In Carinthia (southern part of Austria) lives a notable minority of Slowenians. By Austrian law this minority requires the
place name signs to be bilingual.

The resistance against the bilingual place name signs was so high that it took more than 30 YEARS, a legally not binding plebiscite, hundreds of expert assessments,
an equal number of pro and contra protest marches and therefore an ammount of money I don´t want to even imagine.

Same now with our national anthem.
It has a line containing "Heimat bist du grosser Söhne" (Fatherland [made] of great sons) which they some time decided to
change to "Heimat grosser Söhne, Töchter" (Fatherland of great sons, daughters).
The was a debate over this for whole last year, and now a lawsuit filed by the copyright owners of the "original anthem" pending.

Makes you think theres nothing more important to fuss about.
Every time I read about something like that in the news I am undecided whether to laugh or cry... [8|]

Some idiots never learn.

Back in my college days, I was to accompany a professor from Athens, Georgia, to Columbus, Ohio, for an agriculture conference.  This professor was a native of Buffalo, New York.  So, on the way, I was good-naturedly kidding him about being a Yankee in the Deep South.  I cracked jokes of this kind as we made our way through Georgia, Tennessee, and then Kentucky.

Shortly after crossing the Ohio River and passing through Cincinatti, we were on a rural interstate highway in corn country.  There we saw the biggest Confederate flag I had ever seen at that time* flying above an Ohio farmhouse.  That seemed rather ironic.

*I've now seen a bigger Confederate flag - one flying near Interstate 75 somewhere near Lake City, Florida.

Nice that she claimed it was a "decorative antique." Like putting up an SS poster as an antique. Sigh.
