With 3 days/nights; Denver is about Colorado and that is about mountains. If you aren't used to driving in the mountains, go easy. Colorado Mountains are also about budget, think SWITZERLAND for prices ... so, Denver itself is just a big city near the mountains, the best part is going into them and that means a car. Bus tours are ok, but just ok. The cool thing about driving is you can stop anywhere, anytime. The highways have lots of scenic pullouts and the little towns have each their own history to share.
First off, Colorado mountains are really high ... 12,000 ft is nothing. 50 peaks in the state over 14,000 ft. Unless you are there in July/Aug, most of the high country is likely still snow bound. So you need to be a bit flexible. Check with the Colorado state website, they will have road status updated daily.
I would suggest picking a location in the mountains to work from, and here are two good, safe choices: Vail or Aspen. Vail is about 2 hours drive from Denver, Aspen is about 4 hours. The drives are spectacular. Aspen is more scenic, so if you can, go there. In either place, there is plenty to do. The ski lifts are open to take you up on top of the mountains for great views from on high (easy access for your wife). In Aspen, take a drive up Castle creek to Ashcroft. Old little town, with great views. Then take another drive up Maroon Creek to the Maroon Bells camp ground and lake. Picnic and enjoy view on par with anything. The restaraunts and nightlife in both towns are world class. Bring plenty of euros though ... both are $$$$$.
