Now a single leg at a neutral ground, rather than a two-leg home and away affair....

From the Estadio Nacional Lima, Peru, the final of the Copa Libertadores 2019 sees River Plate v Flamengo.

Live BBC 2 7-45pm UK today.

The Argentinian Champions, River Plate, are probably the most impressive team over the last 5 years, while the Brazilian Champions, Flamengo, are probably the hottest team in the last six months.

Should be fun.

Best wishes,
Steve

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (11/23/2019 7:33:07 PM)

West Ham United 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur

A winning start which was desperately needed, but people going overboard on the performance. Some good things - more direct for example, and actually playing some balls in behind the defence - but otherwise largely the same (too many silly individual errors) - and the inability to keep a clean sheet remains a major concern....

Orm -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (11/30/2019 6:19:40 PM)

The Euros could be interesting. And group F seems tough.

Add a picture with the groups. Edit: Not that any group is all that easy.

are we heading for that stage of the season where Brendan Rogers suddenly decides he is a genius?

warspite1

I must admit he's doing a better job than I thought he would at Leicester. You'd have to think that he's learnt something and will seek to rehabilitate his reputation by remaining at Leicester and getting them into the Champions League - who knows, maybe even winning the cup. If he moves to Arsenal (or anywhere else) this season then he is what many suspect... a total fool and legend in his own lunchtime.

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (12/6/2019 5:12:11 PM)

When are UEFA going to grow a set?

wodin -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (12/17/2019 11:27:37 AM)

Big improvement with Spurs! Last weekend results wired well for us.

Win against bogey team Chelsea next we take 4th off them by goal difference! We never win against them though.

Made up for Liverpool.

Crossroads -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (12/17/2019 12:46:18 PM)

Often times a certain game result is explained in "it was men against boys". Tonight should be fun with Villa vs Liverpool U-23s (weakened, even, with a couple of key players having traveled to Qatar) in League Cup.

All I am asking for is a similar fun treatment as the previous round vs Gunners was. Results wise, one goal against Villa would do, perhaps?

This is a genuine post by the way. It is rare to see kids given a chance nowadays, given how ultracommercial everything has become. Tonight indeed should be quite a treat. I have no idea how seriously Villa is taking the game, though. Hopefully not too seriously, to give the kids a fighting chance [:)]

warspite1

Well Crossroads I think you got your answer [;)]. To be fair I think with a place in the semi-finals at stake, Aston Villa would have been silly to not take this opportunity seriously - but as we know, infuriatingly too often, 'smaller' teams play weakened sides in the cups for no good reason i.e. even when they are pretty much safe from relegation issues.

And the winner of the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup is the Liverpool FC.

I was surprised about the woldwide reception of this Cup apart from Europe. Well done and go on Reds, there's still some silverware left this season...

RIP indeed. I met him at a book signing a few years ago. A thoroughly nice chap. Another of our World Cup winners to pass away [:(]

Lost to Chelsea would you believe it!! Er...yes, bogey team

warspite1 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (12/23/2019 3:35:28 PM)

Yesterday was shocking...absolutely appalling. We were the same Tottenham that Poch managed at the start of the year - except with more long balls. When a cult figure like Moussa Sissoko is your best player by some considerable margin, then you know you are in trouble.

The goalkeeping for the second goal was..... entertaining...

wodin -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (12/24/2019 3:24:07 AM)

I've given up football..for this year anyway. Need to get acclimatised to a mid table Spurs again, which will mean at least a year if not two break.

shunwick -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (12/26/2019 8:47:05 AM)

Well, it's the big one. Forget El Classico, for get the Manchester Derby, forget the London Derby.....

Yep.... the glue sniffing, wine soaked degenerates of Chelmsford take on the mighty Iron.

Boxing Day: Chelmsford City v Braintree Town
New Year's Day: Braintree Town v Chelmsford City

Braintree are currently in 11th place in the National League South and Chelmsford are 12th, two points behind.

Six points and bragging rights are up for grabs over the next few days.

These are the days we live for.

Best wishes,
Steve

I always hate this derby day and this year there are two within a short space of time - Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The police will have a hard time and, as usual, all police leave has been cancelled. Chelmsford and Braintree - this is more than just football, its war. One can't escape the religious, racial and nationalistic tensions that these encounters engender. It's a real north vs south clash, with the "Tough northern B*****s" from Braintree against the "southern softies" of Chelmsford. Tell me when its over - I'm staying in doors.....

3rd Round of the FA Cup. Tottenham play Middlesbrough of the Championship who have struggled this year and are in the bottom half of the table... I mean seriously, what could possibly go wrong?

loki100 -> RE: All things Football (soccer) related (1/3/2020 7:19:38 AM)

yep, reckon they will be perfectly ok, they ought to be disappointed if they only win by a couple of goals after Spurs' non-display at Southampton [8D]

I'm worried for Italy. The other three challengers in Group A don't seem worryingly strong - and Italy ALWAYS struggles against teams "not worryingly strong [:(] Historically, we bring out our A Game only against Germany, Brazil, England and the like - while regularly faceplanting when playing Camerun, Nigeria, Togo... It is tremendously frustrating. [:@]

...and now it looks like Sir Harry will be out for some time. Ho hum.... there's always next year. I always thought the Champions League and Europa League were over rated. With us out of those next year we can 'go large' on the Carabao.
