Arcatus -> Beginner to DW modding.. some assistance please... (1/2/2012 3:48:46 PM)

Hello everyone.

The time has come to mod DW, I have tried to seek answers in the guide, but not everything is covered there, so the time has come to seek advice from those wiser than me..

I will keep my newbish questions in this post, hopefully it can be of assistance to others that wish to start modding and run into the same issues...

I have started by modifying an existing race. I immediately ran into problems with the bias file when I tried to make a new one.... I see there are lots of advice and solutions to that problem elsewhere, so I'll make a new race once I have my hands dirty with the basics.

Question 1: How to stop, or limit, race emigrations?

I have tried to adjust race factors (like loyalty and aggression) to limit the emigrations, but it seems like this has no effect.

Currently I am using the "Expanding; N" flag but this has some consequences:
- Influence spheres are tiny
- No population transports at all; not even to own planets. They are built by private sector but not used. Not even to relocate populations.
- No AI Colonization (kinda expected that one though ;))

Is there any other way to limit emigrations?

Question 2: Where do I write background story for (new?) races?

Is this even possible? Is all lore hard-coded into the wiki?

The biggest factor for immigration is probably going to be friendliness. Very unfriendly races would be less likely to migrate or accept immigrants.

You can set your population policy to not accept any otehr races.  But they still accept races fromy our own family I think, so set your race to its own family.

Interesting thing to try would be to create a mechanical race and see if the Ancient Guardians would migrate to your planet.

Emigration, my friends. I am sorry if I was unclear.
Immigration isn't really a problem as foreign races have their uses (muhaha [sm=00000622.gif])

"My" race emigrating away from me is the problem. I really don't like bombing my own race, or, even worse, seeing "my" troops defending a planet!

Probably? Alright, I'll try to set some extreme values and auto everything and see what happens...

Naah, sorry; the Ancient Guardians is flagged as "not expanding", so the population does not move...

The race policy file got very far down the migration factor. Just edit the "my_policy" file to got the lowest possible migration.
For the background you have to edit the core data, the galactopedia. Get a MHTML Editor.

I can't find anything related to migration (other than maybe tourism) in the customization\myMod\policy\MyPolicy.txt. I am on version 1.7.0.6. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks for the info on the galactopidea. That will be fun to edit :)

I edit to much in my game... of course you have to tell the race not the empire...

In the race file on the last part it is:

SpaceportArmorStrengthFactor  ;1.5
KnownStartingGalacticHistoryLocations  ;0
TourismIncomeFactor  ;0.7
FreeTradeIncomeFactor  ;0.5
MigrationFactor  ;0.4
TroopRegenerationFactor  ;0.75

Thanks. I somehow missed that previously.

According to modding guide minimum value is 0.2. So I'll use that for a few auto-games.

For the fun of it I think I'll set friendliness to 50 and loyalty to 150 for a additional few auto-games for comparison (unless someone here knows if this has an effect or not).

Loyalty is combined with the modifier for "breaking treaties" etc. in the race policy. It further indicates if your race will rebel against your empire or joins you as their motherland in a war. The friendliness is combined with the diplomatic statistics of "alliances" etc. in the policy. If these are low but the policies are high they will only value those treaties of good friends to keep and will only give treaties to those they really trust.
