Fortress Hainan

Kiungshan.

More engineers and flak are on the way. The 546 fighters are all Oscars, and comprise about 75% of the 1st Air Army :-)

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/6/2013 12:27:46 AM)

Fortress Hainan

Samah.

More engineers and flak are on the way.

The 153 fighters are all Jacks and Georges and the units are stuffed with Golden Boys, of which the IJN has a surplus. These are basically just going to act as a CAP for a cruiser force which will constantly bombard the Indochinese bases. This force has just arrived at Hong Kong for a refuel before starting its work.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/6/2013 12:32:25 AM)

Fortress Hainan

I am moving a lot of stuff which was going to just stay on Formosa to Hainan. This is because I am fairly sure that I can get most of it out if the island becomes untenable.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/6/2013 12:46:24 AM)

Fortress Formosa

Takao is still in a reasonable state despite having being "abandoned". I managed to extract the 49th Division from Korea and the Home Islands to form the basis of the garrison.

The 210 fighters are all Franks, and comprise the part of the 1st Air Army that is not at Kiungshan. Due to the Nakajima Ha-45 problems I am not producing enough of this aircraft to waste it at the front line yet.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/6/2013 12:50:05 AM)

Fortress Formosa

Karenko is coming along quite well. There is a Special Base Force arriving shortly will be sent there to a) add a minimal coastal gun capability and b) get the support number to change from red to white.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/6/2013 12:57:35 AM)

Fortress Formosa

Pescadores has also been "abandoned". It's still functional though.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/8/2013 1:19:43 AM)

06 Feb 1944

I have been sending Fubuki and Mutsuki class DDs into Manado on a nightly basis and will continue to do so as long as I can. He has his own DDs there to protect the transports, which they have done very well. I think I have lost two DDs to none of his with about the same number damaged on both sides.

This is not about destroying his navy, it's more to do with being a persistent nuisance and slowing him down a bit.

In the air we have hiatus while he works out where to bring the big stick(s) next.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/9/2013 1:59:41 AM)

07 Feb 1944

He has moved more destroyers and now also some cruisers to Manado. My raids this turn were very useless and quite costly. Therefore we will desist and wait for his next landing in the area to start fighting again.

Meanwhile over in the Pacific I have spotted some shipping for the first time ever to the east of the Marshall Islands. He has been flying recon over Wake, perhaps he intends to land there? I will not contest it if he does except with the house CD guns.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/9/2013 11:06:06 PM)

08 Feb 1944

Phnom Penh falls.

His air campaign over Mindanao has started, with Sweeps out of Ternate over Dadjangas. P-47s, P-38s and Spitfire VIIIs. I did not think the latter of the three could fly that far but it can indeed do 9 hexes with drop tanks. A bit worrying ...

For some reason my mixed bag of Todgers and Nicks did quite well, with 11 P-47s despatched. Of course we lost a lot more planes but not so many pilots.

Mindanao is the first time he has been confronted with multiple inter-locking airbases which can potentially do him harm when he lands at the next place. I am very interested to see how he approaches this.

Richard III -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/10/2013 12:18:30 AM)

If any of my Games as the Empire have maps like that when I hit Feb. 1944 I will be quite happy....[8D]

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/10/2013 12:59:56 AM)

Well I don't know. He is way ahead of the historical timetable in terms of territorial gains, and the score is now showing an Allied Minor Victory.

Assuming he wraps up the DEI in another month or so I will only have enough fuel to last for one more year with industry going at full whack. Then it's poverty time ...

What I have not allowed to happen is the attrition of the IJN at a far remove as per Midway/Guadalcanal etc. This may give me options if and when he goes for total annihilation.

When you have a chance again it would be great to see an economic update. Interested in how much you have stored away.

Here you go.

obvert -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/10/2013 2:27:33 PM)

Your fuel and oil look pretty good, but I guess if you're not going to get much more out you'll need it all to get deeper into 45. I've begun lamenting my fuel and oil situation. Not the best, but I'll keep trying to get more back.

All of the rest seems like you're setting yourself up well. You might get to around 3 million HI by the end of 44, which is my goal. Your armaments and vehicles polls are really healthy. Supply looks a bit tight. I'm trying to build mine up more as there will still be a lot of factories that need changing over when new airframes come online.

This will be a fun year to see how the Hive reacts when challenged. [:)]

Cribtop -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/10/2013 3:17:41 PM)

Are those the Empire wide stats? How much of that fuel and oil are in the Home Islands.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/10/2013 3:23:29 PM)

I would be very surprised if HI gets to 3m. More like 2.5m tops.

The main thing is to be able to produce out the Naval Shipyards and then basically turn them off by the end of August.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/10/2013 3:25:03 PM)

Hi cribtop,

Yes it's Empire wide. I would guess that I have about 2m fuel outside the HI, mostly at Hong Kong and Manila. Oil is mostly already back home.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/10/2013 5:42:44 PM)

Engine troubles

Alongside the Nakajima Ha-45 issues I am now suffering from a lack of Mitsubishi Ha-32s, which power things like the Jack, Emily and B6N2 Jill.

The Engines screen shows just how badly I have done with this side of things.

[image]local://upfiles/11369/5D76D427F8924191AE093D3A461EBE0D.jpg[/image]

obvert -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/10/2013 6:11:17 PM)

You might look ahead to the research you have going, count the planes you'll have for each engine in 6 months, and start building new factories now. not a complete disaster, but it does take time to work out. I had to do this around the same time, but luckily never got below 150 in any pool, (not because I was keeping good track, but just got lucky there and caught the deficiencies soon enough).

Sangeli -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/10/2013 11:03:09 PM)

I've spent a while lurking in your AAR and I'm wondering if it might be a good move for you to attack the USSR before August 1945. You could get some extra oil and fuel which could be very benificial. But also by fighting on your terms you can avoid a situation later on when you are being pressed hard by the US in the Hive and the USSR in 1945. You could assemble a large army, strike a decisive blow against the Soviets in summer 1944 and then redeploy them to the Hive in the start of 1945. Sort of like how Germany tried to strike first against France in WWI before they could bring their army to bear (although of course that didn't work out well). It's a risky strategy but if you are able to pull it off (say by surprise landings in the Soviet Far East) you could end up destroying a good portion of the Soviet army that could be brought to bear later on.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/10/2013 11:17:21 PM)

If there was a time to attack the Soviets it was on Dec 7 1941. I have no air to deploy against them whatsoever and I have stripped most of the arty and flak out of Kwantung.

Obviously come August 1945 I will be faced with a bit of a problem. Should be fun :-)

In August 45 everything for Japan is a problem. [;)]

It would also cost you hundreds of thousands in supply to basically let the Allies open another front and get access to a fairly massive air force right next to japan and another small navy with bases also right next to japan. Very bad.

In rader's 'Taming the Bear' game against Jzanes he took out the Soviets in 42-43 and did very well into 45, but still the Allies pushed slowly ahead and got the slow grinding win.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/11/2013 1:22:07 AM)

Yes I really don't think partying in Vladivostok is on the agenda at this point. The cost-benefit analysis is massively negative as you say.

There are other possibilities for the late game though. One such is Operation Bouvet.

Sangeli -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (8/11/2013 2:36:51 AM)

Not a JFB so I don't know what I'd do in your situation but I've always been of the opinion that if you're going to get into a fight, always best to start it on your terms and set the pace. But ya at this point probably too late to do anything except sit back and wait for the Red army...
