Noble713 -> Preventing Escort Mission for AI-controlled Ships? (2/27/2012 5:35:00 PM)

The Galactopedia implies that there are different methods of employment for the various ship classes, yet in my experience the AI is all too happy to send my cruisers and destroyers off to escort any and every measly freighter regardless of how many escorts or frigates I field. Is there any way to "turn off" the escorting of ships, so my AI-controlled vessels only conduct Patrol missions? The only alternative I've come up with is creating named fleets for each system and assigning all my new construction to these right after ordering them, but as your empire grows this becomes tedious and unmanageable.

My rationale: I've covered it in older posts, but I'll reiterate: ships are almost never attacked/intercepted in transit. Pirate attacks and enemy forces invariably strike within your systems at fixed targets like mining stations. Every ship that is out babysitting a freighter through deep space is a ship that is not in position to defend my intra-system assets. At any given time I wouldn't be surprised if this sucks away 50% of my combat power. On top of that, all that flying around burns fuel too.

Good point, Nobel! It would make more sense to garrison all the travel endpoints rather than the pathing. Although mining ships would still need escorts.

You dont want Escort missions, then you shouldn't build Escort/Frigatte ship class ships.
Don't forget the class setup the role of the ship not the size of it.

Design the same ships as Capitals if you want more system defence, doesn't matter if they are just 200 size.

If you wan't Garrisons, you need to create fleet and set their range to system.

I've scrapped all of my Escorts in previous games and when I build new Cruisers most of them automatically go on Escort missions. It's as if the ship control AI will ignore classifications and employ any combat vessel to fulfill what it considers to be a pressing need.

Noble is correct, the AI will use Cruisers and Destroyers for escorting if it wants to.

I would of thought that forming them into small defence fleets would make more sense than leaving a ship on AI control on it's own anyway. A single ship is far more likely to be either heavily damaged or destroyed if an invasion force lands on your doorstep than a fleet will be. It is a simple matter of bringing enough firepower to the task.

To my mind there are no reasons in a full space empire why any force would have single vessel patrols for combat duty, even in the current times military forces do not send out lone destroyers to patrol dangerous areas, they are backed up to cover other outcomes. A single vessel should only be either an escort or a recon patrol, so it makes the AI make perfect use of them.

may be you have too many military ships. others have done the patrol mission. so the left do the escort mission.
