Yarasala -> 1.7.0.10 Refuel takes precedence over manual commands? (2/4/2012 12:35:38 PM)

I fetched the 1.7.0.10 beta and continued playing my current game.

One thing I noticed just now: I have a single troop transport on the way to attack an enemy planet which is still reachable with the current (very low, in the red) fuel supply. I just want to invade the planet even at the cost of my troop transport. But a short way off the target the ship order changes to refuel and I can't set it back to attack manually, it just reverts to refuel right away. That's not what I want ... [:-] (and as far as I remember that was not so before). Manual orders should always have the highest priority, although a warning in such a case would be in order (if it would be a combat ship or fleet that should attack a space port or such, then arriving there with nearly no fuel would not make much sense - although the player should be able to issue such an order all the same).

No fuel means no weapons. I think in this game fuel includes supplies. So low fuel may mean there is not enough supplies to support the troop invasion. Just a thought.

Yes, but this should still be a decision of the player. If I want to send troop carriers that will run out of fuel the second they drop troops then I should be able to. If I need a bunch of ships to serve as nothing more than meatshields, I should be able to send them regardless of their fuel situation. If the game modeled morale effects on the crew, I could understand them running but not like this.

And if I misjudge and my troop carrier arrives dry and helpless, then it was still my decision to make that gamble and I'm prepared to pay for it (the crew's lives, hurr, hurr). I agree with Awaras and Yarasala that I'd often like to override the AI precautions regarding refueling (and repairs, too).

Otoh, the moment these demands are fulfilled, others will complain that the AI doesn't see after the fuel needs of manually controlled ships. I think you cannot satisfy everyone.

This behavior has been present in all version of Legends that I have played, btw. It isn't new in 1.7.0.10, for all I know. I mostly experienced it with exploration ships, though. I usually have a few of those under tight manual control, because auto-exploration falls extremely short of what you can do manually ;)

I wouldn't call it a bug at all. The game is just a bit lacking in flexibility of manual control.

I wonder if it would be too hard to add an 'ignore fuel restrictions' setting, on a per ship basis?

All it would need to solve this is to add a delay of some amount of game time (1 day, 1 week...) after a ship is given a manual order in which no automatic orders can be given to that ship. If a ship needs to refuel after the player has not given it any orders for a week, THEN it can go refuel itself. Nothing is more frustrating then trying to command a fleet and have your orders ignored after two seconds just because the captains saw a shiny bauble over that way...
