Indeed, loved the hunt for grievous swarm..........

Can you give blonde admiral girl a warship to hang her flag on so she can fight if needed?

Igard -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/22/2012 1:36:40 AM)

Great episode! Thanks for showing the extra shipset, Das.

And wow! Grievous Storm, very good stuff.

Looking forward to more. [:)]

Episode 8

Fishers of Men -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/23/2012 8:29:08 PM)

Nice subplot about Grievous Swarm, Das123. A lot of unexpected events occurred with that pirate ship. Looking forward to what happens with that destroyer.

Igard -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/23/2012 9:39:04 PM)

I think you're gonna find the Dominion easier to take on now. Not just because of your improved tech, but because the rest of the galaxy seems to be ganging up on them. This happens most games, but they usually have allies, like the Cardassians and the Breen.

The Gorn were seen in the TOS episode, "Arena". Kirk fought the Gorn on Cestus III and subsequently lost his shirt. They're a pretty aggressive race, but they're relations with the Federation has improved much. In the expanded universe (soft-canon) they actually share Cestus III with the Federation.

idjester -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/24/2012 4:35:12 PM)

What's up with the Federation refusing to help an ally in need in episode 2/3, not only once but twice.... Seriously.... Really..... And this after giving the whole role playing "to keep with the spirit of the mod" speach as well. That went out the window as soon as the Federation realized that they wern't the most powerful force in the universe...

Screams from the doomed planet ---"Picard, please come and help us, we are in dire need. We are under attack from a force much greater then ours and they are entering our sector.... For the love of god, Picard, do something..... and quick".

Reply from Picard ---"Off comms. Terminate all communication with any distress call." Shakes his head... "Mr. Data, plot a course to Cardasia 1, we must go home and refuel and rearm before we dare to enter into a war that could stratch my precious enterprise. We are certainly not going to risk anything to help any others... Maybe once the federation has time to grow and we outman they enemy 10 to 1 then will we risk entering into this war and besides maybe by that time we will have the knowledge to replacate the DNA of the now extinct species that we will leave behind to fend for themselves..."

Way to play the mod with the spirit in which it was attended.....

DasTactic -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/24/2012 5:24:36 PM)

Episode 3. 19:20
The Federation receive an offer from a recently contacted race called the Lurians. Another group called the Dominion have declared war and they are willing to trade bases if we join the war on their side. We have no formal relations with either but the Lurians are on friendlier terms with us. They didn't ask for help, they made a trade offer.

As happened between Cardassia and Bajor, the reply would have been to not get involved militarily in a conflict that doesn't directly involve the Federation where there are no existing treaties but to offer mediation. Federation is more about using the carrot than the stick. Federation also not in a strong enough position to intercede.

Episode 5. 19:00
Another trade offer presented this time from the Kressari against the Dominion. Once again no existing treaties so correct response is not to get involved - especially when not in a position to assist.

Episode 6. 18:30
The Lurians declare war on our allies the Tamarians. The Tamarians ask us officially to become involved. We are on good terms with both races but diplomatically our duty is to honour our treaty though reluctantly. War is declared yet the Federation take a defensive stance and only protect Federation territory rather than actively force the war into the Lurian planets.

----------------------------------------

I'm comfortable with the roll-play of each of these incidents. If the Dominion had declared war on our allies, the Tamarians, then no matter the state of our military I would have honoured that request too.

By the time Deep Space Nine series came to a conclusion the Federation was very pragmatic about what it could and could not do. Also in the Next generation itself how many times did the "prime directive" stop the federation from saving a society, helping to avert disaster? Many times..........

Das123 has made an excellent overview/introduction to Igard's Picard Mod,it'll probably inspire many Distant Worlds owners to give the mod a try.

Personally I am looking forward to episode Nine myself.

Thanks Das123 for making a really enjoyable video lets play for the picard mod.[;)]

idjester -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/24/2012 8:32:33 PM)

Well it looks like I have come to the party late...... I have only just watched the first 3 epsidoes so I can not comment any anything further into the series at this point. Once I have a chance to watch those I will of course comment on those as well.

Of course you can play your AAR anyway you want DAS123 but you basically built up the first several episodes as a "here is the Federation at work" lets see how this plays out now...... But when the time came for the Federation to step up to the plate, they didn't and they left their allies all alone... There is no way that this would ever happen in Star Trek -Picard era. The Federation wouldn't allow it and Picard wouldn't allow it.

