Roger Neilson II -> Loading SSTs (1/16/2012 7:39:32 PM)

Ok I have two SSTs at an unrestricted port, with an unrestricted infantry unit waiting to be picked up - well some of them anyway. The subs are set to sub transport, they have been both in port and docked - neither seems to have any effect. All I am getting is load fuel and supplies options, the troop load is greyed out.

What am I missing?

Roger

they can only load paratroops, in a large port where you have air superiority.

Thanks for the info...... oh B*****er!

So SSTs are a waste of space then really.

I think that they will load other units but those units need to be in 'move' mode. I agree however, SSTs are a bit of a waste of time - they cannot unload at friendly dot hexes - at first I thought that they would be useful to move some supply around but not really.

I do not know about that.
I'm using 8 SST's (divided into two groups of 4) to supply Johnson Island with supplies, and they are doing so well enough.
Between the SST's and some large flying boats, Johnson Island is kept in good supply, even under constand B24 bombardment.
The dozen or so I-Boats around Johnson Island have picked off a number of allied ships attempting to invade Johnson Island, playing the AI.

Not really. As the Allied player you can only have a maximum of 3 SST, so that isn't much of a reduction to your normal SS fleet. The only real question you have to grapple with is whether the loss of the Argonaut's minelaying capability is worth the conversion. Personally I think it is as you have other naval assets which can take over the minelaying role of the Argonaut but conversely lack alternatives to the Argonaut as a SST.

Use the three SST together and you can move approximately half of a para unit. The unit is loaded in combat mode so you can land and capture an enemy undefended/weakly defended atoll (or dot base) which is beyond para drop range. Then, provided there is a size 1 port, you can shuffle in reinforcements through enemy controlled airspace and sealanes to build up the base.

SSTs are a good weapon against opponents who fail to properly secure their rear. They are in fact a substantial force multiplier.

Alfred
