Northern lights? Or, just the flash of artillery?

A big, ugly picture of the South.

Turn 40 OOB, and the combat losses from my half of the turn.

Another factor in disbanding and merging units, you're driving down the denominator in Guards limit calculation.  Speaking of which, does that go by counters on the map, or is there a unit size consideration that factors in (does 300 Inf Div mean I can have as many Guards Inf Div as 225 Inf Div and 75 Inf Bde?)

That is true that a smaller pool, yields a smaller total of Guards. I intend, as Flavio notes the inevitable necessity, of growing the Soviet army back out. For now, though, it is undergoing a bit of a "pruning" so that the growth is a bit more controlled, and stronger.

According to the manual description, the size of the various guards units factor into the approximate ratio that can be guards at the various breakpoints in the game. Whether it is "linear" is unknown.

How many Guards, and Guards eligible, formations do you have?

On turn 40, I have the following:

45 Guards Rifle Divisions
1 Guards Rifle Brigade
4 Guards Cavalry Corps
1 Guards AT Art Regiment
1 Guards Mtn Division
1 Guards Tank Brigade
8 Guards Sapper Regiments
2 Guards Motorcycle Regiments
11 Guards Lt Rocket Regiments (note, these are always Guards)
17 Guards Artillery Regiments (of various flavors, but mostly RGVK)

So, I am actually getting close to my cap on units, at this stage. I have to admit that Toidi did an admirable job of harvesting Guards. I've got another couple of dozen Combat Units that are ready to flip, with an unknown number of Support Units.

Quite a bunch of "helds" on the south, specially around that thin penetration that will surely keep their forces honest , and yours in the morale way up..

Actually, if you look at the detailed picture, most of those Axis attacks were successful. I just moved back into the hexes to keep a "tar baby" on his units. He gets some relatively easy wins, but ends up wasting his turn with hasty attacks against the various brigades that are sticking to him. Given how far his supply trace is, this leaves his forces with not enough fuel, and thus MPs to make any forward progress.

he stayed in that ...sausage of a penetration after pushing your units? [8|] he must be VERY short of fuel indeed [X(]

Peltonx -> RE: Taking arms against a sea of troubles...(no Mike 29) (2/2/2012 12:45:50 PM)

The lines are not important for him at this stage. Unless he is setting you up for something in June, of which I see two possiblities in the south.

1942 is about pocketing units as the combat ratio blows during 1942 once 1v1=2v1 was removed.

If he cant pocket units every turn to forse you to burn up AP's and keep the ratio above 3 to 1 hes lossing even if he is building up morale and gaining land.
Hes just plain not doing the air war right if hes at 1v1 in losses and probably has not been from the start. My advice to German player follow Katza's tips on the airwar.

Not sure why the guy quit that you took over for, because other then the fact he took some hvyer then normal loses he was in great shape. Mike's forses are not in that great of shape eather for that matter for the spring of 1942.

Game was clearly still in the balance.

Mike needed to get a pocket during the spring to get you off balance some and it does not appear he will be able to.

He needs a pocket withen the first few turns of summer or he will be in trouble and running out of options fast.

JAMiAM,

I noticed that you had no saved APs and you have now patched to 1.05.59c. How are you handling the decrease in Command Capacity for all your Army HQs? Bad timing that the patch came out for you just after March madness.

I am now patched to 1.05.59c, but this turn was played several days ago, using the .53 patch. I am going to have a tough time with getting my Armies under Command Capacity, and it probably won't be until I get the big dump of APs from Voronezh Front, in June, that everything will finally be straightened out. Fortunately, part of my plan, before the changes instituted in .59c, was to run a leaner Soviet Army, due to the overloading of Stavka. Much of my unit merging, and future buildout plans were predicated on this. Though I no longer need to worry about Stavka overloading, I will now have to worry about the Army overloading. So, what I will probably have to do is to build at least another three or four Combined Arms armies, in order to get everyone under Command Cap, and shunt off the excess to the Military Districts (for training) or to Stavka for general (re)distribution.

During my half of the turn, I launched no attacks and only suffered a couple of minor interdictions. Hence, only the OOB shot to track the numbers.