Proof of existance from episode 3:

1:00-1:31 The Federation (you) declares that the Dominion will be your enemy. Infact you mention battle--something against them, infuring that the Federation will go to war and fight against the Dominion at some time in the future. The Federation then goes on to declare that the K'thar will be our allies. "We will be fighting the Dominion and keeping the K'thar as allies." Also at this time the Federation mentions the war between the Dominion and the K'thar and which side they will take.

2:15-2:20 The Federation then proceeds to brides the K'thar to become closer allies by sending them money. This is done in hopes of building a better relationship with them.

2:38-2:49 The Federation declares that they will go to war with the Dominion if the Dominion tries to take over an independant planet of Kurill 4 before the Federation has a chance to do the exact same thing.

The Federations defense is three fold: (according to your comment)

1) K'thar is a new found race and we don't have any relations.
According to the filed captains report (video ARR) the K'thar is an ally. The Fereration sent money to them, give them trade and mining rights, and also tryed to get a free trade agreement.

2) They didn't ask for help them made a trade offer.
The K'thar are in need and call on the Federation and are willing to give them their entire galaxy map and also every credit (money) that they own to call on the Federation to help join their side in this war that has been going on for along time. The Federation knows of this war and they know who they are going to support during it but the Federation chooses to ignore the K'thar plea for help. Even knowing that the K'thar stand no chance against the Dominion, the Federation turn a blind eye.

3) The Federation is not in a strong enough position to intercede.
According to their own admissions the Federation was strong enough to go to war with the Dominion for their "own", personal gain but are not "willing" to invest in a war to help protect an ally.

So for whatever reason the Federation turned a blind eye to the K'thar, even though they had relationships, called them an "ally", and was strong enought to go to war for their own personal gain but not to aid an ally.

It looks like the Picard era AAR forgot one important thing..... "the needs of the many, outweight the needs of the few...... or the one"

Tophat1815 -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/24/2012 8:56:12 PM)

Well you are really going to be upset when you get down toward episode 8 then:

The Federation plan to land troops and take over a Gorn colony!

The federation plan on moving passed their Tamarian allies and landing troops on Bajor as well! This is because this bajor, there are two systems with the same name in this game,is outside of the Federation colony zone.

Also the first firm alliance the Federation had was with the Tamarians and the Feds have lived up to their alliance with them.

When does "inferring" something make it legally binding? We have a tom o'lawyers in the Federation. In fact rumor has it that in the last Chief of staff presentation to the federation senate if the Borg attack again starfleet will simply unleash the legal department and have them try to assimilate that!

You really should watch the other episodes and get in on the saga of the Grievous Swarm.

idjester -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/24/2012 11:16:18 PM)

Your right Tophat, when Picard was talking to all of his allies throughout his career he was just "inferring" to them that maybe he would help.... No commitment, he would get around to it if he wanted too later.... That's one thing I always remember about Picard, he was so wishy-washy and never able to make any commitments to help someone in need.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/24/2012 11:33:07 PM)

Das123 isn't Picard............he is the Federation bureaucracy behind the "government". The men and women that make up the entity are good and honorable people the bureaucracy is a nonentity.

Igard -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/24/2012 11:36:32 PM)

Remember though, in Star Trek all Admirals are corrupt, Presidents are weak and Commodore's, well they're just plain crazy!

The Federation preaches justice and principles to the rest of the galaxy, but when push comes to shove, they'll do what it takes to preserve their own security. Their way of life over all others.

Picard is only one man. He didn't always agree with his superiors, because they often did what they thought had to be done and Picard had to go along with it on occasions.

I'd say Das has RP'd really well. Personally, I wouldn't invade Bajor, but I would've invaded Kurill and I might invade Gornar. It's his game though and he has to do what it takes to preserve Federation security, just like the corrupt admirals and weak presidents (OK maybe not the crazy commodore's [:D]). No difference.

But you know, we all have our own interpretations of how to RP the Federation or the Klingons. We might disagree, but that's fine. That's just the same as Picard and Admiral Nechayev disagreeing about unleashign the Borg virus with Hugh, or displacing the Federation colonists along the Cardassian border.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/25/2012 12:09:56 AM)

Igard is correct, given any situation different people will handle things in a different manner. The beauty of this mod is "you can do it your way",just download the mod and play it to suit your own tastes.

But neither you nor i have taken the time and done the work to bring a video episode AAR out, well Das123 has so respecting his effort is just good manners.

