I realize that mines use to completely destroy tanks in SPWaW. Is that realistic? On Steel Panthers I and II (although not on SP III) if a tank had “found” a mine, it would have been immobilized rather than destroyed. I think (and I may be wrong) that what happened on SP I was more realistic: a mine can break a link truck and immobilize it, not completely destroy it. ------------------ Hasta la victoria siempre!

I am not sure what you mean here. In the 4.x versions of SPWAW, a mine may completely destroy a tank but it may just imobilize it also. Perhaps you have had a limited experience with light tanks that can not stand up to mines. ------------------ An old soldier but not yet a faded one. OK, maybe just a bit faded.

El Che, It depends on the type of mine and the method of emplacement. Simple pressure mines are not very likely to blow the tank to bits, but the same mine emplaced with a tilt rod detonator (designed so that the passing of the bow of the tank displaces a rod thus setting off the mine) will probably destroy even a heavy tank. The type mine has a huge influence as well. The japanese liked to use aircraft bombs as mines, and a 500 lb bomb going off under the track of even a modern tank will probably ruin its day.

I made the following experiment: a battle between USSR and Germany in late ’44. I bought a mix of heavy and medium tanks and recon vehicles for both sides. I deployed the Russians in the north and the Germans in the south and I plan a dense mine field in front of each force. Then I start to move the tanks toward the mine fields (wasn’t easy, when the crews new where I was sending them they start to get pinned an try to desert ) Russians: IS-III x 2: one immobilized, one destroyed by mines IS-II x 2: both destroyed by mines T-34/85 x 4: three destroyed, one immobilized by mines T-34M43 x 2: both destroyed by mines B-70 x 6: all destroyed by mines Germans: Tiger II x 2: one breakdown before arrive to the mine field. The other one which arrives to the mine field: destroyed Tiger I x 2: both destroyed by mines Panther x 2: both destroyed by mines Pz IV x 2: one breakdown before arrive, other destroyede by mine Pz III x 2: both destroyed by mines Sdkf x 8: seven destroyed by mine, although one immobilized by mine

Sorry, I forgot the conclusions: Is not a big destroyed by mines ratio for heavy tanks? I mean: IS III were heavy! Tiger II were HEAVY...

Mines, at least the mines I am used to, come in two varieties, Antitank and Antipersonnel. Antitank mines will destroy a modern tank, but a man, at least if he's not too heavily loaded or too big, can step on them without injury. Smaller vehicles, like bakkies or APCs may be blown off the road by them if they;re not mine protected. Antipersonnel mines will severely wound or kill a man, but will only blow off the tyre or tread of a vehicle, and if the vehicle is a heavy tank, may not even do that. The game does not distinguish between types of mines. troopie ------------------ Pamwe Chete

Pure minefields (antitank or anti-infantry only) were rather rare; for the simple reason that they would be too easy to evade or remove... But as far as antitank mines go; they had about ten pounds of HE during the WW II era (barring buried bombs and such like). If that goes off under the tank, it will blow right through the underside armor no matter how heavy the tank. If it goes off under the treads, that's a heck of a shock being transmitted to the crew; they could be rather damaged even if the hull survives (as could other systems; fancy sticking around if the fuel tank ruptures?).
