Stormy Fairweather -> I wasn't sure at first, but performance has decreased since Legends (12/22/2011 11:06:39 AM)

I didn't play Lost Worlds for the three weeks before the expansion, and I didn't even order mine for awhile after release, so I didn't really trust my impressions that the game was running slower after I installed the expansion at first. In ROTS the performance was good until I was in late game with multiple developed empires, but me being the intolerable perfectionist I am quibbled about the performance, relatively certain even now that my second rate computer should be able to run a game like this with no trouble at all. When I learned a performance increase was a part of the expansion I pretty much stopped playing due to the slightly stuttury graphics.

When I installed Legends after having not played ROTS for so long the sense the game was running worse I chalked up to my memory and a false optimism about how my computer compares. Annoyed by the performance I got after my install I did a number of things in an attempt to coax better results. I updated various drivers, tweaked various settings, defragged, ran gamebooster 3, eliminated all none core processes, and tried re-installing legends to a more 'root' directory on my windows partition. Nothing seemed to help; my cpu usage would hardly ever go above 2/3rds usage, and my memory was almost always below 50%, but the game ran poorly, with occasional 'rubber banding' where the game would fall behind itself and input, the fast forward to catch up. These are almost always very small, no more than a second, but combined with graphical stutters, lengthy pauses when opening menus and lag in both the mouse input and view of panning even a modest amount of systems has rendered this nigh unplayable for me. Even with a galaxy of 100 stars (max empires though) I find myself spending more time spent waiting for the game to catch up than playing it

During my reinstall I booted up ROTS to compare versions. It loaded in less than half the time, and while the games performance was disappointing in comparison to what I expect from my computer, it didn't have that rubber banding effect, the mouse felt much more responsive and the fps were unmistakably higher. Certainly playable, even if such things annoy my pretentious ass.

So, either whatever was done to improve the game for most systems has an opposite effect on mine, or there is something either very wrong or very incompatible with my particular computer and this expansion (and considering the ROTS performance compared to my relatively decent specs it might be with the entire game). So, if anyone sees something (possibly silly) I overlooked that explains this so I can fix it and play, awesome, if not than I hope my report and attached dxdiag will be of some help in the future.

Not exactly sure why you are having problems Stormy. Sorry to see that you are as well. [:(]

I've seen nothing but improvement in performance (and memory handling) since Legends. As well as
a number of my fellow testers over various platforms and configurations. Elliot is on vacation
for a least another week, but if you can upload one of your Legends savegames, I'm sure he'll
take a look at it as well as your dxdiag upon his return.

In addition, a couple questions. What antivirus software are you running? Do you have the
Distant Worlds directory listed as an exception in the AV software settings? I've found that
many times this solves any lag issues because many AV software will run quick scans on certain
game files as they open. Just some thoughts in trying to help assist you! [:)]

Both of my save games are from modded games. Would you need the accompanying mod? Also, I run no anti virus. I know how to not get infected, never had one do me a lick of good, and I run periodic scans to ensure I am clean (I always run those helpful pop-up ones). My system runs nothing but my OS when I am trying to get a game running right (convoluted and bloated an OS as windows 7 is).

Yes, you probably should winzip or winrar your theme directory as well. [:)]

Well, I just started a quick game on default, this is a very fresh galaxy, but I already run into quite a delay when zooming into or out of my home system. There is a fair number of planets, ships and mines in the system, but I don't think it should be having so much trouble loading. Not too sure how a save might help, but here one is.

Nope your not alone Stormy

I have tried everything to get DW Legends to perform on my Acer Aspire laptop but i have the same issues as you are experiencing. I also have an issue with sound where it becomes choppy and stops working after a while. I am well within the system specs and addtionally have tried:

Turning off all non core processes while running DW
Disabling Anti Virus
Updating drivers
Running Game Booster
Optimising memory

None of it has worked, after about 5 minutes i get the slowdown, lag and the sound goes. I must add as well that i am playing DW on the lowest settings, with FPS around 25 and nebulas off.

Ive monitored my system performance and DW never uses more than half of resources so i should be seeing better results than this. I can also ALT-TAB with ease and switch programs with ease.

I must say ive stopped playing now as ive lost patience with my laptops performance with this game.

Hi Stormy

Your system specs look fine for playing DW, so no problem there.

In Legends one feature that can affect performance is displaying the colony influence circles. These are shown when zoomed out to sector or galaxy level. You can switch the display to just show the ownership for each system by toggling the map overlay at far right (above mini-map).

Some mods/themes can also quite negatively affect performance if they use large images for ships and bases. Try DW without a theme for comparison.

Some other ways to improve performance: in Game Options screen reduce the Star Density setting. In Advanced Display Settings, turn off "Display nebulae clouds in systems".

Also, if you are using framerate limiting (Game Options > Advanced Display Settings) you should turn this off (Unlimited) - this is only for very old systems that might overheat when utilizing 100% CPU.

Elliot
