First point, I've been on this forum for as long as, and I have to say its a marvellous place. So kind of you all to take a completely off topic issue and devote time and thoughts to it.

Given its a public forum I don't want to put specific dates on here, lets just say maybe it would have been better to do this a little later in the year. May here is always very pleasant, I think i have made a typical mistake in assuming its the same everywhere! The fact the rail opp doesn't run until the last day in May is significant!

Am waiting for more details on the bus tour I posted. I think what I will do is respond by PM to a couple of the posters on here so as not to clog up the forum more and also because then I can be specific about when we will be there.

Really looking forward to this 'trek' across the States, it was a choice between this or a train ride down the Mississippi - iI think this is going to be amazing - but will probably need a holiday afterwards to recover!

Roger

Roger,

With 3 days/nights; Denver is about Colorado and that is about mountains.  If you aren't used to driving in the mountains, go easy.  Colorado Mountains are also about budget, think SWITZERLAND for prices ...  so, Denver itself is just a big city near the mountains, the best part is going into them and that means a car.  Bus tours are ok, but just ok.  The cool thing about driving is you can stop anywhere, anytime.  The highways have lots of scenic pullouts and the little towns have each their own history to share.

First off, Colorado mountains are really high ... 12,000 ft is nothing.  50 peaks in the state over 14,000 ft.  Unless you are there in July/Aug, most of the high country is likely still snow bound.  So you need to be a bit flexible.  Check with the Colorado state website, they will have road status updated daily.

I would suggest picking a location in the mountains to work from, and here are two good, safe choices: Vail or Aspen.  Vail is about 2 hours drive from Denver, Aspen is about 4 hours.  The drives are spectacular.  Aspen is more scenic, so if you can, go there.  In either place, there is plenty to do.  The ski lifts are open to take you up on top of the mountains for great views from on high (easy access for your wife).  In Aspen, take a drive up Castle creek to Ashcroft.  Old little town, with great views.  Then take another drive up Maroon Creek to the Maroon Bells camp ground and lake.  Picnic and enjoy view on par with anything.  The restaraunts and nightlife in both towns are world class.  Bring plenty of euros though ... both are $$$$$.

Problem with Denver is you do need a car, otherwise your choices are very limited.

PROBLEM with this is he's spent his whole life driving on the wrong side of the road! Not the kind of sudden adjustment you want to make when you're out of breath ( flat Denver is already higher in elevation than any place in Britian) in a strange location.

Have a GREAT time Roger the 3rd!

I will have you know sir that its the rest of the world who drive on the wrong side of the road........ Life would be simpler if you all did the same as us!

Actually last time I drove over there I enjoyed it thoroughly, apart from round Miami on those toll roads.

Have a great time, have a safe trip, and bring back some great photos for us to share!!

Public transport is pretty good in Chicago..., but if you don't like toll roads it's not the city to drive in. Empire's right..., lots to see and do in the "Windy City".

RogerJNeilson -> RE: Totally and absolutely off topic - any Denver people here? (4/19/2012 6:42:48 AM)

Thanks as always guys.

My aversion to Miami is due to driving on the toll roads and discovering each 'leg' required a payment in cash - and I was running out of cash......

Ended up turning off onto some backroads and driving fairly rapidly through some 'interesting' neighbourhoods.

The 'joys' of tourism......

Ok we got back home last night. We started off in New York, did Chicago, Denver, train over the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada to San Francisco.

We had the most brilliant holiday and loved so much of the USA.

We also came back with a real sense of the openness, hospitality and friendliness of the people. Above all, having done the Californian Zephyr the sense of awe that comes for the people who carved out that route and also the settlers who walked it..... amazing.

Why am I saying this here? Well I do think its a tribute to this forum the help and friendly advice we were give - and one forum member who took a day off work and drove us round his 'backyard'.

If anyone ever contemplates a trip that gets near where we live then I'd be happy to reciprocate.

Roger

CaptDave -> RE: Totally and absolutely off topic - any Denver people here? (5/11/2012 8:39:13 PM)

Glad you enjoyed your time here, Roger. While my funds have been limited the past couple years, I've traveled extensively in the UK (my goal is to say I've ridden the entire British rail network as it exists at some point in time), and can honestly say the same about the people over there. If you're ever back here and visiting the Northwest, I'll be happy to show you around.

steamboateng -> RE: Totally and absolutely off topic - any Denver people here? (5/11/2012 11:09:32 PM)

+1 CaptDave. The Brits are a geat people. And their rail network shoul be studied by our Dept. of Transportation for a solution to much of our own reckless abuse of ebuse of energy. (besides which, I am an avid railfan.....)

RogerJNeilson -> RE: Totally and absolutely off topic - any Denver people here? (5/12/2012 9:20:12 AM)

The one thing about our own rail network which you don't want anywhere else is the cost. If I want to go to London from home its going to be approximately $1 per mile.... by air its around $.25 per mile.... go figure!

Gregg -> RE: Totally and absolutely off topic - any Denver people here? (5/12/2012 7:08:55 PM)

Cody Museum (Buffalo Bill) on the West side of Denver in the foot hills, big gun collection, Wild West stuff and a great view to the East of Denver.
Golden Colorado, just West of Denver, a very good Railroad Museum and the Coors Brewery.
Denver Mint
