Nomographs and analogue computers. What fun!

wow, Dili, those circle running torpedos were impressive. I guess that must be historical but I had never heard of those before. Very interesting.

Great vid! A nice way of showing how technology improved training. New pilots were shown how itīs done, the
Japanese did have less of that luxury.

Interesting.

The surviving VT-8 pilot flying a TBF at Midway mentioned that he could launch his torpedo from 200 ft and at 200 kts in his AAR. The other survivors from VT-3 and VT-6 both speak to having to slow to launch speed and descend to launch altitude in their AARs (published at the Battle of Midway Roundtable). Was there some change to the Mk 13 that occurred about this time?

I remember reading that the G3/G4 pilots who attacked the Prince of Wales and Repulse (and who practiced intensively for that specific mission) found that the accuracy of their torpedo launches decreased markedly as their altitude increased. Witness the "famous" photo of the G4Ms attacking off Guadalcanal - those guys got to count the scales on the fish as they passed by. I noticed quite a few of the shots in this video were "porpoising"...altitude seems to be a very important variable to effective torpedo attack...maybe more important than speed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motobomba

It is usually not acknowledged it's success because in Allied reports it is says usually attacks by parachute mines. Contrary to the video - and it can been seen that the ships don't deviate - it is not a good weapon for open sea or armored targets(light charge). It is good for attacks against harbors - with caveat that strong wind can makes them hit land like it happened in one of Gibraltar attack, some ended in Spain.

In 1942, launching at 200 ft and 200 kts was pushing things quite a bit. Recommended height and speed was more like 50 ft and 110 kts.

The video linked in the original post shows the modifications that were made to the Mk 13 torpedo to allow launching from over 2,000 ft and 400 kt. These modifications were in general use by mid 1944.

The improved reliability is shown in the game by the reducing dud rate. I don't know if the game somehow reflects the increased height and speed of launch, which improved the torpedo bomber's survivability quite a bit.

WOODEN SHIPS AND IRON MEN almost.

Technology is wonderful...it's always a chuckle for me when the smuggler shows up at the port of entry and thinks that saying "I didn't mean to come this way. My GPS told me to do it". Works every time to get them off[8|]
