Noble713 -> Preventing Escort Mission for AI-controlled Ships? (2/27/2012 5:35:00 PM)

The Galactopedia implies that there are different methods of employment for the various ship classes, yet in my experience the AI is all too happy to send my cruisers and destroyers off to escort any and every measly freighter regardless of how many escorts or frigates I field. Is there any way to "turn off" the escorting of ships, so my AI-controlled vessels only conduct Patrol missions? The only alternative I've come up with is creating named fleets for each system and assigning all my new construction to these right after ordering them, but as your empire grows this becomes tedious and unmanageable. My rationale: I've covered it in older posts, but I'll reiterate: ships are almost never attacked/intercepted in transit. Pirate attacks and enemy forces invariably strike within your systems at fixed targets like mining stations. Every ship that is out babysitting a freighter through deep space is a ship that is not in position to defend my intra-system assets. At any given time I wouldn't be surprised if this sucks away 50% of my combat power. On top of that, all that flying around burns fuel too.
