Liuchow is still his forward airbase in China. I have been trying to bomb it at night with Nells from Formosa, and this turn they finally took off. Quite good results IMO.

I would agree ... those would be good results for me as well.

PaxMondo -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (2/7/2014 7:23:34 AM)

Not sure of your HR's, but with the fall of HK imminent, I would start thinking about retracting your perimeter. HK->Tokyo is 37 hexes ... to Osaka 33 ... Once he has HK, its better than owning the Marianas for the allies as it can be a AF9 for his 4E's. As the allies, I wouldn't even care about the Marianas any more ... I've essentially bypassed them for a better base ... Formosa would be my next target if I were the allies ... Just me though ... no idea how your opponent will see things.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (2/7/2014 11:29:35 AM)

I'm not sure that the fall of HK is imminent. Besides which he already has Canton.

That said, I am withdrawing from the more remote areas in China and Manchuria, but not in the Pacific.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (2/8/2014 11:47:30 AM)

30 July 1944

Target Rabaul.

I managed to sneak the full 10 CV, 25 ship KB to within 6 hexes of Rabaul, where they pulled off a perfectly co-ordinated port/airfield attack. However the results were quite disappointing. I lost 170 planes, and possibly because of the Severe Storms weather did not annihilate the shipping at the port in quite the way I had wanted.

Still, no harm done. The carriers will head for home un-touched and I have plenty of planes and pilots to re-build the airgroups.

Well done. Weather can mess up the best laid plans, unfortunately. Still, deep strikes and surprises often have a strong impact on conservative players, so perhaps this will cause a misallocation of resources by the Allies.

This was a very quiet turn. The KB has now fuelled from AOs at Truk and will head for pastures new.

I have been reinforcing some of the rearward Chinese cities. Here as an example is Nanking.

Really? The strike you posted could not have had much more than 40 planes shot down. Where did the other 130 planes get lost?

That wasn't the only strike. I try to only post combat reports that are material.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (2/11/2014 12:30:35 AM)

02 August 1944

Not much going on. Ponape gets bombed, as it has every single day for a long time now. I keep the small garrison alive by sub transport of supplies. He could take the base very easily but does not seem interested.

Meanwhile, over on the Asian mainland Operation Squelch is progressing well. The enemy has seemingly not detected our intentions at all, and will be hard pushed to react anyway given his dispositions.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (2/11/2014 12:57:58 AM)

The "Unassailable CAP".

This agglomeration of fighters (combined with the serious engineering and flak at the base) is his #1 problem right now. It complete stops him doing Naval Attack anywhere in the vicinity which allows me to ship stuff around at will. He will also given his nature be very reluctant to place shipping anywhere nearby since I have demonstrated more than once how deadly 250kg bombs can be when delivered by fighters at low level.

[image]local://upfiles/11369/49D7D3F6BB7A46DA855223C06FC75980.jpg[/image]

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (2/11/2014 1:08:55 AM)

Of course any amount of fighters and flak cannot prevent Naval Bombardments. So it is necessary to keep surface combat TFs at the base to prevent or at least minimise this risk.

Here are some of the current defenders. Not very fearsome, but they have also done sterling service depositing and withdrawing the harassment forces on the mainland.

The main thing that prevents Kiungshan from being nuked from the sea is its location "behind" the Hainan island land mass. Ships coming from Cam Ranh Bay cannot get into bombardment position without exposing themselves to air attack first.

I'm kind of in the opposite camp. I want more! To study and learn from these games it is great to see some details.

I probably post too many CR, but it's fun for me to go through them, as I see more stuff that happened, plus with an opponent's AAR going, I just like knowing the info is out there for people to compare and assess. Helps the commentary I think, and keeps me objective.

Which brings me to my point about this AAR. I'd love to see a bit more, understand your situation better as it's such a unique strategy, and so well carried out thus far. At least some maps would be really good. No need to annotate then, just situation shots more regularly.

You're going to learn to love that ugly plane if you put these great pilots in it. Best in a defensive role.

Looks like you're really slowing efforts everywhere even though he hasn't hit the edge of the Hive anywhere. That bodes well.

Love the Sonia use in mid-44.

Captain Cruft -> RE: The Hive - Cruft PBEM (2/14/2014 12:12:42 AM)

I don't spelling things out, but here are some more clues.

The hex which the arrow is pointing to is the only way in to or out of Hong Kong.

I can bomb that hex with about 3,000 planes, uncontested.

The unit moving towards Hong Kong is a single Tank Regt, but I have over 1,000 AV of infantry on its way to the hex from Swatow.
