dbmsts -> CVEs can't transport groups (2/25/2012 3:09:25 AM)

I tried forming an air transport TF using the Long Island CVE and its clones (I made a mod), but when I want to load an airgroup it shows in front of the group, in the loading screen, "No Ship Free". I even tried a transport TF with these CVEs but it couldn't load any airgroup.

It is the third day in my modified campaign. I thought that CVEs without airgroups could transport aircraft.

CVEs can only transport fighters and single engine bombers. AKVs can transport all aircraft types with no damage, though they need to be offloaded at a port. They can't be flown off.

The TFs that I previously formed included AKVs in them that's how I could get to the load troops screen. But now I tried both an air transport TF and a transport TF with a single long island class CVE, but the load troops option is greyed out.

Go to the air units screen and click on transfer to ship and the CVE should show up.

This, CVE's are a little different in that you have to fly the air unit onto it. Also to be sure that the air unit isn't restricted command.

Thanks, the transfer to docked ship works.

Transferring to a docked ship may not be the best way to load an airgroup on a CVE, since the planes will all be damaged when they load. If you undock the the ship first, the planes will land on the ship undamaged. But you can only land carrier capable aircraft on an undocked carrier. Land based aircraft must be transferred to a docked ship.

Thanks for the info. No wonder the three squadrons of Army Airforce fighters were all appearing as damaged on the CVEs.

You should be able to fly single engine fighters off a CVE though- have you tried undocking the CVE's the next turn and checking if the squadrons can transfer to base - i.e. fly to somewhere else from the CVE's?

Yes, you can fly any single engine fighter off of any carrier-and I think the P38 but don't quote me on that one. You just can not land non carrier capable aircraft. Don't worry too much about loading from the dock. Any damaged planes will be repaired and back in action in a couple of days. Only a problem if you need them for action right away.

Hi, good pic.

Right now I've got three land-based single-engined P-40s and P-39s on 3 CVEs in transit, all damaged. So can't fly them anywhere. In any case if I can't land land-based fighters on a CVE in the first place, then the only way they can transfer to an escort carrier is through the docked ship method and in that process they get damaged. I'm sure carrier capable aircraft are able to fly in and fly out, but haven't tried so far.

I've noticed that land-based figthers once on a CVE start repairing pretty fast. So maybe you're right even land-based aircraft can fly-off a CVE (once repaired), but I still haven't got the chance to check that.

geofflambert -> RE: CVEs can't transport groups (2/27/2012 5:50:21 PM)

I believe planes loaded on AKs are not necessarily really damaged but rather disassembled.  They have to be unloaded at a port and then reassembled.  Don't know about AKVs or CVEs.
