I see. So I was a little off point, by one sport, but not by the other, which you didn't comment on. The main point however was that there are sports out there that are very much not a world-thing, but who claim to be world champions. Oh, and baseball is pretty popular in Japan.

My point was that baseball *is* a global sport. Hence my mention of all of the independent countries in that laundry list in my first post. In the United States and Canada, the premier association is "MLB" (Major League Baseball). In Japan, it's NPB (Nippon Yakyu Kiko) with slightly different rules and gameplay. In Venezuela it's LVBP (Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional). I don't know the rules differences with them, if any.

Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela compete annually in the "Carribean Series". This series is broadcast on ESPN networks and MLB networks in the United States and elsewhere. Puerto Rico is the most recent title holder (their 5th time).

The difference isn't popularity of sport, it's adherence to a common league and rule book. I'm sure there are other soccer leagues out there like FIFA, just not as popular / imbedded as they are. So, to be accurate, you are really espousing the FIFA 'brand' of soccer and it's international / global flavor, rules and so forth. OK. That's great. Other sports are popular globally just with less of a stranglehold on international competition.

ernieschwitz -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/9/2018 8:38:22 AM)

Sorry. I can't see your point.

On one hand it is ok to have sports that say they have a World Championship that exclude other countries, cause they are bad, on the other hand it is not ok for the Soccer world cup to have the semifinals to have only countries from Europe..

I think you proved my point actually.

rico21 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/9/2018 9:58:59 AM)

I invested a lot in this thread because I thought we will talk about football, the real, mine.[:)]
I did not think we'll talk about sports that half of the world does not want to play.[:D]

bazjak -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/9/2018 10:07:55 AM)

Baseball
When i was a kid we called it "rounders"
And it was played in the UK for a very long time and has never took off in any way at all

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/10/2018 5:26:57 PM)

Well after that detour its good to get back to the beautiful game. So tonight its the first semi-final:

France vs Belgium

As said previously, I think Belgium will kick-on from beating Brazil and will make the final. Man for man I'm not really sure which team is better but will go with Belgium....

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/10/2018 6:49:55 PM)

0-0 at half time. Another great game though.

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/10/2018 8:01:04 PM)

.....Well some call the Belgian 'Golden Generation' England's Golden Generation MkII.... and now you know why.

I really thought that coming back from 2-0 vs Japan and then beating Brazil would allow them to blossom but when push comes to shove they blow it again. Dembele was poor, Lukaku does what Lukaku does against the big teams and disappears, De Bruyne was hit and miss and Chadli was...er the Nacer Chadli we knew at Tottenham. Hazard was effective but not in the right areas (should have had a free kick though on the edge of the area). France were very strong though and defended well - with great pace to inflict damage on the counter. As it was they won from a set-piece.

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/10/2018 8:04:21 PM)

...and then there were three. Belgium are one of those that will play the game no one wants to play..

shunwick -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/10/2018 8:07:49 PM)

The first Semi-Final sees:

France 1 Belgium 0. So a functional and disciplined France are the first team to get though to the final. The nerves got to Belgium particularly De Bruyne and with Courtois beaten at his near post from a fairly bog-standard header from Umtiti. Belgium chances few and far between and French chances the same. Not a classic but very watchable nevertheless. France will fancy themselves against either Croatia or England.

The second Semi-Final is tomorrow night.

Best wishes,
Steve

Chickenboy -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/10/2018 8:13:49 PM)

I'd like to amend my previous pick if I may?

I don't know my European geography very well, but in the match between France and "TBD" (wherever that is?), I'll pick the latter. TBD is due for a victory, having been eliminated every step of the way along the playoff chart line.

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/10/2018 8:15:40 PM)

Will the final be a re-run of the infamous semi-final of 1998 when Slaven Bilic's pathetic cheating robbed Laurent Blanc of a final place, or will it be a re-run of Waterloo, Agincourt, Crecy, Poitiers, Trafalgar, Aboukir Bay et al?

warspite1

Well you are a Yank so we'll let you off [;)]

I'd go with TBD. Mbappe is fast down the wing and the Devastator is a little obsolete now but I'd still back the TBD in a straight fight.

My Gallic ancestors must be sad.[:(]
They no longer play with the "Furia Francese".[sm=00000023.gif]
They play like the Romans.[8D]
Good luck to Carthage.[:D]

I would prefer England... except for the 2 last centuries, it's our best ennemy...

And it could be Fleurus, Castillon, Orléans, Hastings... [;)]

warspite1

[:)] - indeed it could.

However, whilst I fully understand why you would prefer England in the final, sadly I don't think you will get your wish. England are England and the omens are not good. Apart from the fact that Croatia have better players*, there is the small matter of England's record in World Cup/European Championship semi-finals - we won our first (all the way back in 1966) but then lost the next three. We also haven't won a World Cup match wearing an all white strip since 1970! Oh and Jamie Redknapp thinks England will win - and he's always wrong....

Ho hum......

* Actually I don't think Croatia - Modric and Rakitic aside - have necessarily better players, but that doesn't seem to matter with England...

England will win the semi-finals because they do not trust Croatia to beat France in the final.[:D]

I suspect France is going to annihilate the poor devils that will make it to the final this evening [sm=00000622.gif]

Not a Brazil 1 - 7 Germany Redux but you get the picture...[sm=00000622.gif]

According to Eric Cantona England will win the World Cup [:D]

Possible, but Thierry Henry had said the same thing to the Belgians.
I admit that to see Putin handing the world cup to the English would be, ...
So British.[:D]

In Spain, we hope that Croatia will win to England and then to France... The two old enemies [;)]

Well, we´re already happy. Portugal didn´t go further than Spain this time [:D]

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/11/2018 5:30:04 PM)

So, just over 30 mins to go. The nerves are already jangling. Watching England is excruciating at the best of times (except vs Holland in 1996 and Germany in 2001) - two games in almost 50 years is a pretty poor return....

But hope springs eternal Baldrick and so let's just hope England don't stink the place out as we have so often in the past.....but I have my gas mask at the ready just in case....

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/11/2018 5:34:03 PM)

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/11/2018 8:43:15 PM)

Yep. Same story. 1-0 up at half time and then simply couldn't be arsed to come out in the second half. Simply couldn't be bothered*. Invited pressure that was always going to lead to a goal. Created nothing. Absolutely nothing. And when you need a goal to save the semi-final it really helps to actually put the ball in the opposition box. Totally got what we deserved.

Well done Croatia. Would like to see France win it for Hugo.

*Of course that is unfair - they very much could be bothered - but I can only put it down to a mental thing. Its always the same. Having only got one goal at half time one just knew what was going to happen next. Frustration city.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (7/11/2018 8:46:15 PM)

Croatia population: 4,1 million.

And yet they produced what matters: talent.

Delighted [:D]
