gunny -> looking for a new game for Dad (5/4/2012 4:08:19 PM)

OK, pop just got a new i5, and I'm getting him onto Win 7. Problem is he has been playing his favourite game for over a decade, Rise of Nations by microsoft. And needs to try something else. RoN was never optimized for new 16X9 monitors, and although its OK in xp emulation, I'd like to see if he can find a new favourite game. He has some parameters

-strategy game, war based, any epoc, simple economy building or none
-something new, not another 10 year old game
-land or naval
-No 3d scrolling, he doesn't do well with the 3D environment games
-isometric is good, isometric scrolling zooming is fine
-prefers Real Time, will consider turn based.
-must be easy on the eyes

..... thanks for your help

"Time of Fury" from Wastelands/Slitherine/Matrix. Good fun game, easily modded, good community.

Armored Brigade.

It's a tough one as your asking for a style that is old i.e ISO.

I know it's old but it isn't ten years old I'd say Spartan. It sounds like the sort of thing he will like and ticks the boxes.

A new one is the Hannibal game. That is a good choice if he likes something cerebral.

Or for another new game Fields of Glory (loads of expansions for him aswell if he fancies a different era).

Then we have one of the Close Combat remakes.

If he loves naval games there is Steam and Iron by NWS.

Company of Heroes or Empire: Total War.

Real-time, war-based - easy to play, harder to be good at...

Cmd-Ops: BfTB.
It isn't Isometric, but is reasonably easy on the eyes. AI layer and real-time reduces command span to manageable levels, allowing the focus to be on planning.

Hegemony gold is a great choice as long as he is happy with the game being single player. Try the demo over at Longbow Games.

Empire: Total War? Did that game ever reach a decent level of playability? Just asking. Quit playing a long time ago.

Time of Fury or Making History are my choices.

Yes, FAR AWAY.

Panzer Corps
Time of Fury
Battle Academy

All three are so much fun.

I loved Rome Total War but I played Empire Total War for maybe 30 minutes and haven't touched it in years. Don't like it.

Warspite1

It would be great if they could update Rome's naval battles. Although I do not dislike Empire that much I agree Rome is the much better game.

Dude, he's been playing Rise of Nations for the last 10 years.

That doesn't mean he has to trade an old game for a horrible one.

Actually, I found Rome to be even more awful than ETW
(which is no mean feat). I'm thinking we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one. [8D]

If you add the "Darth Mod Ultimate Commander" to Empire the land battles are fantasic to watch, and the music includes Drum and Fife, very atmopheric as your line infantry marches across the field under all the extra smoke and effects.
I always remember during the first battle as Great Britain against the Indians using this mod and the theme from "last of the Mohicans" started playing. One of those gaming moments i will not forget for sure. Granted the game is not without its faults but definatley give the mod a go if you own the game.
