. So there I could assign specific names to specific types of ships (which is cool, I don't want my passenger ship to be named 'Gargantuan Xeno Slayer XII'). But in the designs.txt you can set per race, and in the shipnames.txt only per role... so how do I give a set of names for a human escort ship?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated :)

And while I'm at it... does anyone have some cool ship names? the current designs.txt contains far too many earth cities to make sense for alien ship designs, but coming up with 100+ awesome sounding and fitting names is difficult, so perhaps we could make it a team effort :)

Ship names are just randomly picked from the design.txt from what I see.Humans use the 0 family design names when looking at that list but they should use 8.

For new ship names just use the SpaceEmpires ones to save time.[:)]

Hey I remember that ship name file! The "Ravager" file inside is by far the best...

I put 2 or 3 years into Space Empires V, including a 15 month PBEM... I loved the detail but it got out of hand in the big games, particularly when it took some screens like the ship list over a minute to open. Also relatively straightforward tactics sometimes required so many intricate orders and there was no margin for error. "You launched your fighters a hex before arriving at the planet, hence your carrier now has no supplies, hence your fleet has zero movement so nothing else happened last turn"!!! [:@]

I loved SEV for a long time but it's amazing how much better Distant Worlds is. Much more stable and optimised, and where SE felt like a collection of list screens, in DW you have the same detail and flexibility but you spend most of your time looking at the galactic map so you retain a much better sense of perspective and situational awareness.

I'd like to see the design.txt file overhauled to list each ship role for each race, so that naming is no longer random.

if you go here: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2467645&mpage=1&key=shipnames%2Etxt

I have created two shipnames.txt files for mods you can use. One uses Royal Navy Historical ship names, the other is an Imperial Japanese Navy version. You can only use one at a time, but if you use this file in a customization folder, each new ship you build will use the next name in the list for that class. However, this does need to be updated to add in carrier names, which I will likely do sometime today.

Ah, great, thanks for the links! It's unfortunate that the ship names are not done they way they should yet, so I'll let them untouched till they get around to patching that :)
