Losing Yamato to a sub hit and magazine explosion is pretty bad but I have to say that Greyjoy sinking Rader's Yamato with PT boats was epic.

Haven't played as Japan, but in my current game Yamato was sunk by a pair of RAN CA plus screen (all RAN, RNZN or Dutch) in a night combat off the Shortlands. She took both the CAs with her, so from a strategic standpoint it was a win for Japan, but from a VP standpoint a serious win for the Allies. Plus, it has to be embarrassing to loose to a task force you outmass by over 2:1 all by yourself, and which has no gun of more than half your bore size. The IJN also lost a CL and a DD in that fight.

Bill, IF an Iowa could have been stripped of the big rifles and extra AA added, what kind of rating would she have, game-wise?

No one would build something that big with nothing heavier than a 5"/38, and the mounts would wind up restricting each other's fire arcs unless you made up something like a sextuple mount which wouldn't be very efficient...

Oh, fine, figure eight additional twin 5" turrets.

Probably something like that. Though it would take a lot less steel to build a few CLAAs with the same equivalent firepower.

Actually, surface combat is so juiced up in this game that I think it is worth it for the Japanese player to build them. In real life, no.

crsutton,

Are you satisfied with Yamato's ASW rating in the game?

Oops, never answered OP:

Haven't lost Yamato yet, except in a scenario.
