Are you able to damage your own airfield ? For instance, lets say Darwin will be captured by the Japanese in a few turns, am I able to wreck my own airfield and destroy my supplies so the Japanese can not use them, Thanks.

Sadly not. There is however an increased chance of damage to facilities if you have engineers at a location.

That's to bad....I hate to leave the Japanese an airfield that will punish me.

That's what 4Es are for - start a long-range bombing campaign the first turn after the Japanese capture the base.

Yep, in all likelihood with 2-3 turns of attacks the airfield will be all but useless anyway.

Make sure you recon it too to keep an eye on the base, if it is getting repaired send in another wave to keep the Jabs up to their eyeballs in rubble...

Historically, airfields were extremely difficult to put out of use and required months of continuous bombing campaign to neutralize them. One good example is Rabaul, good explanation in "Fire in the Sky".

I'm seeing that in my pbems - it takes a lot to close an airfield and if my opponents want to keep an airfield open and have enough engineers at the base then I have to go back on a regular basis to keep it out of operation. That is particularly hard when there are multiple bases to close in a small region.

Thus, the best time to close an air base via air bombardment is when it is first captured and when the opposing side is still struggling to get everything back running again.

Lomri -> RE: Destroying own airfield (1/27/2012 5:41:13 PM)

If the base has a garrison requirement, abandoning it will cause partisans to do damage to things such as airfields, air service and ports. So in theory your action (abandoning the base or having low garrison AV) could damage an airstrip.

Thanks for all the advice.....

Alpha77 -> RE: Destroying own airfield (1/27/2012 9:37:17 PM)

Btw: The Japs were very good in repairing airfields...... and they employed mass workers (sometimes prisoners or civilians) for this. Guess the Allies very simmilar good, but with better engineering stuff in place instead of massses of guys.

spence -> RE: Destroying own airfield (1/27/2012 11:31:06 PM)

While an airfield might be difficult to put out of action a port might be a different matter altogether: the equipment to unload ships efficiently and the docking spaces for cargo ships are both quite vulnerable to intentional destruction. IIRC the Germans inflicted serious degradation to Cherbourg (and the ports in Brittany?) but I haven't read about it in quite some time so I can't recall the specifics. It seems to me though that the British Mulberry proved to be much more critical to the Allies supply in France for quite a bit longer than originally intended because the damage to Cherbourg prevented full use of that port for a protracted period.
