Right, with the domestic football season all but over, lets turn our attention to the Euros.

Who is going to win?

... and in the end Germany always wins?

Edit: Our season recently begun.

Warspite1

That must be a bummer for the big clubs with international players then?

It used to be but not nowdays. UEFA (and FIFA) forbids national football during their tournaments. So we have a two month break in ther season for the Euros.

Must play havoc with the schedules?

Indeed.

What is more annoying is that so many of the best players gets sold in mid season (summer). My team has a solid defence this year. But we are looking for a new starting central defender since they expect one or two of them to get sold. It is not unusual that around 4 of the starting players gets lost during the summer. At times even more.

Jeesus, that seems confusing. Am I understanding that right, play just ceases in some coutries because of a higher level of play-offs?

warspite1 -> RE: European Championships (5/14/2012 10:41:49 PM)

So what do you reckon England vs Sweden?

A draw seems like a prudent guess. But it is to early for a serious guess since we do not know what players will be available.

Yes. Although in this case it is the European Championship. But same thing actually happens on a smaller scale for Champions Legue games. Makes it a real pain to reschedule cancelled games.

Warspite1

Only the Barbarian countries, you know Russia, the Scandies - the rest of us run our seasons at a normal time [;)]

Seriously though, when the Africans hold their cup of nations, our players that are picked go missing from the league for about a month - it can be a serious loss for some clubs.

nate25 -> RE: European Championships (5/14/2012 10:50:24 PM)

So the Euros are the top of the pile?

warspite1 -> RE: European Championships (5/14/2012 10:53:12 PM)

Warspite1

No. The World Cup is the daddy. Then, each continent has its own tounament - Copa America, African Cup of Nations, European Championshps etc. Then below that its club football - inter European and domestic.

The Copa America is for the South American countries although they invite 2 countries from North America and/or the Caribbean to play too.

Sort of. But then there is the FIFA World Cup. The greatest sports event in the world.

Orm - we'll have to work on nate some more. We can teach him though - he's not a completely lost cause.

"The World Cup is the world's most widely viewed sporting event; an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany"

Indeed. And Super Bowl is all about quantity.

The quantity of commercial breaks one can include in a sporting event. And the quantity of beer that can be sold.

[:D]

wodin -> RE: European Championships (5/15/2012 1:10:37 AM)

I just want Chelsea to loose the Champions League. What being a Spurs supporter and all that. Come on Bayern.

As for American football I don't mind it, reminds me of being young when it hit our screens in the early eighties on Channel 4. Though what says alot about our American Cousins is the way they call the winners World Champions and is it baseball World Series? Yet only American teams are involved! They've got to feel that they've beat the whole world even in their national sports where they only take part.

Only winding you all up here!

doomtrader -> RE: European Championships (5/15/2012 7:16:28 AM)

Poland has spent over 1,3 billion of US dollars to build four stadiums.
I know many much better ways to spent those money.

Hopefully you get at least some of the money back during the tournament. I considered travelling to Poland during the tournament but then Sweden got to play in Kiev. So now I am going to enjoy it at home instead.
