nashvillen -> OT: Red Tails (1/3/2012 3:25:28 PM)

Has anyone watched the trailer for this movie? The CGI of the aerial combat looks great. Looks like another movie about the Tuskegee airmen. Just hope there is more in the movie than just is shown in the trailer.

I hope they don't butcher the physics of flight too much...

Treetop64 -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/3/2012 3:37:27 PM)

Recent George Lucas movie = I have my doubts.

I see tons, tons of incorrect and fantasy markings on the German aircraft. I see History Channel "Dogfights!" physics. I see Terrance Howard.

OK, that last bit was just a jab. I like him, though I thought his acting style wasn't right for Law and Order: LA. At any rate, I desperately hope this movie isn't as bad as my instincts tell me it will be. The Tuskegee Airmen deserve a respectable, no BS movie.

LoBaron -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/3/2012 3:37:57 PM)

The maneuvres performed need waaay more room in reality, the 262 rolls like a 190, the 109 attack
formations got a spacing like on a peacetime demonstration flight, phew.
In general the enviroment is much too dense.

OTOH I like to bash that stuff out of a habit so don΄t trust me. [:D]

Mark VII -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/3/2012 3:44:13 PM)

That's hollyweed for you.

Viewed the trailer this past weekend before "Warhorse". Yes, it has to be the Tuskegee boys and yes, the air enviroment looked way to dense. But will see it as it looks like it could be some good story telling.

Worst thing is, that Hal guy, from the series "Malcom in the Middle" seems to play
an officer.

That reminds me of Al Bundy playing a police officer in a very serious thriller.
*shudder*

Still I will probably go and watch it with purposefully low expectations.

LoBaron -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/3/2012 3:48:07 PM)

Agree, it might be worth for the story alone.

koniu -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/3/2012 3:50:13 PM)

I hope it will not be another move that name shall not be spoken[:D]

Apollo11 -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/3/2012 4:20:04 PM)

Hi all,

The air combat depicted in trailers is another Hollywood style fantasyland... shame... [&:]

My re-post from "THE THREAD!!!" from few weeks ago:

This is getting worse and worse... most likely movie distater of "Pearl Harbor" magnitude that general public would like and we Grognards despise...

LOL... you're right mate. I remember a P-51 with a pair of me109s on its tail...the 51 suddenly simply stops and changes direction like an alien UFO... pure crap

nashvillen -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/3/2012 4:39:58 PM)

Oh, well... I had hopes...

I will still go see it with low expectations, maybe come out impressed. I may just go back to watching movies of fictional comic book stories where reality is left at the door and some good shoot 'em up action replaces it for a period of time.

I guess I am an eternal optimist.. Makes me a good JFB to beat up on! [;)]

I thought I saw P-51Ds, but according to "Dogfights," the Red Tails didn't fly the bubble-canopy model.

That, and blowing up half of the ship with machine guns...[8|]

I once dig up the data for one discussion at "THE THREAD!!!"...

According to my records, this P-51 was the personal mount of 1st Lt Charles White of the 301st Squadron, and was accountable for the destruction of two Bf 109s on the 1st April, 1945. oldman45 -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/4/2012 1:33:32 AM)

The traffic is a little dense but its a hollywood movie, maybe the will do a good job showing the skills of those pilots and how good they really were.

YankeeAirRat -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/4/2012 2:18:27 AM)

I saw this movie back around the begining of December, here is my review of it: Red Tails-Movie Review

Basically I think they had a chance to tell a good story, but to give it more drama they add things which just don't seem logically to have happened in that time frame (the thing that blew my mind was supposedly how a Tuskgee Airman was the lynch pin to Stulag III escape) and the CGI aircraft looked good, but you just couldn't tell the difference between the two or three flying together. They even used CGI for ground scenes, couldn't afford to build (or fund borrowing) a few real P-40's and P-51's for the ground scenes.

nashvillen -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/4/2012 2:32:58 AM)

I will wait and see it at the Sunday afternoon every movie is $4.00 showing. I am just sick, as they now have the technology to properly demonstrate things as they either were or could have been with proper respect for history, logistics, tactics, etc.

Oh, well, so much for that! [:@]

I take it you're not familiar with the TV series "Breaking Bad"? Bryan Cranston may have started out in Malcolm in the Middle, but he's definitely more than just a comedy actor.

Yeah that part is in "Hart's War" with Bruce Willis.

Won't be seeing this one after watching the trailer. Looks like another Hollywood fantasy.

I heard of it, never seen it. But you are right, he has talent for more than a comedy actor, its
probably just me relating him to the character.

He's very likely to be the best thing in an otherwise pretty bad movie.

Yeah, ok, got it, I was wrong. [:D]

Problem is that German/Austrian television gets spammed by 10 different seasons of Malcom in the Middle,
while Breaking Bad plays probably on one channel at 22:00, if at all.
Sadly.

How many months did they have them since V-E day was the first week of May!

SargeantTex -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/5/2012 12:25:47 AM)

Dont worry Hollywood will completely screw it up they only get half of their warmovies right.

YankeeAirRat -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/5/2012 12:53:36 AM)

Offical history has the 332nd FG flying in order the following aircraft
P-40K Warhawks (1943-1944)
P-39Q Aircobras (1944)
P-47D Thunderbolts (1944)
P-51D Mustangs (1944-1945)

castor troy -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/5/2012 8:13:17 AM)

the combat scenes are totally BS, no way I'm even thinking about watching this movie. You don't like "the film that shall not be named"? Then please don't go ahead and watch that one, it's the same Hollywood crap.

What tells you Lucas Films? You could as well watch Starwars and discuss if a x-fighter can do such maneuvers. When you see the Me-262 doing such maneuvers inside the bomber formation then this should be enough to stand up and leave the cinema screaming BS. [:-] The more and more special effects are done with computer programming, the more we get away from realism. The most important thing for public are explosions, a hero and a good looking girl. If you want to watch that film for the story, you're better off reading a book.

LoBaron -> RE: OT: Red Tails (1/5/2012 8:21:41 AM)

Maybe they used Star Wars battle scense as concept for Red Tails ACM... [:D]

That's not very long for a full-length move -- I wonder if Lucas Films even realize there were previous version of the iconic P-51?

I don't think that they bothered much with historical realism... [&:]

And why would they? [8|]

We Grognards make 0.000001% of population - except for us and aviation experts nobody else would notice... it is the same thing as with the "Pearl Harbor" movie... we despised it for total lack of historic accuracy while general public loved it... we (as such niche part of the general population) are insignificant for them (the film makers)...
