sbach2o -> RE: Silvermist unbalanced by expensive tech? (12/27/2011 11:17:15 AM)

It seems I was cosmically lucky in my current game regarding the Silvermist: In the same system where that thing appeared, there was also an abandoned cruiser. I had some trouble with the sequence of events because I first got the Silvermist released, which made it somewhat difficult to direct the explorer to investigate the cruiser without being eaten. I narrowly manged, though, the explorer was barely fast enough to first escape the Silvermist, then reach the cruiser in time. Now that cruiser had all that was needed, except for ion weapons. The important thing was the repair bot, anyway. It ensued a battle where the cruiser inflicted a bit of damage was damaged in turn, ran away to repair, and I had to repeatedly direct it manually to pick up the battle again. All the time my worry was that the Silvermist might head for a neighboring system with big independent colonies. Regarding making it not so much a question of cosmic luck how badly a game will be hit by the Silvermist: The game has special logic to delay the appearance of the Ekurathi (or what they're called). Some similar logic could be applied to the Silvermist. But I am more with Canute (if I interpret you correctly). The earlier the higher the challenge. And it is tough luck if they're triggered by an AI empire in some far off corner of the galaxy and eat the only available Naxxilian colonies or whatever.
