Dejavuproned -> Silver Mist blatant bias against player? (v1.7.0.7) (1/20/2012 4:55:38 AM)

I've noticed, to my frustration, that the Silver Mist is blatantly biased to attacking player targets. They will attack anything player owned far before attacking the AI in any way (unless the AI attacks it first).

For example, in my current game I was trying to take a sector of planets that were not only high value but one has lotus fruit. Problem was that the area was infested with silvermist. The silver mist obliterated every attempt to colonize or even harvest the region resources, now while that was frustrating in of itself it wasn't a huge deal because I figured "well fair is fair if I can't colonize it neither can the AI"... Boy was I wrong!

At first the AI was having some trouble too, they colonized the area but started losing some of the colonies (albeit MUCH slower then I lost any assets in the area). But eventually even as the mist MULTIPLIED the AI just started waltzing in and colonizing the whole damn area, losing MAYBE a colony or two. Meanwhile even planets I tried colonizing some distance away would be annihilated almost immediately by the mist, while the AI in question has thriving planets in the HEART of the area that was supposedly a no mans land.

I've only noticed this pattern in the recent beta patch, but I didn't see anything in the notes aside from the AI being more aggressive against the mist. But it seems to be almost the opposite, they seem to have a live and let live thing going. I can only surmise this is a half-baked "fix" to the AI's inability to handle mist well... But honestly I don't care for it at all, it basically just gives free (and in this case extremely valuable) territory to the AI for a song!

If this is how its gonna be, can we PLEASE have an option to specifically turn of MIST in the game menu, and WITHOUT turning off the other disasters/monsters because I dont have a problem with any of the other events. Just this one.

I just don't like having such a blatant handicap for the AI in the game, its a big pet peeve of mine. If the AI wants that territory they either better be prepared to beat me to it or fight me for it.

First time with silver mist in my game too, and they seem to be beating up the AI too. Just matters where they start it seems, if they start in your territory its not good.

My biggest problem is actually stoping them. Kill dozens of them but they keep coming lol.

I also don't like things like this in games, turns me off totally. Spend most the game dealing with 1 thing the whole time, add in all the pirates and others things and it becomes to overwelming.

So basically when I get the warning for them, I turn the hex editor and God there ass with the erase tool. LOL.

Build 10-20 DD's packed with Ion cannons and put them in a fleet. They will beat the crap out of Silver Mist. Mine are size 400 and pack 4-6 Ion cannons each. Once the Mist is released, I build 2-3 of these fleets and send them to the general area of the release. Usually I will have 1 fleet head straight after them, the others I park at any nearby colonies I might have for protection or reinforcements as needed.

You can always turn space creatures off as well which will remove Silver Mist from the game.

2-3 carrier do the same work, and you still can use the carrier against pirates too.

I think you're just suffering the effects of randomness, OP. In most of my games, the Silvermist spawn deep in enemy territory--which is actually more of a threat, since if the AI fails to contain it then it becomes a very serious problem.

scotten_usa -> RE: Silver Mist blatant bias against player? (v1.7.0.7) (1/20/2012 4:54:10 PM)

In my Legends game, the Silvermist has only destroyed one of my colonies and attacked a few ships.  But I also saw one of them destroy an AI mining base.

I've used Ion Cannons against the Silvermist, but are carriers effective against them too?  And if so, how much?

Kayoz -> RE: Silver Mist blatant bias against player? (v1.7.0.7) (1/21/2012 1:19:32 AM)

I disagree - I have witnessed no "anti-player bias" in Silvermist behaviour.

If you monitor the areas deep in AI controlled territory where Silvermists are released, you'll probably seeing them happily eating AI ships and planets, and drastically stunting AI growth.

Or that's what I saw.

Ion Cannons do the most damage to the Silvermist, but
1. you need to get close to the sivermist with the ship, which is very dangerous until you are faster then the silvermist.
2. Ion Cannon only ships are good against Silvermist, but very useles against others.

Carrier don't kill Silvermist thats fast but much safer. the Cloud of figthers keep the Silvermist busy and kill it.
With Shipsize 300 (450 as Carrier) 3-4 carrier are enough. Don't forget to set carrier to evade.

Good point. It's almost better to have them attack you, the human.

Dejavuproned -> RE: Silver Mist blatant bias against player? (v1.7.0.7) (1/24/2012 3:06:37 AM)

Hmm strange, I swear those events were happening. Is everyone here running the official 1.7.0.6 or the beta 1.7.0.7 in their games?

A little clearity on the situation, it was in neither mine nore the AI's space, it was neutral space with a good abundance of quality colonizable planets, one with lotus fruit. The area was a good distance away from either of our territories. I got there first but due to constant harrasment by the silvermist plaguing the area I was denied colony after colony while the AI was able to swoop in and grab the planets with little harassment. I eventually after hard work did manage to colonize part of the region but never the planet with the lotus fruit, shame.

Was it random chance or not? Hard to say now I guess, maybe it was random but it seemed so overly directed at me it was hard not to notice.

The funny part of this story was in the middle of my later battle with the Shakuri, my empire split and guess which half got all those planets I worked so hard to acquire, lol

I would still prefer that being something you can toggle separately from general space monsters or disasters so you don't have to turn it all off just to not deal with this particular...nuisance

More options are always good right?

Raap -> RE: Silver Mist blatant bias against player? (v1.7.0.7) (1/25/2012 2:19:25 AM)

More options are always good. Still, I must admit to liking the Silvermist. Pretty much the only thing in the game that I deviate from my usual ship design for. Kinda brings a sense of urgency too, if it's close to my colonies. Especially when I haven't even researched Ion weapons yet. Frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing even more 'space monsters', but this time in the form of unique and very powerful ships ala Orion Guardian or similar. Real threats, that is, instead of just the regular bug nuisances. That's why I rather like the Silvermist, ignore it like you ignore the other bugs and you'll soon find yourself regretting it.

scotten_usa -> RE: Silver Mist blatant bias against player? (v1.7.0.7) (1/27/2012 5:41:14 AM)

I just watched 2-3 empires repeatedly colonize the same star system year after year despite there being a Silvermist 'outbreak' in the system.  I finally mustered the fleet to kill them, and the colony ship to quick colonize a planet before the AI empires could.

In the system, I first ran into a 2000 health Silvermist -- the largest I'd seen up to that point.  Then a second 1200 point monster.  I thought the system was clear, but them my fleet auto-attacked a third SM -- a 4000 health beast!  While killing it, a fourth 1100 health one showed up. Then a fifth at 2300, and a sixth at 900.

Moral of the story, I guess:  don't feed the Silvermists!

Colony ship is not necessary till 1.7.0.9

You get a colony for free. However, you might want to consider some troops if you're at war with the race of the colony, as it'll rebel almost immediately. Yay ineffective suppression.
