Boygor -> Moo2 type of game - questions :) (3/3/2012 7:34:09 PM)

Hi all,

I found this game on a release schedule for retail UK PC releases the other day and thought this sounds like just my cup of tea!

Consider my surprise when I check the website and there are 2 expansions out already.

I have a few queries about the game if anyone could answer me?

1) Is this like Moo2?
2) Is there a bundle version of the game available (i.e. vanilla + all expansions)?
3) If a bundle is available can it be downloaded in English?

If someone could answer these i'd be very grateful!

Kind Regards

Boygor

1. Its real time strategy with controllable pause. Its quite different but the complexity and depth near MOO2))
2. There was one)) dont know if its still available.
3. Sure.

Shadow Tiger -> RE: Moo2 type of game - questions :) (3/3/2012 9:39:07 PM)

1. Not a clue, I missed the MOO2 band wagon.
2. There was a deal back before the new year, but I missed that myself. Just bought the game a couple weeks ago myself and there was a discount for buying the game and both expansions together.
3. Downloaded my copy and was playing right away.

Not at all like MOO2. As far as game quality MOO2 is still the best imo.
Still if you like MOO2 you may like this. But it is different. Similar theme; different game. But really why would you want to play something like MOO2 when you could just play MOO2?

Other questions already answered.

I also want to play something like MoO2 and I don't want to play MoO2 (at least not at this time). MoO2 is in a special place of my heart and I will never be able to thank enough to Microprose and Simtex for the extraordinary experiences they provided me. Playing it now would be more of a nostalgia experience than anything else. At least this is the way I think about it, although I would not be surprised that many 4X game veterans still play it because it is really something special.

So, I think the op's questions are Very relevant. If DW is "like Master of Orion"? In many aspects yes, in many no. DW is not turn-based, has a light colony management system (building stuff at planets is very limited) and is not as simple and elegant as Master of Orion II. On the other hand DW offers a deeper experience which at places feels like a simulation of what real life exploration and colonization could be. In other words DW feels more real while MoO2 feels more imaginary. DW is therefore more realistic and MoO2 more abstract.

In conclusion I think MoO2 was the space 4X reference of the XX century. DW is the new reference, of the early XXI century. Neither is better because it's almost absurd to make a direct comparison between the two. I love both.

I agree with every bit in your reply, adamsolo...well put [sm=00000436.gif]

Shark7 -> RE: Moo2 type of game - questions :) (3/5/2012 4:24:27 PM)

As a MoO fan, all I can tell you is that I love DW. So take that for what it is worth.

They are not the same game, nor should they be. And just because you love one does not mean you have to hate the other.

Morelyn -> RE: Moo2 type of game - questions :) (3/5/2012 4:36:24 PM)

I'm a bit surprised to see all this MoO2 love. When MoO2 first came out, it was hated by many (most?) for not being MoO1. It was called SimFarm in Space (and worse) for not having the economy sliders of MoO1. I liked it, but I felt distinctly in the minority at the time.

I guess time heals all wounds. [:)]

Raap -> RE: Moo2 type of game - questions :) (3/5/2012 5:03:27 PM)

Well, it did have workers/population which you could move around and which effectively worked like the sliders in the first game. It also had better atmosphere/music as well as more cool weapons/equipment and the addition of actual buildings. I wouldn't say it was a huge improvement, but generally it was a better game I'd say. They were different enough that it's worth trying both though.

Personally I think the third game is the best MoO though, it just needed the mod packs which came years after release( Chocolate or Strawberry). Away went the micromanagement from the previous games and in came macromanagment and the feeling of actually controlling an interstellar Empire. Whereas I finish a game of MoO/MoO2 in a few hours and have a decent amount of fun, MoO3 can keep me occupied for weeks with a single huge-map game.

MoO2 was the subject of this thread but if I love MoO2 then MoO was my first love. I can't remember which I played more and had more fun with but one thing's for certain, you never forget your first love ;)

ASHBERY76 -> RE: Moo2 type of game - questions :) (3/5/2012 5:45:47 PM)

DW plays like a lite Paradox game in space because of its real time nature which means the game mechanics are not in the same style.I still like MOO2 but it has been surpassed in every area by newer games but maybe not in the whole overall package.I had hoped SOTS2 would be the MOO killer but it's still unfinished.

I never played MoO3. I was playing something else at the time it came out, and then when I finally got around to considering it there were so many bad reviews that I shied away. You're still one of the few people I've seen who has a good word for it. It's good, huh?

Just looked for the Chocolate mod in case I decided to play it, but all the links are either broken or pointing to invalid archives...

Raap -> RE: Moo2 type of game - questions :) (3/5/2012 11:30:44 PM)

Yeah, it's unfortunately getting harder and harder to find the mod packs. Latest link for chocolate is this: http://www.mediafire.com/?u6jr6e037dv5ns6

Don't go in expecting MoO1/2 though, it's a very different game, definitely not for everyone, and it takes a few hours getting used to. It rewards long-term planning more than anything else.

jpwrunyan -> RE: Moo2 type of game - questions :) (3/6/2012 10:55:58 AM)

Well, I still play MOO2. It is still the best game of its kind that I have found. Free Orion is the only thing I can think of that might replace it but last I checked its going nowhere. Assuming Free Orion were a functional game I would recommend that as a game "like MOO2".

RedArgo -> RE: Moo2 type of game - questions :) (3/7/2012 4:25:47 PM)

I like DW, but like others have said, other than the general genre, it really isn't like MOO2.

If Armada 2526 had ship design and good tactical combat, I'd say that would be the closest to a modern MOO2 that I've played. Unfortunately, it doesn't have either of those things, but it is still a good game without them.

I agree.

Also agree. Currently, Armada 2526 is the only recent 4x game I enjoy more than DW.

I imagine it won't be unfinished for much longer, the patch lists are become more and more promising, the game more and more polished. I haven't played it completely in depth, haven't had much time to, but it will take its place among the elite of 4Xs.

As far as the OP. I've played just about every 4X game. There isn't too much similiarity, but I think DW has a better endgame than MOO2, especially with the expansions. I also love the fact that every ship is present and active (though my CPU sure don't) It's a worthy game, give it a try.

Rising-Sun -> RE: Moo2 type of game - questions :) (3/15/2012 10:23:51 AM)

The only problems with this game compare to Distant Worlds, that the ship classes and capacity arent set up properly. In Distant Worlds there should be researching different kind of ship classes from escorts, destroyers, etcs all the way to heavier models. Each models can hold up certain spaces while bigger warships can have much more. So the scale in this game doesnt add up, imagine a frigate that have up 400 spaces and doesnt change the frigate's size. Adding so much to that ship would become more or higher class.

And the research trees is fairly small :(
