Cheese -> Reputation and conquering independents (12/19/2011 12:49:42 PM)

I've recently encountered an independent, hostile population. I was going to leave them be, but I've colonised another planet in the system which is losing approval because they are impressed by the the independent colony's size and development and the approval penalty keeps growing and will probably cause a growth problem, so I've decided that I'll have to conquer the independent. How much will this damage my reputation, at the starting satisfactory level and how hard will it be to recover?

It will hurt you not to much. The invasion of only one independent colony is no problem for your reputation. Killing some pirates, honoring an alliance will keep up your reputation.

I had a similar situation and bombarded the independent to zero pop and suffered a drop from satisfactory to dubious. If you have plenty of pirates around (which I do) its easy to reclaim the lost rep. Invading shouldn't drop your rep as much as bombarding.

Even for the reputation hit (just one takes you from satisfactory to dubious), it is offset by having the extra population and taxes.

It will only damage your reputation slightly. Destroying one (and a bit) pirate bases will restore it.

Jeeves -> RE: Reputation and conquering independents (12/20/2011 11:16:09 AM)

The reputation hit was four points before the latest patch. It now appears to be seven points. Watch the ancient guardians in the AI diplomacy screen to see what your reputation is worth in points. You need to destroy three or four pirate bases per invaded colony now to keep increasing your reputation. It used to be two. Sigh...

Are you sure about that? Yes it used to be four points for invading an independent but I used to get 3 for a pirate base, well mostly. Didn't think it had changed in the most recent patch, although admittedly only one invasion to go on so far... but that definitely did not cost me seven. I will go back and check my save game to make sure. Are you sure that it wasn't something else additionally causing the penalty? Pirates joining you or something?

I'm still on RotS. It only put me down to dubious which was recovered to satisfactory after a short amount of time, presumably from free trade agreements or some other diplomatic deals.

Gelatinous Cube -> RE: Reputation and conquering independents (12/21/2011 2:16:36 PM)

I like that its been increased. It should be incredibly bad form for the more "friendly" races to just go conquer primitive worlds. I'm sure Earth would appreciate a galactic uproar if we got invaded by Martians. [:D]

jalapen0 -> RE: Reputation and conquering independents (12/21/2011 3:08:05 PM)

I'm not so sure we would be considered a sentient race or just "wildlife". :)

Reputation is not working very well in Legends. You can bombard a good reputation empires colonies to death and exterminate races and your reputation stays at normal levels.

OOPS! I forgot my diplomacy +50% leader bonus, which changes four points to six, and a little roundoff on the total reputation. You seem to be right, looking at the figures from my last three invasions, the base is still 4 point loss from invading an independent, as modified by your empire diplomacy and ambassador diplomacy.

Reputation computing was tweaked in Legends. Which as easy as it was to move it either direction before is probably good that it hardly moves now.

Looking more closely at this I too have made a mistake. Pirate bases get you two points. My suspicion is that the differences of a point that we are seeing are due to a balancing mechanism where reputation slowly drifts back towards zero. When I have a dubious reputation, which is often for most of the early game this is a bonus and later game at noble/herioc it is a deficit. I just had a case where I went from -1 to 0 (dubious to satisfactory as it was) where there was nothing I could put it down to. If you were positively reputed in your original example this could be the explanation (for the 'little roundoff'). All the more reason to remain a little dubious at first. [:)]
