Tampa_Gamer -> [REL] Sound Effects Mod (3/1/2012 3:16:20 AM)

(Now updated for DW: Universe as of 2/6/2015)

This is the sound effects portion from my personal mod.

From the readme...

Tampa_Gamer Sounds Effects Mod v1.02
Distant Worlds (Universe) version 1.9.5.10
February 6, 2015

========================================================================
INTRODUCTION
========================================================================

The sound system in Distant Worlds (Universe) separates sounds into two groups - Music and Sound Effects. There are already several good music mods at this point (as well as several good sound effect mods), but music is not the focus of this mod. As of this date, there are 92 .mp3 and .wav files in the default \Sounds\Effects subdirectory. This mod reflects my personal tastes and replaces 53 of those sounds with my own which I have either (1) created with bits/pieces of other sounds collected on the web, (2) used in my prior released sound mods for SE4/5, UFO-AS and UFO-AL mods, or (3) borrowed from my collection of sounds kept over several decades of strategy games (you may recognize some of them from space themed games in the past). Since the sounds are reloaded each time the game is started, it is fairly easy to test/revise the sounds without ruining a saved game or even mix/match these sounds with other sound mods to suite your personal taste.

========================================================================
INSTALLATION/REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS
========================================================================

Previous versions of Distant Worlds required this mod to overwrite the original \Sounds\Effects files because placing them in a the Customization\[Your Theme]\Sounds\Effects would not do anything. Now with Distant Worlds (Universe) you can simply unzip these files to your person theme folder to use them without the necessity of overwriting any original files. They should be placed in the following subfolder in your theme:

"[Distant Worlds install folder]\Customization\[Your Theme]\Sounds\Effects"

To uninstall, simply delete the above subfolder containing these sounds.

========================================================================

VERSION HISTORY
========================================================================

v1.02 (2/6/2015) Universe release version (53 sounds):
+ deleted previously included default files no longer needed to "undo" the installation as we no longer need to overwrite the default files as part of the installation process.
+ modified instructions for use in Universe expansion
+ replaced attack_click.wav
+ replaced laser.wav to contain multiple laser sounds to better reflect fighter combat with multiple fighters in squadron (experimental). Unfortunately, there is no separate sound for fighters, so we are forced to modify the maxos blaster (default) sound as well. However, I am liking it so far as I think it adds to the general combat sound scenery so I am including it to solicit feedback.
+ added new grid.wav
+ added/replaced (2) button, (5) construction, (3) gas mining and (2) hyper sounds with "softer"
versions of the ones contained in the last version and/or default version

v1.01 (8/23/2013) Shadows release version, replaced:
+ areagravitonpulse.wav
+ attack_click.wav
+ planetExplosion.wav
+ assaultpod.wav
+ resonantgravitonbeam.wav
+ tractorbeam.wav
+ highpowertractorbeam.wav
+ gravitonbeam.wav
+ message_Alarm.wav

v1.00 (02/29/2012) initial release version
+ replaced 40 sound effects with new ones.

Reaaaaally great mod. These sounds are superiour in every way. I hear you used some moo2 sounds too :D

Especially like the laser sounds - really powerful.

This. Is. Epic. [&o]

msnevil -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (3/2/2012 10:37:53 AM)

I always like your SEIV sound mod, thanks for posting your mod to this forum!

I wonder if there is other past SE users here as well?

tjhkkr -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (3/2/2012 3:43:35 PM)

Thank you

Tampa_Gamer -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (3/3/2012 2:02:46 PM)

Thanks [&o] - in particular, I have tried to replace and reduce the volume on various mining sounds which always jarred me out of my seat when playing default - so if anyone thinks a particular sound needs adjusted volume-wise, etc. I am all ears.

TomFrame -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (3/4/2012 10:47:35 PM)

Really great work - played some games now with the mod, and I have to say that you have boosted my experience.

Directly speaking that is.

Fishers of Men -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (3/5/2012 3:07:33 PM)

The weapon and explosion sounds are really good. I can clearly tell when each type of weapon is being fired, and the resulting damage.

Shark7 -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (3/5/2012 4:13:30 PM)

I will likely try and use your weapons sounds, etc. However, I am sticking with my null sound for the alarm...that thing just goes off too often and any sound with it gets gratingly annoying fast.

tjhkkr -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (3/5/2012 8:22:49 PM)

I took a listen; there are a couple of real nice ones in here. Thank you!

Baleur -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (4/6/2012 2:08:41 AM)

Amazing sounds.... I love them :)

Mac Linehan -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (4/14/2012 6:51:11 PM)

Tampa_Gamer -

Thank You for this Mod! I still have your mods for UFO Aftershock, am glad that you are still around.

Mac

MisterBenn -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (6/2/2012 1:48:39 AM)

Hi Tampa_Gamer, yes I also remember your name from a mod from a previous game I used to play, which one precisely escapes me right now! I've just been playing with these sounds and they are excellent! The construction and mining sounds are really satisfying and the comm sound when other races message you is familiar to me although I can't place it. I will roll the log message noise over the alarm noise as I also find that too harsh and frequent as it is. Thanks very much for this.

unclean -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (6/16/2012 3:18:36 AM)

Really good work on this! I tried it out because the default alarm sound was driving me insane, but all the other changes are great too. Like how the weapon sounds went from literally "pew pew" to actually sounding cool.

Tampa_Gamer -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (8/24/2013 3:36:43 AM)

FYI, I just posted my current version in the first post above. Please let me know if anyone has any problems downloading, etc. Thanks!

Yskonyn -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (8/24/2013 11:39:05 AM)

Still my sound mod of choice. Very nice!

Fishers of Men -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (8/24/2013 3:37:56 PM)

I was using your original version, so thanks for the upgrade.

Buio -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (9/29/2013 3:42:08 PM)

Thanks for the updated Shadows version! Good stuff.

Silaith -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (3/8/2014 7:41:31 AM)

Thanks you, it sounds great ahah!

Travic -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (3/11/2014 4:59:01 PM)

What's laser4.wav from? It sounds familiar.

Great pack by the way.

Brone -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (5/25/2014 4:18:11 AM)

This mod should be on the first page of the modding forum [:)]

Unless it needs to be updated...a new expansion did just come out...

Ranbir -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (5/28/2014 12:16:31 PM)

Well the expansion allows themes to have sound effects.

Tampa_Gamer -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (5/28/2014 4:08:54 PM)

It should be fully compatible as it stands now, just drop the sounds\effects folder directly into your personal theme folder along with any other mods you are using. There is no longer a need to overwrite any of the original sound files as described above. If you have other mods that modify the sound files that you want to take priority, then just drop this one first and then install the other mods. As long as you allow "overwrite of files" when it pops up, then it will automatically replace the needed sound files and you will have effectively merged the two mods.

I do plan to update this mod and the instructions (as well as my other 3 mods) to reflect the latest snapshot from my personal mod folder. Over the past 6 months I have played a number of games and tweaked the sounds further based on testing, forum feedback, personal taste, etc. However, I happen to have a challenging 1.9.0.13 Shadows game that I am finishing up and its chewing all my available gaming time, so it may be a week or so before the update is completed.

Any chance you will still update?

Tampa_Gamer -> RE: [REL] Sound Effects Mod (8/16/2014 9:06:09 PM)

Yes, its just a matter of finding some time to get to it. The latter part of this summer has been a very challenging one for my family so real life priorities came into play. Hopefully once school starts and things settle down with my kids over the next few weeks I will have a chance to sink my teeth into the latest patch with a new game and post an update. In the meantime, it does work fine with Universe with the instructions I mentioned above.
