There are several mentions of the 35th division hq in the operation of taking north borneo. However in witp ae i cant find it. The only 35th infantry unit is deep in chinese territory but its not hq. Am i missing somethink?

It's not the 35th Division, but the 35th Infantry GROUP, which was detached from 56th Division. 35th Division spent the whole war in China.

The article lists the 35th Infantry BRIGADE headquarters.

Which is a whole third unit. It was one of the two brigade HQs under 18th Division. The 18th was a Type A (or "square) division, with two infantry brigade HQs controlling four regiments. The 56th Division was a Type B ("triangular") division, with an infantry group HQ controlling thre regiments.

The IJA used this brigade and group setup at the beginning of the war to be able to detach subunits of their divisions for attacks where they were unwilling and/or unable to use a whole division. Later, the system was abandoned, the square divisions were triangularized and the spare brigade and group HQs used to form independent brigades.

Thank you terminus

18th Divisiion was ‘square’, with 23rd and 35th Brigades. In the process of triangularizing the 18th, the 23rd Brigade HQ became 18th Div Infantry Group HQ and the 35th Brigade HQ was split out, along with 124th Inf Rgt, under command of MGen Yamaguchi Kiyotake and designated the ‘Kawaguchi Detachment’ (remember Kawaguchi?).

This unit has a long participatory history in the early stages of the war, both in Borneo and in the Solomons. Because of organizational provenance (and command evolution), it is identified by many names: 35th Brigade (although it wasn’t a brigade); 124th Inf Rgt (although it had attachments over the Regimental level); Kawaguchi Detachment (probably the most descriptive, until Kawaguchi gets whacked); Oka detachment (124th Inf Rgt, as long as Kawaguchi wasn’t around); and various other names of Bn commanders after the unit organization dissolved under combat stress on Guadalcanal.

As Terminus so aptly describes, welcome to the wonderful world of Japanese unit designations.[8D]
