Looking to buy (if there's a decent one out there) a more tactical-level naval sim.

I've got Harpoon in all it's forms, and WItP-AE, but I want to be in the fire-control room, so to speak.

Thoughts?

I always wished someone would re-do the Great Naval Battles of the North Atlantic series. Great fun - strategic and tactical.

Does anyone have "Steam and Iron" yet?

Naval Warfare Sims Steam and Iron - an absolutely brilliant pc game on WW1 naval combat. Game models fog of war and command limitations and it is best played in the admiral role but if you want you can set it up so you can command each individual ship. There are very few pc wargames (or board war games) that approach the brilliance of this design. The British BCs have an unnerving tendency of 'blowing up' and you'll be cursing the decision to put more speed rather than armor in those ships.

Played a scenario controlling Hipper's Scarborough raid of the English coast in 1914. In that scenario you do not know whether the High Seas Fleet will withdraw (as historically they did) or back you up in the face of the responding RN battlecruisers and dreadnought. In poor visibility you may run unawares into a superior force.

Really the only downside the game has is that it is 1 player only - however the AI is very good so that's not as much a negative as would appear at first.

My recommendation - buy it, buy it now, buy it for a friend.

Steam and Iron is my current game of the year (I know it is early...). Not totally tactical...nor operational...but beautifully elegant in execution.

"Steam and Iron" without doubt, followed by NWS' own "Warship Combat: Navies at War".

Was doing some spring cleaning yesterday and came across my old copy of Action Stations - manual and 5-1/4 inch disks and all.

The latest version of Action Stations (v.3.4) is now freeware. I was impressed by how the game still holds up magnificently.

I forgot to mention SSI's Warship and Battecruiser, from the 80's.
Those Long Lances were deadly, and boy did those British BC's blow up.