DasTactic -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/25/2012 12:37:03 AM)

Thanks for the comments and discussion. I can see the various points raised and I guess I should have qualified that with 'within the scope of the game' which sounds like a cop-out but at the end of the day we need to manage the score-line. That is, we need to have more planets, more population, and a better economy than the others; and then we need our race-specific objectives met: more research, exploration, mutual defence treaties, trade bonuses etc.

Also, my comments are purely a commentary on the game rather than a role-play of the game. When discussing potential allies at the start of the game it was with reference to getting our Mutual Defence Treaty requirement met so I chose to try and develop relationships with that end in mind.

From what I've seen of StarTrek, Picard is moralistic and lives by a code - but the Federation itself has its share of corruption and back-room deals. In the Insurrection movie as an example the Federation sides with the Son'a to relocate the Baku purely for profit. Picard is willing to resign his commission to do what is right - but the Federation chose the other path until their hands were forced by Picard.

As far as siding with the Lurians who's to say that the Dominion hadn't released information that their close border was constantly being crossed and that they were forced to declare war. The Federation, without any formal treaties, would try to mediate but it doesn't take much of an excuse to force an issue one way or another. It's only when there is a Mutual Defence Treaty that the decision would be clear-cut.

And with the landing of troops, an excuse could be that the Gorn and Bajoran worlds were heavily implicated in the piracy problem and that a police force is sent to help new responsible governments stabilise the sectors. There can always be a plausible excuse for actions. :)

Episode 9? [:D]

DasTactic -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/25/2012 7:22:00 AM)

Here's Episode 9. :)

Tophat1815 -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/25/2012 8:35:26 AM)

Das123......the captured cruiser you have zapping pirates down by the Gorn planet your police have brought to order is a Breen ship. Breen ice planetdwellers from the deep space nine series.

Loved episode 9 by the way and looking forward to seeing Bajor in the federation.

Question for you Das123 what do you think o the amount of $ available in your empire so far? Do you think cash flows in too easily? Still too early to tell?

Any comments or observations on the ai?

The $$$ do seem a shade too easy but I think that is fine. The limiting factor is really the materials for building and the construction yards. Perhaps the UI needs to show these factors some-how (material shortfalls and construction queues as an example always visible on the screen).

The AI is not great but is serviceable. Given an advantage they can make the game very interesting. Biggest problem presently I think is the ship design. If this is being worked on now then hopefully the AI will be able to make things even more interesting. :)

Tophat1815 -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/29/2012 10:36:21 PM)

when is episode 10 coming out?[;)]

ask and received! cool........

Igard -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/30/2012 1:01:51 AM)

President Amitra was mentioned only in the Star Trek novels. She was responsible for ending the Cardassian wars and establishing the demilitarized zone. The redrawing of borders meant that Federation colonists were driven from their homes and the Maquis terrorist group was born.

I figured this was a pretty dreadful legacy for this President, so I gave her lots of negative traits. She is a Pandrilite and I was able to find out that they have blue skin, so all I had to do was find an image of an alien looking woman and change her skin colour. I used an image of a character from the series Space 1999.

I have found the Federation very easy to play finacially. Only the Ferengi make more money than them.

Looks like the Dominion is in trouble now. I think taking Kurill from them sealed their fate, as they've been unable to expand. Their close proximity to the Lurians and the Kressari have given them problems also. I am surprised they haven't conquered the Lurian homeworld. They must've thrown away alot of their troops trying to take it.

Anyway, very enjoyable. I'm surprised how fast time flies when I'm watcing you! I look forward to ep 11. [:)]

DasTactic -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (4/30/2012 10:23:25 PM)

Interesting to hear the background behind choices. :) It's great the amount of detail you have put into this mod. :)

Anyhow, here is Episode 11.

Episode 12

This is the last video in this Let's Play. Very enjoyable mod. :) Highly recommend it.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (5/1/2012 6:01:30 PM)

Excellent let's play video!! Thank you.

Igard -> RE: Let's Play Star Trek Picard Era mod (5/2/2012 1:31:12 AM)

Really enjoyed watching Das. You turned an average game into something interesting.

I'm shocked that there was another Cardassia as well! In a map of that size, it should always use different system names taken from the systems list.

You mentioned an update at the end. I haven't updated yet, but I might do so soon. It's just victory conditions tweaks and that Bootis system name fix. [:)]

Oh yes, and you can always try the Total Conversion addon. Gives you nice sound effects, more music and graphics. And the Crystalline entity!
