I've had a sub hit uncharted rocks off the Kuriles before as well. Didn't hurt that much though.

At least it wasn't a major combatant- and it's now empty (well, except for the extra ballast it's taking onboard).

Hey, it happens

When your light carrier hits underwater rocks and sinks one turn later - THAT hurt believe me!

Cap Mandrake -> RE: Ouch - who added rocks to the Japanese OOB? (2/12/2012 4:05:08 PM)

I was having this problem too.

The solution is to eliminate all the captains with Italian-sounding names and to make sure everyone understands there are to be no good-looking Moldovan female "crewmen" either.

I rather belive this is a problem with the "greet the tourists on the beaches by showing off" diceroll.
Maybe Michael should have a look into this.

Well by the end of the game, we're pretty much down to rocks and pointy sticks to fight with, you really shouldn't be surprised. [:'(]

Gunner98 -> RE: Ouch - who added rocks to the Japanese OOB? (2/12/2012 5:59:29 PM)

Hay Kid - put down that pointy stick! Don't you know someone could lose an eye! [:D]

Three days after the Harris, another ship an xAP hit rocks as well - only 9 float damage. I guess the Harris rounded off the rocks a bit [8|]. Shish, never seen this before and now I get it twice in a week in the same hex!

Checked for Moldavians - nothing found. [sm=00000030.gif] If I sent all the Italians home I'd be in trouble, just landed the 43rd Infantry Div which I think was recruited in New England...[X(], it might thin the ranks a little...

I had a tow line part on an ARD once. That was a surprise...

spence -> RE: Ouch - who added rocks to the Japanese OOB? (2/12/2012 10:26:51 PM)

Accidents accounted for quite a few losses on both sides. For the IJN Mutsu comes to mind as does Kaga"s striking a coral head just prior the finale in the DEI (and missing the Indian Ocean Raid).

Several US subs were lost (only 40 of the 52 were victims of the IJN) during the war were to uncharted reefs. Several US BBs "found one another" during the war.
Going down to the sea in ships is hazardous - get used to it.

Did it sink?

Dadekster -> RE: Ouch - who added rocks to the Japanese OOB? (2/13/2012 3:51:26 AM)

Wow, now that's kinda funny because the same ship for me sunk after hitting rocks in my last game while unloading. I blamed it on myself since I didn't give the units involved much prep time for planning for it. Seemed pretty darn realistic at the time it happened. :)

Once Had Kaga hit rocks off Truk, put her back to the HI's for nine months of repairs. I cried for a week when I put her in dock, and found she would take 275 days to repair.

No about 15 flotation damage

jmalter -> RE: Ouch - who added rocks to the Japanese OOB? (2/13/2012 10:48:57 AM)

this kinda stuff is good flavor to the game, but doesn't begin to simulate the historical occurences of ships finding a new rock.

& we're also blessed that training losses are often very low, historically the phrase 'one a day at Tampa Bay' wasn't just a slogan, it was a true reflection of airgroup training losses. ops losses to airgroups, esp. those based on carriers or SoPac bases, are also v. low.

while the game may throw you a random damage, just consider yourself lucky that it's not emulating the historical record. 'cos ships ran aground daily, & planes disappeared at a much higher rate than is represented in the game.

Had the Harris moved out of the area? You often get a second auto accident when drivers rubberneck the first one. Maybe they were having a look at the accident site and drifted a little too far to the right.

To be fair those CVEs could sink from anything stronger than a light breeze.

Heh, if you are standing on the starboard side and sneeze they are liable to capsize to port... [:'(]

Cavalry Corp -> RE: Ouch - who added rocks to the Japanese OOB? (2/13/2012 4:06:53 PM)

All nice stuff

I am waiting for someone to report the total loss under repair - its in the manual as something like 0.01%
