8 September 1942 SOPAC 2 SAGS with orders to bombard Efate glide in under a moonless night to be met by 2 squadrons of IJN DDs. By the time North Carolina and her consorts line up to bombard the target half of the opposing DDs are burning or sinking, given the fact radar didn't play a part in detecting the enemy TFs and a near moonless night to boot I think the Allies dodged a bullet here. Daylight comes and there's heart stopping moment as the BB is still anchored off Efate, fortunately the skies are clear and the Allied TFs retreat to Noumea in good order with a half dozen ships damaged to varying degrees but no losses sustained by the Allies. A good day at the office.
